commentary: australia v bangladesh
A damp stadium awaited the players.
Australia (106 for no wicket) beat Bangladesh (104 for six) by 10 wickets with 8.1 overs remaining (rain-reduced match)
It took a while for the game to get going but we now have a result. A really easy win for the Aussies and a bit of a hammering for Bangladesh. Welcome runs for Gilchrist and Hayden but the injury to Watson will be a bit of a worry. Thanks for joining us for this short affair.
Over 13.5: Hayden ends it with two huge sixes over cow-corner and mid-wicket. Such force, such power. A single each for the two left-handers in between those sixes and that's 14 off the over and the end of the match.
Australia 106/0 (RR: 7.66): Gilchrist 59* (44), Hayden 47* (39)
Saqibul Hasan into the attack.
Over 13: Another huge over comes to and end as Gilchrist gets that six mentioned earlier and then adds to it with a cut for four. Two more singles end the expensive over with Gilchrist and Hayden having fun out there.
Australia 92/0 (RR: 7.07): Gilchrist 58* (43), Hayden 34* (35)
Australia need 13 runs to win from 9 overs at 1.55 runs per over.
Gilchrist 50: 40 balls, 7 x 4s, 1 x 6 Gilchrist lofts one over wide-ish long-on for a biggie to register his 50th ODI half-century. This man is great! Seemingly no stopping him now... for today at least.
Over 12: Gilchrist gets a quick single off the first ball of the over after which Hayden palys out a couple of defensive strokes before dancing down the wicket and powering one past mid-on for four. We think he was thinking six there but four will suffice hey.
Australia 80/0 (RR: 6.66): Gilchrist 47* (39), Hayden 33* (33)
Australia need 25 runs to win from 11 overs at 2.60 runs per over.
Over 11: Half way through the innings now and the Aussies are taking this at a canter. Seven runs off the over with Gilchrist (getting another four through cover in this over) now one hit away from his half-ton. This has been a through exectuion from Oz and the Bangladeshi spinners, though sort of keping the runs at bay, are not taking very much needed wickets.
Australia 75/0 (RR: 6.81): Gilchrist 46* (37), Hayden 29* (29)
Australia need 30 runs to win from 11 overs at 2.81 runs per over.
Over 10: Hayden slog-sweeps a slower one from Razzak. It's another four. Two square and one on the drive move Gilchrist closer to yet another career half-ton. The fielding restricitions are now over but that should not stop the big-hitting Aussie openers on their merry way.
Australia 68/0 (RR: 6.80): Gilchrist 40* (34), Hayden 28* (26)
Australia need 37 runs to win from 12 overs at 3.08 runs per over.
That's the end of the one and only powerplay of thsi innings.
Over 9: Only five runs off the last two overs, Australia. What's going on? Rafique kicks off his spell well as Hayden and Gilchrist take a single on the trot each.
Australia 61/0 (RR: 6.77): Gilchrist 37* (30), Hayden 24* (24)
Australia need 44 runs to win from 13 overs at 3.38 runs per over.
Spinner Mohammad Rafique into the attack too.
Over 8: Just three runs off the over as Gilchrist punches off the back foot through mid-off for two. Hayden fails to get a handful of deliveries off the square but eventually nabs a single with some good footwork.
Australia 59/0 (RR: 7.37): Gilchrist 36* (26), Hayden 23* (22)
Australia need 46 runs to win from 14 overs at 3.28 runs per over.
Spinner Abdur Razzak into the attack.
Over 7: A relatively quiet over in the context of the last six. Gilchrist and Hayden pick up four singles around the ground as Mortaza restores and air of respectability to the Bangladeshi attack... just a bit though.
Australia 56/0 (RR: 8.00): Gilchrist 34* (24), Hayden 22* (18)
Australia need 49 runs to win from 15 overs at 3.26 runs per over.
Over 6: Carnage time! Hayden gets a two through the covers and then another two through the slips. He then smashes a biggie over the mid-on fence and takes an easy single off a slow full-toss. Baisya pulls up injured and tries to bowl again twice more but cannot complete his delivery stride. Ahmed comes into the attack and Gilchrist completes the over with a trot through for another run.
Australia 51/0 (RR: 8.66): Gilchrist 32* (21), Hayden 20* (15)
Australia need 54 runs to win from 16 overs at 3.31 runs per over.
Baisya is unable to complete his over. He has injured his ankle and Aftab Ahmed will continue the over.
Over 5: Bangladesh have their fine-leg fielder up in the circle so Gilchrist punishes a leg-side lined ball past the fine-leg for four. He then gets on the back foot and punches one to third-man for a single leaving Hayden to collect another single for his blossoming total. But Hayden certainly playing second fiddle to Gilchrist at the moment.
Australia 40/0 (RR: 8.00): Gilchrist 31* (20), Hayden 9* (10)
Australia need 65 runs to win from 17 overs at 3.82 runs per over.
Over 4: Hayden takes a single off the first ball of the over and the Gilchrist gets three fours in three balls. A flick down to the fine-leg fence, a lovely drive past the bowler and then a perfectly timed stroke past mid-off. A dot ball and then another trot through for a sinle make up the over. Sad effort from Baisya who could have had Gilchrist caught by the 'keeper earlier on.
Australia 34/0 (RR: 8.50): Gilchrist 26* (16), Hayden 8* (8)
Australia need 71 runs to win from 18 overs at 3.94 runs per over.
Over 3: Hayden gets in on the boundary act with a four through point and then gets a quick single. Gilchrist palys out the remiander of the over as Mortaza settles into a better length than at the start of the over.
Australia 20/0 (RR: 6.66): Gilchrist 13* (11), Hayden 7* (7)
Australia need 85 runs to win from 19 overs at 4.52 runs per over.
Over 2: Baisya goes for 10 runs in his first match of the World Cup as Gilchris hammers one through extra cover for a boundary. 'Keeper Rahim then drops an edge which rockets through for four off the bat of Gilchrist - Bangladesh could have really done with that early breakthrough, not to be though. A single each for the openers make up the rest of the over.
Australia 15/0 (RR: 7.50): Gilchrist 13* (10), Hayden 2* (2)
Australia need 90 runs to win from 20 overs at 4.55 runs per over.
Tapash Baisya to share the new ball with Mortaza.
Over 1: Gilchrist plays out a couple, banging one to the covers but not piercing the field - no run. Thena solid drive - just three due to the slow outfield. Hayden edges through the slips for one and then Gilchrist drives solidly again for a single. Solid start for these two legendary openers. Certainly the best opeing pair in world cricket today. Sout Africa's AB De Villiers and Graeme Smith would beg to differ though.
Australia 5/0 (RR: 5.00): Gilchrist 4* (4), Hayden 1* (1)
Australia need 100 runs to win from 21 overs at 4.80 runs per over.
Mashrafe Mortaza to take the new ball for Bangladesh.
Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden to open the batting for the Aussies. Thought they might have given Mike Hussey a chance to open, guess not.
The players are back on the field.
And now for the Aussie chase...
Time for a short change of innings.
Bangladesh: 104 for six (22 overs)
Australia need 105 to win at 4.74 runs per over
Bangladesh were hoping for 180 but got nowhere near that. The Aussies should take this at a canter especially if Hayden and Gilchrist get going. Stick around for the show.
Over 22: Rahim misses the first ball and then gets a single to third-man. A lucky edge for four off the bat of Mortaza boost the Bangladeshi score past 100 and then another quick single to mid-on takes the minnows to 104. Enough? In all likelihood, not.
Bangladesh 104/6 (RR: 4.72): Rahim 2* (3), Mortaza 25* (17)
Mushfiqur Rahim is the new batsman.
WICKET
H Bashar c Ponting b Bracken 24 (43)
Bracken kicks off with a wide and then delivers a slower ball which is pulled straight down the throat of the Aussie skipper at wide-ish mid-on. A tidy little knock, albeit a bit slow, comes to an end.
Bracken to bowl the final over of the innings.
Over 21: Fruitful over for Bangladesh as Mortaza launches Symonds back over his head for a six. Four more singles around the ground bring the over's tally up to 10. Bashar playing the anchor role while Mortaza wields the willow.
Bangladesh 96/5 (RR: 4.57): Bashar 24* (42), Mortaza 20* (15)
Symonds back into the attack now.
Over 20: Bam! Finally a boundary for Bangladesh as McGrath tries to follow Mortaza, backing away. It's short and pulled through mid-wicket for a welcome four. McGrath tightens up his length (done with the short stuff seemingly) and piles on the full-ish ones. Bangladesh are up for it and they pick up three more runs off the over.
Bangladesh 86/5 (RR: 4.30): Bashar 22* (40), Mortaza 12* (11)
McGrath back into the attack too.
Over 19: It's a mixed back is Bracken's return over. A handful of full-tosses and a couple of slower balls get punched and jabbed through the ground for six singles off six balls. Bracken back in the attack but looking nowhere near as good when he had the new ball in hand.
Bangladesh 79/5 (RR: 4.15): Bashar 21* (37), Mortaza 6* (8)
Bracken back in the attack.
Over 18: Bangladesh sweeping and driving as much as possible now pick up four more singles and a lucky two over the 'keeper's head. Hogg continues to impress, and grabbing the opportunity availed to him with the retirement of Shane Warne with both hands.
Bangladesh 73/5 (RR: 4.05): Bashar 17* (33), Mortaza 4* (6)
Over 17: Mortaza is dancing all over the crease from the word go and trying to fool Tait with some of that fancy footwork. He gets a single through square-leg for his efforts and then Tait bowls a huge leg-side wide. Bashar sees off the last ball of the over and must bat through if his team are to post something close to 120. The run-rate has dropped below four now.
Bangladesh 67/5 (RR: 3.94): Bashar 14* (30), Mortaza 1* (3)
Mashrafe Mortaza is the next man in.

S Hasan c Gilchrist b Tait 25 (36)
Dot ball and then a lucky wicket as Tait bowls a shockingly wide delivery at which Hasan swings at and gets the edge. Easy catch for Gilchrist and the end of a promising stand between Hasan and Bashar. Aussies into the Bangladeshi lower-order now.
Over 16: Hasan picks up a single on the charge after which Hogg spills a retunr catch from Bashar. It was a tough one but was certainly there for the taking. Oh well... moving on. Bashar lives on and nabs another single and so does Hasan.
Bangladesh 65/4 (RR: 4.06): Bashar 14* (29), Hasan 25* (34)
Over 15: We have not seen a boundary for 46 balls now. Tait is back into the attack with a tidy over. A couple of deliveries right up in theblock-hole and some decent line and length restrict Bashar and Hasan to two singles each. Seven overs to go now and the Bangladeshis really need to start stepping on the gas.
Bangladesh 62/4 (RR: 4.13): Bashar 13* (25), Hasan 23* (32)
Tait back into the attack. Hopefully for a tighter spell than his previous.
Over 14: Tidy over from Hogg who goes for just four. The Bangladeshis were swinging like rusty gates earlier on and now are batting pretty slowly. Go figure! As far as turn for the spinners - there is not much out there today. It's not likely that these two will bowl in tandem for too much longer.
Bangladesh 58/4 (RR: 4.14): Bashar 11* (22), Hasan 21* (29)
Over 13: Play racing on now as Symonds and Hogg bowl in tandem. More singles pick off around the ground at will and Symonds so nearly gets a stumping, but not to be. It's called a wide to boot. Sharp work from 'keeper Adam Gilchrist.
Bangladesh 54/4 (RR: 4.15): Bashar 9* (19), Hasan 19* (26)
Symonds to continue...
Over 12: Five singles all around the ground as these two look to consolidate a bit after that flurry of four wickets. Bashar could be key here. He needs to call on all his experience and wisdom and put together a decent knock here.
Bangladesh 50/4 (RR: 4.16): Bashar 8* (15), Hasan 17* (24)
Confirmation that Watson has actually injured his calf muscle.
Over 11: Bashar and Hasan get a single each on the drive and the pull respectively, Watson then pulls up with injury. Symonds completes the over getting taken for two by Bashar on the cut.
Bangladesh 45/4 (RR: 4.10): Bashar 6* (12), Hasan 14* (21)
Oh dear! Shane Watson has opted to not complete his over. Some sort of injury, could be his hamstring again... Andrew Symonds to complete the over.
Over 10: Bashar and Hasan (struggling to penetrate the in-field for now) get to sweeping immediately and pick up a single each for their efforts. Hogg, quite the star of the World Cup, will be hoping to nab a couple of easy wickets to add to his ever-increasing tally.
Bangladesh 41/4 (RR: 4.10): Bashar 3* (8), Hasan 13* (19)
Spinner Brad Hogg into the attack too.
The one and only powerplay of the innings is now a thing of the past,
Over 9: Nice start from Watson who only goes for two. Much better than Tait's first over of 15 runs. Bashar gets off the mark with a solid cover-drive for two but then fails to middle a couple and plays out the rest of the over. Watson had a lot of critics before the start of the tournament but has shown them up quite a bit with some solid all-round performances.
Bangladesh 39/4 (RR: 4.33): Bashar 2* (7), Hasan 12* (14)
The expensive Tait out of the attack. Shane Watson in.
Over 8: Bashar fends off the last ball of the over. They're already four down are the Bangladeshis, surely they can bat out 22 overs.... surely.
Bangladesh 37/4 (RR: 4.62): Bashar 0* (1), Hasan 12* (14)
Habibul Bashar is the new batter.
WICKET
M Ashraful c Ponting b McGrath 6 (8)
Oh dear! it would have been nice to see Ashraful bat a bit longer. Alas, not to be as he tries to go big one too many times and is caught by the Aussie skipper at deep mid-on. Before that though Ashraful opened his arms nicely and lambasted one of the covers for four. A couple of dot balls and then the wicket. Cheers mate. Thanks for the entertainment... as short-lived as it was.
Over 7: Ponting has given Tait a seven-two field in favour of the off-side yet Tait is determined to err down the leg-side. Hasan flicks him through mid-wicket for two and Taitalso bowls two horrid leg-side wides. A short ball on the leg gets pulled, but mis-pulled and just a two is taken. Change the bowler Punter, change the bowler.
Bangladesh 33/3 (RR: 4.71): Ashraful 2* (3), Hasan 12* (14)
Over 6: Ashraful gets straight to the task at hand and whips his first-ball faced (which is pitched way outside the off-stump) to fine-leg for a single. Hasan restores a degree of normality to the shot selection, playing out the last two balls of the over with ease.
Bangladesh 26/3 (RR: 4.33): Ashraful 1* (1), Hasan 8* (10)
Mohammad Ashraful is the latest batsman out in the middle.
WICKET
A Ahmed c Bracken b McGrath 11 (7)
Hasan gets a single to square-leg and then the entertaining Ahmed has to go as an uppish drive over mid-off is not 'up' enough. Bracken jumps really high and takes a spectacular catch. When it's going your way everything just falls into your lap really. McGrath (56 WC wickets) now the leading wicket-taker in World Cup history! Wasim Akram, take a back seat mate.
Over 5: Typical start from Tait. He always takes too long to get into his stride. He kicks off with a wide, then gets lambasted through mid-wicekt for four by Ahmed who then plays a similar shot again but only gets three thanks to the slow out-field. Hasan then flashes hard at a wide one and gets a six over third-man! A quick single finishes off a terrible start from Tait. Bring Bracken back!
Bangladesh 24/2 (RR: 4.80): Ahmed 11* (6), Hasan 7* (6)
Shaun Tait into the attack. Bracken removed pretty early on.
Over 4: Hasan faces up to a dreadful wide down the leg-side. Very un-Glenn McGrath. But big the Aussie stalwart pulls hit back with three solid dot balls. Bangladesh in huge trouble early on.
Bangladesh 9/2 (RR: 2.25): Ahmed 4* (3), Hasan 0* (3)
20-year-old left-hander Saqibul Hasan is the new batsman out in the middle.
WICKET
S Nafees b McGrath 1 (4)
Yorker! Quick single for Ahmed and then Nafees clean bowled by the perfect yorker. McGrath ain't bowling quickly but he could pitch it on a pin right now. McGrath now joins Pakistani great Wasim Akram as leading wicket-taker in World Cup history.
Over 3: Ahmed gets off the mark beautifully with a straight drive down the ground for three. Nafees tries to smash the cover off the ball but misses completely. That's the end of a successful over for Bracken and the rest of the Aussies.
Bangladesh 7/1 (RR: 2.33): Ahmed 3* (1), Nafees 1* (3)
The big-hitting Aftab Ahmed is the new batter.
WICKET
T Iqbal c Hogg b Bracken 3 (14)
Well that was bound to happen. Iqbal hammers a drive, but just a single. Then Nafees gets off the mark with guide to third-man. Iqbal back on strike plays out a dot and then totally mis-times one to Hogg at mid-off. Easy catch. Easy wicket.
Over 2: McGrath nearly bowls the umpteenth maiden of his career but Iqbal gets a quick single to square-leg off the last ball. However, before that he was swinging and missing left, right and centre and looks to mean business so early on in the innings. We guess he needs to given they only have 22 overs to post something decent. McGrath will get the better of him eventually... no doubt.
Bangladesh 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Iqbal 2* (11), Nafees 0* (1)
Glenn McGrath to share the new ball with Bracken - no Tait yet.
Over 1: Bracken settles into a good line and length straight away as Iqbal fails to get the first balls off the square. He then drives where a diving Brad Hogg - playing in his 100th ODI - stops a boundary, just a single. Nafeez looks to pull the last ball of the over but fails to middle anything and he really just looks silly to play such a shot so early on.
Bangladesh 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Iqbal 1* (5), Nafees 0* (1)
Nathan Bracken to open the bowling.
Shahriar Nafees and Tamim Iqbal will open the batting for Bangladesh.
