commentary: australia v scotland
Matthew Hayden lbw b Majid Haq 60.
By Dave Tickner
Australia (334 for six) beat Scotland (131 all out) by 203 runs
Easy win for Australia who were kept honest by a game Scotland side, but there was never any prospect of an upset here. Ponting's sublime century and Hogg's astonishing late onslaught will take the batting plaudits, while all the bowlers played their part.

Bracken is back into the attack for Australia.

Scotland 118/7 (RR: 3.28): Smith 43* (63), Rogers 2* (7)
Scotland need 217 runs to win from 14 overs at 15.50 runs per over.
Drinks. Australia have got the game sewn up here, but Smith has played a fine hand for Scotland, after a very decent showing with the keeper's gloves on earlier in the day.
Over 35: Tait is still steaming in at over 90mph, but Smith backs away and carves the ball to third-man for four runs. Another ball comes off Smith's pads for a leg-bye, and Tait then fires on e down the legside that gives Gilchrist no chance but is well cut off by Bracken. Three wides is the result. CM Wright lbw b Tait 4 (21)
Smith gets a quick single to cover that's greeted with huge cheers as it brings up the 100 for Scotland. The next ball is quick, full, a fraction legside and it rattles to the boundary off Wright's oads for four leg-byes. The next one is straighter, again hits the pads, and this time the finger goes up and Wright is gone. He may have got outside the line, but he's been given.
Tait is back into the attack as Ponting looks to wrap this up.

Scotland need 237 runs to win from 20 overs at 11.85 runs per over.

Scotland need 244 runs to win from 21 overs at 11.62 runs per over.
Over 28: Wright works his first ball to leg for a single, and Smith blocks the final ball. Good first over from Hodge, who bowls very slow offspinners that force the batsman to put the pace on the ball.

Scotland need 245 runs to win from 22 overs at 11.14 runs per over.

DR Brown c Watson b Hodge 19 (37)
After a couple of singles from the first few balls, Brown tries to clear the fence at long-on, but can only find the safe hands of Watson. Success for Hodge in his first over, and that's his first one-day international wicket.
Hodge is into the attack with his part-time offspin.
Over 27: Brown gets a single down the ground, but Smith can't get anything from the next three balls. A thin edge from ball five earns Smith a streaky four runs, and the last ball is hit straight at point. No luck for Hogg there.
Scotland 87/5 (RR: 3.22): Brown 18* (34), Smith 27* (39)
Scotland need 248 runs to win from 23 overs at 10.78 runs per over.
Over 26: Smith drives down the ground for a single, and Brown gets another with a guide to third-man. Another bunt down the ground gets Smith a single, and he's certainly impressed here. Watson bangs in that bouncer again, but Brown is easily underneath it. Brown gets a single down the ground from the final ball of the over.
Scotland 82/5 (RR: 3.15): Brown 17* (33), Smith 23* (35)
Scotland need 253 runs to win from 24 overs at 10.54 runs per over.
Over 25: Brown tickles the ball down the legside for a single, and Hogg then drops a wrong 'un short of a length and Smith can get that through the legside for another run.
Scotland 78/5 (RR: 3.12): Brown 15* (29), Smith 21* (33)
Scotland need 257 runs to win from 25 overs at 10.28 runs per over.
Over 24: Watson beats Smith with a well-disguised leg-cutter. But Smith then takes the attack to Watson by charging down the track and cutting hard behind point for four runs. Smith looks to get a single into the covers next ball, but can't find the gap at square-cover. Watson attempts a bouncer, but it's down the legside and signalled wide. Smith solidly sees out the over from Watson, and these two are showing the top order the way.
Scotland 76/5 (RR: 3.17): Brown 14* (25), Smith 20* (31)
Scotland need 259 runs to win from 26 overs at 9.96 runs per over.
Over 23: Four singles come from the first four balls of Hogg's over before Smith is forced to block the fifth. Smith hammers the final ball of the over out to deep midwicket, but he gets just a single.
Scotland 71/5 (RR: 3.09): Brown 14* (25), Smith 16* (25)
Scotland need 264 runs to win from 27 overs at 9.78 runs per over.
Over 22: Smith hammers a drive into the covers where a diving Clarke makes a fine stop. Smith tries to guide the next one to third-man but finds only Ponting at backward-point. Smith does get the fourth ball of the over to third-man for a single, and the fifth is a bouncer from Watson that Brown ducks. Brown blocks the final ball, and it's another tidy over from Watson.
Scotland 66/5 (RR: 3.00): Brown 12* (23), Smith 13* (21)
Scotland need 269 runs to win from 28 overs at 9.61 runs per over.
Watson is back into the attack.
Over 21: Smith is bamboozled by the wrong 'un from Hogg, but does get the next ball down the ground for a single. A big-spinning ball from Hogg flicks off the Brown's pads and runs away for a couple of leg-byes.
Scotland 65/5 (RR: 3.10): Brown 12* (21), Smith 12* (17)
Scotland need 270 runs to win from 29 overs at 9.31 runs per over.
With the powerplays out of the way, Hogg is into the attack for Australia.
Over 20: McGrath offers Brown some width, and he absolutely hammers it through backward point for a cracking boundary. McGrath then oversteps, and that's another run to Scotland's total. Brown stoutly defends the rest of the over, and this partnership is at least giving Australia something to think about.
Scotland 62/5 (RR: 3.10): Brown 12* (20), Smith 11* (12)
Scotland need 273 runs to win from 30 overs at 9.10 runs per over.
Over 19: Smith pushes through square-cover for a couple of runs, and then plays an even better shot next ball to get the ball all the way to the fence for four. Tait bangs the next ball in short, and Smith gets underneath that one easily enough. Another full ball follows, and Smith drives again for another boundary. Ten from the over.
Scotland 57/5 (RR: 3.00): Brown 8* (13), Smith 11* (12)
Scotland need 278 runs to win from 31 overs at 8.97 runs per over.
Tait is back into the attack for another burst of pace.
Over 18: McGrath raps Smith on the pads and is none-too-impressed when the lbw apppeal is turned down by Bucknor. The next ball is a bouncer that Smith gets underneath quite easily. Smith guides to third-man for a single to get off the mark. Brown blocks the final three balls of the over, and offers a sense of permanence not present in his team-mates.
Scotland 47/5 (RR: 2.61): Brown 8* (13), Smith 1* (6)
Scotland need 288 runs to win from 32 overs at 9.00 runs per over.
Over 17: Brown drives Watson sweetly through the covers for four. A Watson slower ball is picked and defended by Brown, who is solidly in behind everything that Watson can throw at him at the moment.
Scotland 46/5 (RR: 2.71): Brown 8* (10), Smith 0* (3)
Scotland need 289 runs to win from 33 overs at 8.76 runs per over.
Over 16: Smith ducks under a bouncer and then digs out a yorker in a testing opening.
Scotland 42/5 (RR: 2.63): Brown 4* (4), Smith 0* (3)
Scotland need 293 runs to win from 34 overs at 8.62 runs per over.
Wicketkeeper Smith is the new batsman for Scotland. They need a captain's innings.

GM Hamilton c Gilchrist b McGrath 3 (18)
Scotland in deep trouble here, as Hamilton gets a thin edge through to Gilchrist to give McGrath a third wicket.
Umpire Bucknor indicates the final powerplay of the match.
Over 15: Watson continues to probe away on off stump, and Hamilton can't get anything until the fifth ball of the over when a flick to leg gets a single. Brown ducks a bouncer to end the over.
Scotland 42/4 (RR: 2.80): Hamilton 3* (15), Brown 4* (4)
Scotland need 293 runs to win from 35 overs at 8.37 runs per over.
Over 14: Brown pushes his first ball down the ground and calls Hamilton through for one. Hamilton wants nothing to do with that, and Brown has to turn and run back, almost running two. Brown gets off the mark in style though with a good-looking force through cover off the back foot for four runs.
Scotland 41/4 (RR: 2.93): Hamilton 2* (10), Brown 4* (3)
Scotland need 294 runs to win from 36 overs at 8.17 runs per over.
Brown is the new batsman for Scotland.
WICKET!
RR Watson c Bracken b McGrath 6 (20)
Watson is surprised by a bouncer from McGrath, and can only fend the ball into the legside where Bracken takes a simple catch at short fine-leg.
Over 13: R Watson digs out a bouncer from S Watson, and pulls the next ball through midwicket for a single. Hamilton blocks into the covers and sprints through for a single. R Watson pushes into the covers and gets another single before Hamilton ducks the final ball of the over.
Scotland 37/3 (RR: 2.85): Watson 6* (17), Hamilton 2* (10)
Scotland need 298 runs to win from 37 overs at 8.05 runs per over.
Over 12: Hamilton gets off the mark with a single on the legside, and Watson gets a thick inside edge into the legside for another. Hamilton is rapped on the pads, but gets a thin inside edge on the way through and the appeal is stifled. Hamilton blocks the fifth ball of the over, and is solidly in behind the final ball of McGrath's over.
Scotland 34/3 (RR: 2.83): Watson 4* (14), Hamilton 1* (7)
Scotland need 301 runs to win from 38 overs at 7.92 runs per over.
Over 11: Watson to Watson here. Could get confusing. S Watson beats R Watson with a good one outside the off stump and the has his Scottish namesake ducking with an accurate bouncer. Maiden over from S Watson, and it's a good one as well.
Scotland 32/3 (RR: 2.91): Watson 3* (12), Hamilton 0* (3)
Scotland need 303 runs to win from 39 overs at 7.77 runs per over.
Bracken is out of the attack to be replaced by Watson, and Australia do take the second powerplay.
Over 10: Hamilton lets his first three balls go through to the keeper.
Scotland 32/3 (RR: 3.20): Watson 3* (6), Hamilton 0* (3)
Scotland need 303 runs to win from 40 overs at 7.58 runs per over.
Hamilton is the new batsman for Scotland.
WICKET!
DF Watts b McGrath 9 (25)
Watts guides McGrath's first ball to third-man for a single, and Watson adds another after dropping the ball at his feet. But Watts tries to repeat the shot and succeeds only in chopping the ball onto his off stump. McGrath strikes in his first over.
McGrath is into the attack for the first time.
Over 9: Watts is beaten outside the off stump, but gets a single from the next ball with a dab to third-man. Watson lets the next two balls go through to Gilchrist before blocking the final ball of a typically tidy Bracken over.
Scotland 30/2 (RR: 3.33): Watts 8* (23), Watson 2* (5)
Scotland need 305 runs to win from 41 overs at 7.44 runs per over.
Over 8: Watson clips into the legside for a couple of runs to get off the mark.
Scotland 29/2 (RR: 3.63): Watts 7* (20), Watson 2* (2)
Scotland need 306 runs to win from 42 overs at 7.29 runs per over.
Ryan Watson is the new batsman.
WICKET!
NS Poonia b Tait 1 (4)
Tait greets Poonia with a bouncer that is easily ducked, and should probably have been signalled wide. The next ball flicks off the pad to fine-leg for a leg-bye. The next ball is wide down the legside, and Watts then guides behind square on the offside for a single. But Tait then fires in a ball of express pace that is through Poonia's defences in the blink of an eye and rearranging the furniture.
Over 7: Watts guides to third-man for a single, and Poonia gets off the mark first ball with a nudge to midwicket. Good accurate stuff from Bracken.
Scotland 24/1 (RR: 3.43): Watts 6* (19), Poonia 1* (1)
Scotland need 311 runs to win from 43 overs at 7.23 runs per over.
Over 6: Watts edges the last ball of the over to third-man for a single. Eventful stuff.
Scotland 22/1 (RR: 3.67): Watts 5* (14), Poonia 0* (0)
Scotland need 313 runs to win from 44 overs at 7.11 runs per over.
Poonia is the new batsman.

RM Haq run out (McGrath/Tait) 16 (22)
A promising innings ends in a comical run out. First Tait pitches one up outside the off stump, and Haq drves it gloriously through the covers. It races to the fence and is one of the best shots of the day. Tait follows predictably with a couple of short balls that trouble Haq rather more than the wide half-volley. Another short ball well above 90mph is nicely evaded by Haq. Haq then pushes styraight to Clarke at cover and sets off on a suicidal run. Clarke shies at the stumps with the batsman stranded but misses. McGrath fumbles backing up, and the batsmen get through for an overthrow before Haq is run out foolishly attempting a second overthrow as McGrath tidies up.
Over 5: Bracken beats Watts outside the off stump with one that shapes away from the right-hander. The next one slants across the batsman who is drawn into an airy drive and makes no contact. Watts gets two with a pleasant enough drive through the covers. Watts edges another attempted drive, but a diving Watson at second slip can't take the difficult one-handed chance. Watts gets one for that, and Haq adds another with a guide to third-man.
Scotland 15/0 (RR: 3.00): Watts 4* (13), Haq 10* (17)
Scotland need 320 runs to win from 45 overs at 7.11 runs per over.
Over 4: Haq sways away from a short delivery, and that's pretty well played by the opener. Not so good next ball though, as a flat-footed waft makes no contact with the ball oranything near it. Haq stands tall and hits through the covers for two runs before playing and missing again at the fifth ball of Tait's over. Tait ends the over with another short delivery that Haq again plays pretty well.
Scotland 11/0 (RR: 2.75): Watts 1* (8), Haq 9* (16)
Scotland need 324 runs to win from 46 overs at 7.04 runs per over.
Over 3: Haq works to leg for a single, and Watts gets off the mark with a quick single to backward-point. Haq pushes into the covers for a single, and Watts lets the last ball of the over go through to Gilchrist.
Scotland 9/0 (RR: 3.00): Watts 1* (8), Haq 7* (10)
Scotland need 326 runs to win from 47 overs at 6.94 runs per over.
Over 2: Tait's first ball is fairly wide, and Haq goes after it and gets enough bat on it to get the ball over point for four. The next delivery is even wider and duly signalled as such. Tait's on target next delivery, but Haq is in behind it solidly. Haq cuts at the next ball but misses and the ball goes through to Gilchrist at chest height. A much fuller delivery beats Haq all ends up, and Tait's followthrough takes hism within a couple of yards of the batsman for a friendly chat. Haq chases another fairly wide delivery but makes no contact this time. Haq gets a single from the final ball of the over.
Scotland 6/0 (RR: 3.00): Watts 0* (6), Haq 5* (6)
Scotland need 329 runs to win from 48 overs at 6.85 runs per over.
Shaun Tait shares the new ball, and this could be entertaining as he lines up the left-handed Haq.
Over 1: Bracken starts with a maiden over, getting a hint of swing into and away from the right-handed Watts.
Scotland 0/0 (RR: 0.00): Watts 0* (6), Haq 0* (0)
Scotland need 335 runs to win from 49 overs at 6.84 runs per over.
The Australian team is back out on the field, with Bracken apparently set to bowl the first over of the innings. Opening batsmen Fraser Watts and Haq follow.
Australia: 334 for six (50 overs)
Scotland need 335 to win at 6.70 runs per over
Scotland stuck to it, but Ponting's classy century and some late blasting from Watson and Hogg has taken the score way beyond what Scotland are capable of chasing. But on a good batting pitch and a small outfield, Scotland can be pretty pleased with their efforts.
Over 50: Hogg is able to get underneath the first ball and lever it over long-off for six runs. The next is slogged over midwicket for two more. The next ball is short, and Hogg pulls it over midwicket for a one-bounce four. Hogg hammers another six over long-off from ball four and heaves the next into the legside for another couple. Hogg heaves the final ball of the over into the legside for another boundary to end the over, and the last couple of overs have cost Scotland more than 40 runs.
Australia 334/6 (RR: 6.68): Watson 18* (11), Hogg 40* (15)
Brown to bowl the final over of the innings.
Over 49: Hogg picks up the first ball of Hoffmann's final over over midwicket for a one-bounce four. The next is full and straight, and Hogg digs it out for a single. Watson hammers another boundary, over cover this time, and the last couple of overs have been expensive as the 300 comes up. An uppercut bounces short of Haq and Watson gets a single. The next ball is full, and Hogg smacks it over long-on for a maximum. Hogg gets a single from the last ball, and Hoffman's excellent figures have taken a bit of a pounding at the end, but he's done well, leading the attack with Blain restricted to just four overs.
Australia 310/6 (RR: 6.33): Watson 18* (11), Hogg 16* (9)
Over 48: Watson forcesthe ball powerfully through cover, but gets just a single. Hogg works to leg and scampers through for two runs, but gets nothing from the next delivery. Hogg hammers the next ball to cover, but again it's just a single and a clever change of pace from Wright. Watson hammers the next over midwicket for four, and adds another boundary straight down the ground from the final ball.
Australia 293/6 (RR: 6.10): Watson 13* (9), Hogg 4* (5)
Over 47: Hogg gets his first ball away for a single, and Watson gets the next ball through square leg for a hard-run two. Watson bunts down the ground for a single, but Australia haven't exploded in these final overs. The next ball is signalled wide outside the left-hander's off stump, but Hogg can't get the final ball away.
Australia 281/6 (RR: 5.98): Watson 4* (6), Hogg 1* (2)
Brad Hogg is the new batsman for Australia.
WICKET!
MEK Hussey st Smith b Hoffmann 4 (6)
Brilliant work from Smith. Hussey drives and misses, and with the batsman's back foot a fraction off the ground, Smith whips off the bails. After lengthy deliberation the third umpire gets it right and sends Hussey packing. Scotland have done very well in these last couple of overs.
Hoffmann is back into the attack in place of Brown.
Over 46: Watson blocks his first two deliveries and then swings the next over square-leg for a single. Hussey pushes into the covers for a single, but that's a fine over from Wright at this stage.
Australia 276/5 (RR: 6.00): Hussey 4* (5), Watson 1* (3)
Watson is the new batsman.
WICKET!
RT Ponting b Wright 113 (93)
Ponting digs out a yorker from Wright first up, and then misses an attempted heave across the line and is bowled. Fine innings from the Aussie captain, but his opposite number has finally brought it to an end.
Wright is back into the firing line.
Over 45: Ponting guides behind square on the offside for a single. Brown bowls a wide down the legside that's smartly gathered in by Smith. Hussey works the next ball to leg for a single. Ponting gets two runs with a well-placed cut shot through cover. Ponting flat-bats the next ball over midwicket for a fifth six of his innings, and one that never went above head height. Ponting goes over the top again, but this time doesn't time it and gets just two. Ponting hits the final ball of the over out to long-off for a single to retain the strike.
Australia 274/4 (RR: 6.09): Ponting 113* (91), Hussey 3* (4)
Over 44: Hussey works his second ball to leg for a single to give Ponting the chance to get to three figures. Rogers waits and waits before bowling, but that doesn't faze Ponting who eases down the ground for an easy single. Brilliant innings, but would you expect anything less. Hussey hits a full-toss down the ground for a single, and Ponting keeps the strike with another run from ball six. That's the end of Rogers' spell, and he's done a good job for his side.
Australia 260/4 (RR: 5.91): Ponting 101* (86), Hussey 2* (3)
Ponting 100: 85 balls, 9 x 4s, 4 x 6s
Mike Hussey is the new batsman.
WICKET!
B Hodge c Hoffmann b Rogers 29 (28)
Hodge tries to go over the top, but picks out the fielder at long-on. Simple catch to Hoffmann, and good reward for Rogers.
Over 43: Hodge guides to third-man for a single. The next ball is full and beats Ponting and Smith, ricocheting off the keeper's pads for a bye. Hodge pulls to backward-square for a single, and Brown then beeats Ponting again outside off stump. Good bowling from Brown. Ponting goes to 99 with an uppish drive that lands short of McCallum and squirms under the sub fielder. Ponting can't get to his century from thefinal ball of the over, as he hits straight to McCallum at cover.
Australia 256/3 (RR: 5.95): Ponting 99* (84), Hodge 29* (27)
Over 42: Singles off the first two balls ring up the 250 for Australia. Hodge can't pierce the infield from the next three balls. Hodge sweeps the final ball for a single, but that's a good over from Rogers.
Australia 251/3 (RR: 5.98): Ponting 97* (80), Hodge 27* (25)
Rogers to continue with his left-arm spin.
Over 41: Hodge pushes into the covers and scampers through for a quick single. The 50 partnership comes up as Ponting eases Brown down the ground for a single. Just 37 balls for that milestone. Hodge guides a slower ball to third-man for one. The last ball of the over is very full, and Ponting plays a textbook straight drive that just misses the stumps and runs away for four. The interruption doesn't seem to have affected him.
Australia 248/3 (RR: 6.05): Ponting 96* (79), Hodge 25* (20)
The players are back out on the field, and Ponting and Hodge are ready to resume Australia's innings.
Rain Stopped Play
Hopefully this will just be a short shower in St Kitts. It's not too bad at the moment, but might just be getting a bit heavier.
Over 40.2: Ponting guides the ball behind square on the offside for a single. Hodge adds two with a sweet drive through the covers and into the gap. The umpires decide the ball has becom discoloured and needs changing. And while they're doing that, the rain starts to fall and the covers are called on.
Australia 241/3 (RR: 5.98): Ponting 91* (77), Hodge 23* (18)
Brown is back into the attack for Scotland as we head into the final 10 overs.
Over 40: Ponting hits Rogers hard down the track for a single, and Hodge nurdles the ball to leg for another. Ponting again hits straight down the ground for an easy single, and Hodge defends into the offside and scampers a quick single. Ponting still content with singles in this over, working the ball behind square on the legside.

Matthew Hayden is back at the top of the order alongside Adam Gilchrist - what a daunting task for Scotland's bowlers.
Scotland have sprung something of a surprise by deciding to bowl first after winning the toss. They might regret that in 50 overs' time. One shower on a cloudy morning meant the Warner Park pitch was under cover for a short period, and many of the surfaces in this tournament are expected to favour the team batting second. There were no surprise selections or last-minute injury problems on either side.
Australia therefore went in with a three-strong pace attack of Nathan Bracken, Shaun Tait and Glenn McGrath - with all-rounders Shane Watson and Brad Hogg their other two main bowling options.
Scotland, meanwhile, had to choose between Navdeep Poonia and Neil McCallum for the final batting spot - and the call went with the Warwickshire youngster.
