  • Powerplay overs in red.

New Zealand (179 for three) beat West Indies(177 all out) by seven wickets with 10.4 overs remaining.
There it is! the Windies lose two on the trot and now have a tough task ahead of them for the remainder of the Super Eights. A thorough performance from the Black Caps with great performances from Oram, Vettori and Bond with the ball, while Styris and Fleming again rocked up with the runs.

Over 39.2: Styris blocks and then lofts the ball over mid-on for four to bring up the victory.
    New Zealand 179/3 (RR: 4.55): Styris 80* (90), McMillan 33* (57)

    Gayle to continue.

Over 39: Who knows why Sarwan had a bowl? Anyway, he is picked off for five singles at will and now the Black Caps can end this match with one fine hit.
    New Zealand 175/3 (RR: 4.48): Styris 76* (88), McMillan 33* (57)
New Zealand need 3 runs to win from 11 overs at 0.27 runs per over.

Part-time leggie Ramnaresh Sarwan into the attack.

Over 38: Singles all around the ground and a a wide to boot. The end is very nigh for the Windies.
    New Zealand 170/3 (RR: 4.47): Styris 73* (85), McMillan 31* (54)
New Zealand need 8 runs to win from 12 overs at 0.66 runs per over.

Over 37: 16 runs off the over as Styris tucks into Collymore. Four through mid-on, two to long-on, tw past mid-off, a four smashed past the bowler and then finally a hammer through square-leg. Shame Corey. Try again the next over... if you're not taken out of the attack.
    New Zealand 147/3 (RR: 4.40): Styris 71* (83), McMillan 27* (50)
New Zealand need 15 runs to win from 13 overs at 1.15 runs per over.

    Collymore back in the attack.

Over 36: Styris and McMillan chase after Gayle going over the top with good success. Five runs off the over and the Windies have really lacked another strike-bowler to support Powell today.
    New Zealand 147/3 (RR: 4.08): Styris 55* (77), McMillan 27* (50)
New Zealand need 31 runs to win from 14 overs at 2.21 runs per over.

Over 35: McMillan plays out Powell's last over of his allotted 10 and the paceman finishes off with a maiden. Craig surviving a lbw shout off the last ball of the over.
    New Zealand 142/3 (RR: 4.05): Styris 51* (73), McMillan 26* (48)
New Zealand need 36 runs to win from 15 overs at 2.40 runs per over.

Over 34: Four singles around the ground as Gayle whizzes through another over of his part-timer spinners. Styris and McMillan looking oh so comfortable out in the middle the remainder of the New Zealand order may as well pack up their kit and ready for the hotel.
    New Zealand 142/3 (RR: 4.17): Styris 51* (73), McMillan 26* (42)
New Zealand need 36 runs to win from 16 overs at 2.25 runs per over.

Styris 50: 71 balls, 3 x 4s Styris notches up his third half-ton of the tournament with a quick single off Gayle.

Over 33: Poor return from Powell as he kicks off with a leg-side wide. Styris then drives a full-toss back past the bowler for four and McMillan baseball bats one through mid-off for a two - slow outfield stops the four.
    New Zealand 138/3 (RR: 4.18): Styris 49* (70), McMillan 24* (39)
New Zealand need 40 runs to win from 17 overs at 2.35 runs per over.

Powell back in the attack. Perhaps the last throw of the dice for the Windies.

Over 32: McMillan tries out some fancy footwork but gets no runs as Gayle delivers two dot balls to complete his broken over.
    New Zealand 130/3 (RR: 4.06): Styris 44* (66), McMillan 22* (37)
New Zealand need 48 runs to win from 18 overs at 2.66 runs per over.

    Gayle to complete his over.

Just a short delay, the covers are off and we are all set for play again.

Rain stopped play... surely not for too long though.

Over 31.4: Gayle continues and is picked off for three singles, left, right and centre. Not literally, but you get the picture. It's all too easy out there for the Black Caps now. Mother Nature is determined to intervene and sends some moderate showers. All and sundry scamper off the field and we will have a short delay on our hands.
    New Zealand 130/3 (RR: 4.10): Styris 44* (66), McMillan 22* (35)
New Zealand need 48 runs to win from 18.2 overs at 2.61 runs per over.

Over 31: Bravo bowling a couple of full-toss pies now - no good. McMillan takes him for three throught the covers and Styris - a solid candidate for man of the tournament thus far - moves closer and closer to his 50. The clouds and drizzle are back.
    New Zealand 127/3 (RR: 4.09): Styris 42* (63), McMillan 21* (34)
New Zealand need 51 runs to win from 19 overs at 2.68 runs per over.

Over 30: Nearly less than 50 runs to win now for the Black Caps. Styris sweeps in the air and gets a four. Gayle tosses it up a bit but Styris is up for the task and drives to long-on for two, and then for one. Seven runs off the over and NZ now taking this at a canter. But let us not talk too soon.
    New Zealand 122/3 (RR: 4.06): Styris 40* (60), McMillan 18* (31)
New Zealand need 56 runs to win from 20 overs at 2.80 runs per over.

Over 29: McMillan cuts hard and gets a boundary for his efforts. He swings and misses as Bravo mixes up his pace a bit as McMillan and Styris gather two more singles. If the Windies lose today it means they must win all four of their remaining Super Eight clashes if they want to make it in to the semis.
    New Zealand 115/3 (RR: 3.96): Styris 33* (56), McMillan 18* (29)
New Zealand need 63 runs to win from 21 overs at 3.00 runs per over.

Over 28: The outfield is not very fast so there are not many boundaries available along the ground. But that doesn't matter to Styris who is happy to do it in twos. He employs the sweep-shot immediately with the introduction of the spinner and picks up a brace of twos. McMillan gets another single and the Black Caps are really in the drving seat now after some initial worries with the loss of their skipper.
    New Zealand 109/3 (RR: 3.89): Styris 32* (55), McMillan 13* (24)
New Zealand need 69 runs to win from 22 overs at 3.13 runs per over.

Spinner Chris Gayle into the attack.

Over 27: Four runs off the over as Styris gets a single through extra covers and McMilland pierces the field on the off-side to get three, the ball hauled in just before it reached the rope. Bravo beats the bat on occasion but fails to get a wicket.
    New Zealand 104/3 (RR: 3.82): Styris 28* (52), McMillan 12* (21)
New Zealand need 74 runs to win from 23 overs at 3.24 runs per over.

Over 26: Fruitful over for New Zealand as Styris and McMillan take to the returning Smith. Styris dances down the track and lofts a four wide of mid-on. He then takes a single after which McMillan gets in on the act with a boundary on the drive and then another one on the pull -it's almost six but falls just short of the ropes. Nice. Rain still at bay.
    New Zealand 100/3 (RR: 3.84): Styris 27* (50), McMillan 9* (17)
New Zealand need 78 runs to win from 24 overs at 3.25 runs per over.

    Smith back in the attack.

Over 25: Chris Gayle gives away a bonus single with some sloppy fielding and then McMillan blocks out five balls as the Black Caps get just the solitary run of the over. It's still drizzling but perhaps it will stay just a drizzle. Let's hope.
    New Zealand 87/3 (RR: 3.48): Styris 22* (47), McMillan 1* (14)
New Zealand need 91 runs to win from 25 overs at 3.64 runs per over.

The rain clouds are looming and the groundsmen are ready with the covers.

Over 24: Styris guides two through backward point and then gets a run through mid-wicket. Collymore then ups the pressure a bit as McMillan sees out a couple of short balls, which go whizzing through to the 'keeper.
    New Zealand 86/3 (RR: 3.58): Styris 21* (46), McMillan 1* (9)
New Zealand need 92 runs to win from 26 overs at 3.53 runs per over.

Over 23: Three singles picked off around the ground as McMillan and Styris steady ship after the loss of their skipper. They don't want to go and fluff this imminent victory up like South Africa almost did against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
    New Zealand 83/3 (RR: 3.60): Styris 18* (44), McMillan 1* (5)
New Zealand need 95 runs to win from 27 overs at 3.51 runs per over.

Over 22: Less than 100 runs for the Black Caps to win now. Styris drives through cover point for two and then gets a single. McMillan not yet off the mark. The new batsman looking to impress after quite a while out in the international cold, but now back and in the form of his life. Unusual that he is batting above Jacob Oram.
    New Zealand 80/3 (RR: 3.63): Styris 16* (42), McMillan 0* (1)
New Zealand need 98 runs to win from 28 overs at 3.50 runs per over.

    Over 21:
    New Zealand 77/3 (RR: 3.66): Styris 13* (36), McMillan 0* (0)
New Zealand need 101 runs to win from 29 overs at 3.48 runs per over.

Craig McMillan is the new batter.

    S Fleming run out Lara 45 (66)

Two singles and some more dot balls and then... Fleming is run out for the second time in the tournament as Styris calls him through for a suicidal single. There was no run in that and a direct hit from rival skipper Lara brings to an end a good knock from Fleming. Pity - no half-ton and boy oh boy is Fleming unimpressed with Styris right now.

Over 20: Styris getting in his groove now and coming into his own. He whips through mid-on for two and the pulls a single. Fleming moves closer to his 50 with a tickle to fine-leg for one after facing a handful of dot balls.
    New Zealand 75/2 (RR: 3.76): Styris 12* (32), Fleming 44* (65)
New Zealand need 103 runs to win from 30 overs at 3.41 runs per over.

Over 19: Fiery over from Bravo who gets right up in Flemings' face on a couple of occasions. The NZ skipper and Styris pick off four singles around the ground and Scotty looking far more comfortable at the crease than he did a while ago.
    New Zealand 71/2 (RR: 3.73): Styris 9* (30), Fleming 43* (61)
New Zealand need 107 runs to win from 31 overs at 3.45 runs per over.

Over 18: Styris works through square-leg for two and then drives for a single. Nice shots those. Fleming then fends off a couple before out of the blue, deciding to launch Collymore over the long-leg fence for the first six of the innings. He is now closing in on his half-ton.
    New Zealand 67/2 (RR: 3.72): Styris 7* (27), Fleming 41* (58)
New Zealand need 111 runs to win from 32 overs at 3.46 runs per over.

Over 17: Bravo starts off with a slower-ball which turns out to be a full-toss too. Styris picks it off for a single and then Fleming lambastes a square-drive for four. Anhandful of devent dot balls and then a duo of singles make up the remainder of the all-rounder's first over of the match.
    New Zealand 58/2 (RR: 3.41): Styris 4* (23), Fleming 35* (56)
New Zealand need 120 runs to win from 33 overs at 3.63 runs per over.

    Dwayne Bravo into the attack.

    Drinks break!

Over 16: Just a single off the over off the bat of Styris, who seems to be struggling with his timing a bit. Fleming - oh so calm - fends off a couple of short balls and the players will now have a drink.
    New Zealand 51/2 (RR: 3.18): Styris 2* (21), Fleming 30* (52)
New Zealand need 127 runs to win from 34 overs at 3.73 runs per over.

Third and final powerplay will not be taken yet.

Over 15: The New Zealand half-ton arrives thanks to a leg-bye. That's it for the over as Styris continues on his slow way. Fleming in the meanwhile, continues to look solid. Will Powell bowl again or will Lara hold him back until the 'death' of the ruin-chase? Proably not.
    New Zealand 50/2 (RR: 3.37): Styris 1* (17), Fleming 30* (50)
New Zealand need 128 runs to win from 35 overs at 3.63 runs per over.

Powell to continue - eighth over on the trot.

Over 14: Styris pushes to mid-wicket and nabs his first run of the day. Fleming then flicks to fine-leg and gets another four. Windies need another wicket before this partnership starts to get established.
    New Zealand 49/2 (RR: 3.54): Styris 1* (12), Fleming 30* (49)
New Zealand need 129 runs to win from 36 overs at 3.56 runs per over.

Over 13: Powell bowls a no-ball, then Fleming smashes through point for four off next ball of the over but Powell pegs it back nicely to finish the over with five dot balls. Styris not given the opportunity to get off the mark that over.
    New Zealand 44/2 (RR: 3.38): Styris 0* (8), Fleming 26* (47)
New Zealand need 134 runs to win from 37 overs at 3.62 runs per over.

Over 12: Fleming sees off a couple and then works one away through square for a single. Styris plays out the remainder of the over, surviving a good shout for lbw. He was on the back foot and is lucky to still be out there.
    New Zealand 39/2 (RR: 3.25): Styris 0* (8), Fleming 22* (40)
New Zealand need 139 runs to win from 38 overs at 3.65 runs per over.

Over 11: Powell continues and the Windies must wish he could bowl 20 overs today. Fleming defends well and then pushes to point where Smith dives to field but deflects the ball and they take a single. Styris is still unable to get off the mark with the last two balls of the over.
    New Zealand 38/2 (RR: 3.45): Styris 0* (6), Fleming 21* (36)
New Zealand need 140 runs to win from 39 overs at 3.58 runs per over.

Second Poerplay to be taken by the Windies.

Over 10: Collymore starts off well with four dot balls to Fleming and then a drop-and-run for the single. Styris sees off the last ball of the over successfully but umpire Rudi Koertzen warns Collymore for running on the track. Styris not yet off the mark.
    New Zealand 37/2 (RR: 3.70): Styris 0* (4), Fleming 20* (32)
New Zealand need 141 runs to win from 40 overs at 3.52 runs per over.

    Corey Collymore into the attack.

Over 9: Styris is greeted by a fierce bouncer, then defends a full-ish ball and then plays out to the on-side. That's the end of the over and New Zealand now two down.
    New Zealand 36/2 (RR: 4.00): Styris 0* (3), Fleming 19* (27)
New Zealand need 142 runs to win from 41 oversat 3.46 runs per over.

Scott Styris is the new batsman out there.

    WICKET
    H Marshall c Lara b Powell 15 (23)

Marshall gets a luck edge for four, then getting a quick single. Fleming pulls a no-ball for just the one leaving Marshall the strike again. Powell holds one back a big and Marshall drives the slower ball straight down the throat of Brian Lara at mid-off. Cheers to Hamish but Fleming is still there and if the Windies can get him out soon the cat will indeed be amongst the pigeons.

Over 8: Opening the bowling with Smith is not working as he bowls a handful of average balls which are not put away but the fifth is - through the covers for four. Fleming in fine form right now. Marshall has not faced a ball for all of two overs.
    New Zealand 29/1 (RR: 3.62): Marshall 10* (20), Fleming 18* (26)
New Zealand need 149 runs to win from 42 overs at 3.54 runs per over.

Over 7: Fleming is seemingly in a hurry. He gets on the front foot, tries to pull, but mis-times and it just misses the hands of bowler Powell and scoots through mid-off for two. A couple of balls later Fleming middles one through gully and that's a beaut' of a boundary. The last ball of the over he pushes through square for one bringing to an end a rather eventful over.
    New Zealand 25/1 (RR: 3.57): Marshall 10* (20), Fleming 14* (20)
New Zealand need 153 runs to win from 43 overs at 3.55 runs per over.

Over 6: Fleming and Marshall get one more single each and Lendl Simmons so very nearly gets a run-out but misses the stumps by a whisker. Fleming and Marshall chat mid-pitch afterwards and hopefully for the Black Caps, that will be the end of the miscommunicative running between the wickets.
    New Zealand 18/1 (RR: 3.00): Marshall 10* (20), Fleming 7* (14)
New Zealand need 160 runs to win from 44 overs at 3.63 runs per over.

Over 5: Powell spoils a good over by pitching to full off the last and Fleming creams him past mid-off for four. The five balls prior to that were all dot as the NZ skipper could hardly get the ball off the square. If the Windies lose today they will have a tough path ahead of them if they want to make it to the semi-finals.
    New Zealand 16/1 (RR: 3.20): Marshall 9* (16), Fleming 6* (12)
New Zealand need 162 runs to win from 45 overs at 3.60 runs per over.

Over 4: Medium-pacer Smith races through his second over as Marshall and Fleming fail to penetrate the in-field on a couple of occasions, but do manage two singles for their efforts. Marshall sure will be wanting to make his World Cup call-up count.
    New Zealand 12/1 (RR: 3.00): Marshall 9* (16), Fleming 2* (6)
New Zealand need 166 runs to win from 46 overs at 3.60 runs per over.

Over 3: Marshall notches up his first four of the innings as he flicks over square-leg. He and Fleming bag a single each as Powell proves a tad expensive for this over at least. The Windies need at least three early wickets if they are to stand a chance of triumph in this game.
    New Zealand 10/1 (RR: 3.33): Marshall 8* (11), Fleming 1* (5)
New Zealand need 168 runs to win from 47 overs at 3.57 runs per over.

Over 2: Fleming does not get a chance to get off the mark just yet but Smith slips up with a wide and Marshall pushes through square-leg for a well-timed single. Marshall survives the second big shout of the innings for lbw. No luck for Smith.
    New Zealand 4/1 (RR: 2.00): Marshall 3* (7), Fleming 0* (3)
New Zealand need 174 runs to win from 48overs at 3.62 runs per over.

Dwayne Smith to share the new ball with Powell.

Over 1: Marshall prods to point to get off the mark after which Fleming plays out the reamining three balls of the over, surviving a big shout for lbw. Powell straight into and emmaculate line and length.
    New Zealand 1/1 (RR: 1.00): Marshall 1* (1), Fleming 0* (3)
New Zealand need 177 runs to win from 49 overs at 3.61 runs per over.

Hamish Marshall, only recently arriving in the country to replace Vincent, is the new man at the crease.

    WICKET
    P Fulton b Powell 0 (2)

The experiment of opening with Peter Fulton in the absence of the injured Lou Vincent has not worked. Powell gets one to pitch and straighten. Fulton plays at it half-heartedly but misses and is castled for a second-ball quacker.

Daren Powell will take the new ball for the Windies.

Peter Fulton and Stephen Fleming to open the batting for the Black Caps.

The players are back on the field.

    And now for the chase...

West Indies: 177 all out (44.4 overs)
New Zealand need 178 to win at 3.77 runs per over

Stephen Fleming got exactly what he wanted from his bowlers. He put the opposition into bat, they made a solid start, but then they kept on losing wickets at crucial intervals. Vettori picked up three wickets at the death, and two wickets in two balls. The West Indies might rue leaving out their premier paceman Jerome Taylor. Lara will be very frustrated. The Black Caps will be ecstatic. See you after the break for the run chase.

    WICKET
    C Collymore b Bond 0 (5)

Corey Collymore is the new batsman.

    WICKET

Denesh Ramdin is the new batsman.

    WICKET
