commentary: england v sri lanka
Mahmood removes Jayasuriya.
By Dave Tickner
Sri Lanka (235 all out) beat England (233 for eight) by two runs.
A great game of cricket, and Bopara and Nixon almost took England from nowhere to one of the all-time great victories. But it's Sri Lanka who take the points, and England look to be heading home despite playing a full part in one of the games of the tournament.
Over 50: WICKET!
R Bopara b Fernando 52 (53)
Bopara swings and misses, and the off stump is knocked back. England have gone so close here but have fallen agonisingly short at the last.
Over 49.5 Mahmood gets a single from a thick inside edge. What can Bopara do from this final ball?
3 runs from 1 balls
Over 49.4 Bopara loses strike with a single to deep cover.
4 runs from 2 balls
Over 49.3 Bopara goes to 50 with two through the covers.
5 runs from 3 balls
Over 49.2 FOUR! Bopara helps the ball over the head of short fine-leg for a boundary.
7 runs from 4 balls
Over 49.1 Mahmood gets a single from the first ball. 11 runs from 5 balls
Mahmood on strike to face Fernando. Can he get a single?
Over 49: Bopara carves the final ball of the over to the point boundary for four runs. This game is still on for England.
England 220/6 (RR: 4.52): Bopara 45* (49), Mahmood 0* (0)
England need 12 runs to win from 6 balls at 12.00 runs per over.
Mahmood is the new batsman for England. He's not on strike for the final ball of the over.
WICKET!
P Nixon c Jayawardene b Malinga 42 (44)
Bopara gets a single from the first ball of the over, and Nixon whips to leg for another, but the next ball is a dot ball. Just a single comes from the fourth ball, and Nixon skies the fifth ball to cover, where Jayawardene takes the catch. That's probably the end, but a brilliant effort from Nixon.
Malinga to bowl the penultimate over.
Over 48: Bopara sweeps to short fine-leg, and Nixon scampers through for a single. Another reverse-sweep gets Nixon a single, but England need boundaries now. Bopara top-edges a sweep for another single. Nixon then gets his reverse-sweep away... for six over deep square-leg. Absolutely amazing shot, and Nixon then repeats the shot and gets four more! Great scenes!
England 217/6 (RR: 4.52): Bopara 39* (45), Nixon 41* (42)
England need 19 runs to win from 12 balls at 9.50 runs per over.
Murali in for his final over.
Over 47: A dot ball to start, but Bopara flicks the second ball to long-leg for a hard-run two. A single from the third ball brings up 200. Nixon hits down the ground and these two good runners again get back for the second. Nixon gets a single from the fifth ball, and Bopara gets another from the final ball of the over. Just seven off the over, which is OK for Sri Lanka.
England 204/6 (RR: 4.34): Bopara 37* (43), Nixon 30* (38)
England need 32 runs to win from 18 balls at 10.67 runs per over.
Malinga is back into the attack. We now how good he is in these closing overs.
Over 46: Nixon chips into the legside for a single, and Bopara bunts a slower ball into the air but safe. Another single. Nixon gets a third single from ball three, and Bopara gets a fourth single from the next ball, and Nixon gets a crucial four, wandering across his stumps and flicking the ball to fine-leg. Fine batting from Nixon, who gets two more from the final ball of the over. Again, that's ten taken from it.
England 197/6 (RR: 4.28): Bopara 33* (39), Nixon 27* (36)
England need 39 runs to win from 24 balls at 9.75 runs per over.
Fernando back into the attack. Have England just given themselves a sniff of a chance here?
Over 45: Bopara gets two with a top-edged sweep that Jayasuriya can't quite get to, and another sweep off the middle of the bat gets another couple of runs. A single follows, and Nixon brings up the 50 partnership with his trademark reverse-sweep. Bopara ends the over with a glorious pull shot over midwicket for four. Ten off the over - just what's needed.
England 187/6 (RR: 4.16): Bopara 31* (37), Nixon 19* (32)
England need 49 runs to win from 30 balls at 9.80 runs per over.
Murali back into the attack. He has two overs left. One wicket here would absolutely finish off this game if it isn't over already.
Over 44: Bopara flicks behind square on the legside for the first boundary in over 10 overs, and then gets a single to third-man. Nixon gets a single to mid-on, and Bopara keeps the strike with a drive into the covers for one.
England 177/6 (RR: 4.02): Bopara 22* (32), Nixon 18* (31)
England need 59 runs to win from 36 balls at 9.83 runs per over.
Over 43: Nixon works to leg for a single, and Bopara hits down the ground for another. A big wide from Dilshan is well taken by Sangakkara. Nixon sweeps hard for two runs from the final ball of the over, but time is running out now for England - they've got to just tee off now.
England 170/6 (RR: 3.95): Bopara 16* (28), Nixon 17* (29)
England need 66 runs to win from 42 balls at 9.43 runs per over.
Just three runs off that last over. These two have played sensibly, but at some point fairly soon they are going to have to decide to just go for it, with the rate approaching nine an over. Dilshan is back into the attack here. Which is a surprise. England may target Dilshan. Could get a wicket, but could go for a few.
Over 42: Nixon works Malinga to leg for a single, and Bopara works away to deep square-leg for another Nixon hits down the ground for a single before Malinga gets a yorker through Bopara and almost cleans up the leg stump.
England 165/6 (RR: 3.93): Bopara 15* (27), Nixon 14* (24)
England need 71 runs to win from 48 balls at 8.88 runs per over.
Over 41: Nixon misses a sweep and then reverse-sweeps for one. Bopara blocks two balls before getting two runs from a hard sweep into the legside.
England 162/6 (RR: 3.95): Bopara 14* (23), Nixon 12* (22)
England need 74 runs to win from 54 balls at 8.22 runs per over.
Murali back into the attack.
Over 40: Bopara works to leg for a single, and Nixon adds another to midwicket. Bopara guides to third-man for another single. Nixon asks the umpire to remove his hat to help him see the ball come out of Malinga's hand, but it doesn't do him much good - he misses the final ball of the over, but does get a bye as Sangakkara fails to gather.
England 159/6 (RR: 3.98): Bopara 12* (19), Nixon 11* (20)
England need 77 runs to win from 10 overs at 7.70 runs per over.
Malinga back into the attack.
Over 39: Nixon gets the ball into the legside for asingle despite Jayasuriya's lbw appeal. Bopara uses his wrists to get the ball into the covers wide of the fielder for a run. Nixon uses his feet to get to the pitch and work the ball to long-on for a single. Bopara takes a very dodgy single from the fourth ball, and Nixon gets another with a hard sweep. Bopara makes it six singles from the over, but that isn't enough for England.
England 155/6 (RR: 3.97): Bopara 10* (17), Nixon 10* (16)
England need 81 runs to win from 11 overs at 7.36 runs per over.
Jayasuriya into the attack in place of Murali. Clever from Jayawardene, keeping some Murali overs back just in case this partnership does develop.
Over 38: Bopara pushes to cover for a single. Nixon is down the track next ball, but is forced to defend. Big appeal for lbw against Nixon, but the ball pitched outside leg. The next ball is slanted across Nixon who plays and misses. Nixon pushes to point and takes a single, just beating Dilshan's throw to the stumps. Bopara digs out a yorker to end the over.
England 149/6 (RR: 3.92): Bopara 7* (14), Nixon 7* (13)
England need 87 runs to win from 12 overs at 7.25 runs per over.
Over 37: Nixon again reverse-sweeps for a single, and Bopara adds one more with an orthodox one. Nixon drives wide of mid-off for a single, and Bopara gets two with a top-edged sweep that falls short of Silva. That was the doosra from Murali. Bopara picks up a single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
England 147/6 (RR: 3.97): Bopara 6* (12), Nixon 6* (9)
England need 89 runs to win from 13 overs at 6.85 runs per over.
Over 36: Nixon gets a single to deep square-leg, and Bopara whips through midwicket for two more. He plays out the over solidly does Bopara, but the required rate continues to climb. In fairness, these two batsmen are trapped; they need to get on with things, but there's absolutely no batting to come, so they can't take risks.
England 141/6 (RR: 3.92): Bopara 3* (8), Nixon 4* (7)
England need 95 runs to win from 14 overs at 6.79 runs per over.
Over 35: Nixon plays his ridiculous reverse-sweep, despite the fact fielders are situated for just that shot. No run for an awful lot of effort. He gets a single from an orthodox sweep before Murali bowls a wide to the right-handed Bopara. A single on the legside takes England's nominal target into two figures, and Nixon does then manage to get a single from his insane obsession with the reverse-sweep.
England 138/6 (RR: 3.94): Bopara 1* (3), Nixon 3* (6)
England need 98 runs to win from 15 overs at 6.53 runs per over.
Over 34: Nixon gets an inside edge into his pads, and Bopara calls him through for a quick single. Bopara blocks the final ball of the over.
England 134/6 (RR: 3.94): Bopara 0* (1), Nixon 1* (2)
England need 102 runs to win from 16 overs at 6.38 runs per over.
Nixon is the new batsman, and England have two batsmen in who have yet to face a ball.
WICKET!
PD Collingwood lbw b Fernando 14 (20)
If the game wasn't up before, it is now. Collingwood plumb in front, and that means all three of England's best players have fallen in this powerplay, with England still needing over 100 for victory. Unlike Vaughan and Bell - who got howlers - they can have no complaints.
Bopara is the new batsman for England. He'll never have played under pressure like this in his young career.
The powerplay has worked out beautifully for Sri Lanka, removing England's two most dangerous batsmen in the five-over spell.
WICKET!
A Flintoff c Malinga b Fernando 2 (7)
The collapse is on. Flintoff tries to hit a slower ball over the top in the final powerplay over, but can't even get the ball out of the 30-yard circle. Simple catch for Malinga, and the game looks up for England with very little batting to come - just Bopara, Nixon and the bowlers.
Final over of the powerplay coming up, with Fernando to bowl it.
Over 33: Collingwood blocks the first five balls of Murali's over before coming down the track to hit through the covers for four runs. Top shot, and just eases the pressure slightly.
England 133/4 (RR: 4.03): Collingwood 14* (18), Flintoff 2* (6)
England need 103 runs to win from 17 overs at 6.06 runs per over.Over 32: Collingwood works to leg for a single, before Flintoff survives a huge lbw appeal, with the ball probably missing leg. Flintoff's footwork is almost non-existent at this early stage of his innings, but he gets an attempted yorker through midwicket for two to get off the mark.
England 129/4 (RR: 4.03): Collingwood 10* (12), Flintoff 2* (6)
England need 107 runs to win from 18 overs at 5.94 runs per over.
Fernando into the attack.
Over 31: Flintoff plays and misses the final ball of the over. England up against it now.
England 126/4 (RR: 4.06): Collingwood 9* (11), Flintoff 0* (1)
England need 110 runs to win from 19 overs at 5.79 runs per over.
WICKET!
KP Pietersen c & b Muralitharan 58 (80)
That's the wicket they wanted, and now Sri Lanka are favourites. Collingwood hits into the covers for a single. Pietersen tries to go over the top, but is beaten in the flight and is struck on the pads. Pietersen is on the sweep next ball, and nails it hard through square-leg for a boundary, but the next ball is the doosra and Pietersen gets a leading edge trying to work it to leg and Murali takes a simple return catch.
Over 30: Malinga starts with a brilliant inswinging yorker that Pietersen does well to dig out, although it was a no-ball anyway. Pietersen digs out another toecrusher. Another no-ball from Malinga follows, and these are welcome runs for England. Pietersen goes to 50 with a flick to midwicket, and he remains the key man in this match. Malinga goes for the yorker again to Collingwood but gets the line wrong and Collingwood clips it away to the boundary. Collingwood works to leg for a single, before a booming drive from Pietersen finds the cover fielder, but he smashes the final ball of the over down the ground for four more! Twelve runs from the first over of the powerplay, and it's just what England needed.
England 121/3 (RR: 4.03): Pietersen 54* (76), Collingwood 8* (10)
England need 115 runs to win from 20 overs at 5.75 runs per over.
Pietersen 50: 74 balls, 3 x 4s, 1 x 6
Here we go, the final powerplay. Huge five overs here. Malinga back into the attack.
Over 29: Two singles from the Murali over, and that means England now need over a run a ball. Take that final powerplay now, Mahela...
England 109/3 (RR: 3.76): Pietersen 49* (70), Collingwood 3* (8)
England need 127 runs to win from 21 overs at 6.05 runs per over.
Fielders come in with Collingwood on strike to Murali, and it's a mystery why Sri Lanka haven't taken that final powerplay.
Over 28: All happening here as Collingwood is almost run out and caught. The net result is five off the over, and no wickets down.
England 107/3 (RR: 3.82): Pietersen 48* (68), Collingwood 2* (4)
England need 129 runs to win from 22 overs at 5.86 runs per over.
Over 27: Huge appeal from Murali against Pietersen, but he's got a giant stride in, and England really would have been asking questions if that had been given as well. Maiden from Murali though, and the required rate is climbing inexorably towards six an over.
England 102/3 (RR: 3.78): Pietersen 45* (65), Collingwood 0* (1)
England need 134 runs to win from 23 overs at 5.83 runs per over.
Over 26: Pietersen gets a single, and Collingwood blocks the final ball of a controversial over.
England 102/3 (RR: 3.92): Pietersen 45* (59), Collingwood 0* (1)
England need 134 runs to win from 24 overs at 5.58 runs per over.
WICKET!
IR Bell run out (Jayasuriya) 47 (71)
An incredibly harshdecision puts England back in the mire. Pietersen hits hard down the ground, and Jayasuriya deflects the ball into the stumps. Bell makes his ground, but the bat momentarily bounces up before coming down again. It's impossible to tell where it was at the exact moment the stumps were broken, but third umpire Rudi Koertzen decides he's sure and gives him out. That is desperately unlucky - and that's two batsmen with good reason to feel aggrieved. The game swings again, with Sri Lanka favourites once more.
Over 25: Pietersen hits down the ground for a single, and Bell then almost chops onto his stumps as Murali comes round the wicket to him. Bell gets a single with a sweep into the legside to take England into three figures. Just two singles from Murali's first over as Pietersen misses an attempted cut at the final ball.
England 100/2 (RR: 4.00): Bell 46* (70), Pietersen 44* (56)
England need 136 runs to win from 25 overs at 5.44 runs per over.
Murali is into the attack. Crucial period in the game.
Over 24: Pietersen uses his feet to get tto the pitch and hit through midwicket for two runs. He hits down the ground for a single, and Bell adds another. Pietersen deflects the ball to short third-man, and Bell calls him through for another single.
England 98/2 (RR: 4.08): Bell 45* (66), Pietersen 43* (54)
England need 138 runs to win from 26 overs at 5.31 runs per over.
Over 23: Bell works to leg for a single, and Pietersen hits down the ground for one. Bell hits the next ball straight to Murali, and that's always a single as the great spinner hobbles round to field. Surely Jayawardene needs to get him on to bowl or get him off the field. He's costing runs in the field at the moment. Pietersen adds another single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
England 93/2 (RR: 4.04): Bell 44* (64), Pietersen 39* (50)
England need 143 runs to win from 27 overs at 5.30 runs per over.
Murali is back on the field, but Dilshan is continuing.
Over 22: Just a single to Bell from that over as Jayasuriya looks to build some pressure. With Murali off the field, he might have some extra bowling to do.
England 89/2 (RR: 4.05): Bell 42* (62), Pietersen 37* (45)
England need 147 runs to win from 28 overs at 5.25 runs per over.
Bad news for Sri Lanka - Murali has now left the field to get treatment on whatever that injury he's picked up might be.
Over 21: Complete mix-up between Pietersen and Bell, and a half-decent throw dfrom Jayawardene would have seen him run out by a distance. Luckily for England, the throw is terrible and Bell survives. Two good chances to remove Bell now spurned by Sri Lanka. How costly will that prove? Four singles from the over, as England look to tick things over.
England 88/2 (RR: 4.19): Bell 41* (58), Pietersen 37* (43)
England need 148 runs to win from 29 overs at 5.10 runs per over.
Over 20: Pietersen bunts down the ground for a single, and Bell adds another with a controlled cut to deep point. Jayasuriya is looking to get through his over quickly, but Pietersen backs away and makes him wait. Pietersen turns the ball to leg for a single, where Murali fields very gingerly with his feet. Murali is clearly struggling with some sort of injury here, and that could be a significant factor in this game.
England 84/2 (RR: 4.20): Bell 39* (56), Pietersen 35* (40)
England need 152 runs to win from 30 overs at 5.07 runs per over.
Over 19: Good bowling from Dilshan, getting through a maiden over to Bell, who is unable to get the ball down the ground or into a gap.
England 81/2 (RR: 4.26): Bell 38*(55), Pietersen 33* (35)
England need 155 runs to win from 31 overs at 5.00 runs per over.
Over 18: Pietersen works Jayasuriya to leg for a single, and Bell plays a delicate reverse-sweep for three more. Pietersen adds another single on the legside. Bell nurdles into the legside for a single. Six runs off the over.
England 81/2 (RR: 4.50): Bell 38* (49), Pietersen 33* (35)
England need 155 runs to win from 32 overs at 4.84 runs per over.
Over 17: Two singles from the first three balls of the over, and Pietersen comes down the track to work the fourth to midwicket for another. Bell works the last two balls of the over to leg, but can't find a gap for a single.
England 75/2 (RR: 4.41): Bell 34* (47), Pietersen 31* (31)
England need 161 runs to win from 33 overs at 4.88 runs per over.
Dilshan is into the attack, so it's spin at both ends but no Murali in sight.
Drinks. This game is beautifully poised now. No shock to learn that Pietersen is the key man. If he bats another 20 overs, England will win this game at a canter. Sri Lanka must get him, and get him soon. Pietersen v Murali - it should be good.
Over 16: Pietersen and Bell collect singles from the first two balls of the over. Pietersen blocks the next two before easing down the ground for another single. Three singles off the over, which will just about do for England at this stage.
England 72/2 (RR: 4.50): Bell 33* (44), Pietersen 29* (28)
England need 164 runs to win from 34 overs at 4.82 runs per over.
Jayasuriya is into the attack for Sri Lanka, and it appears the final powerplay will not be taken at this stage. Jayawardene is presumably looking to remove Pietersen before taking the powerplay, so this is a gamble. If he has to take the powerplay with Pietersen 60 or 70 not out, the game will probably be up for Sri Lanka.
Over 15: Poor ball from Vaas, offering Bell width, and the England man helps himself to four through point. Vaas overpitches, and Bell thumps a drive through extra-cover for a second boundary in the over. Pietersen's aggression seems to be infectious, bringing the best out of Bell here.
England 69/2 (RR: 4.60): Bell 32* (42), Pietersen 27* (24)
England need 167 runs to win from 35 overs at 4.77 runs per over.
Over 14: Bell cuts behind piont for two runs, and then takes a crazy single to Jayasuriya at mid-off. He would've been out by a distance with a hit, but the veteran Sri Lankan misses and the 50 partnership comes up.
England 61/2 (RR: 4.36): Bell 24* (36), Pietersen 27* (24)
England need 175 runs to win from 36 overs at 4.86 runs per over.
Over 13: Pietersen wanders across his stumps and lifts Vaas over midwicket for another boundary. Pietersen forces the next ball through the covers but doesn't run as well as he might have done and gets just two. The field is scattering, and Pietersen gets the next ball down the ground for a single. Bell guides to third-man for a single. Big leg-before appeal from Vaas, but the ball's pitched way outside leg and Bowden is uninterested.
England 58/2 (RR: 4.46): Bell 21* (31), Pietersen 27* (23)
England need 178 runs to win from 37 overs at 4.81 runs per over.
Over 12: England's 50 comes up as Bell gets a thick inside edge that beats Sangakkara and runs away for four. Good spell this for England, but Fernando comes back to end the over well with five dot balls.
England 50/2 (RR: 4.17): Bell 20* (30), Pietersen 20* (18)
England need 186 runs to win from 38 overs at 4.89 runs per over.
England 46/2 (RR: 4.18): Bell 16* (24), Pietersen 20* (18)
England need 190 runs to win from 39 overs at 4.87 runs per over.
Sri Lanka take the second powerplay immediately.
Over 10: Pietersen crunches a drive through cover. Not perfectly timed, but it has enough on it to reach the boundary. Pietersen uses his feet to Fernando and drives one-handed behind point for two more. It's already abundantly clear who might win this game for England.
England 33/2 (RR: 3.30): Bell 9* (19), Pietersen 14* (17)
England need 203 runs to win from 40 overs at 5.08 runs per over.
Fernando is into the attack.
Over 9: Bell drives sweetly through point for three runs, and Pietersen works to leg for a single. Another well-timed drive from Bell is well fielded by a diving Jayawardene at close cover, but he does get a hard-run two from a late cut to Fernando at third-man.
England 27/2 (RR: 3.00): Bell 9* (19), Pietersen 8* (11)
England need 209 runs to win from 41 overs at 5.10 runs per over.
Over 8: Malinga strays onto leg stump and is picked off for two runs by Bell. Bell gets another single with a flick to leg, and Pietersen gets his first boundary as Malinga tries a bouncer. Pietersen gets on the front foot and hammers it over midwicket. Fine batting, and so much depends on him.
England 21/2 (RR: 2.63): Bell 4* (14), Pietersen 7* (10)
England need 215 runs to win from 42 overs at 5.12 runs per over.
Over 7: Pietersen whips into the legside and scampers back for an extremely dodgy second run, but gets away with it. Pietersen hammers two glorious drives straight at Silva in the covers. Just two off the over as the pressure builds on England.
England 14/2 (RR: 2.00): Bell 1* (11), Pietersen 3* (7)
England need 222 runs to win from 43 overs at 5.16 runs per over.
Over 6: Pietersen hits his first ball down the ground for a single. Bell is beaten outside off stump before blocking the final ball of a brilliant over from Malinga. Sri Lanka may have been outrageously lucky with the first wicket, but there was no problem with this one.
England 12/2 (RR: 2.00): Bell 1* (11), Pietersen 1* (1)
England need 224 runs to win from 44 overs at 5.09 runs per over.
Pietersen is the new batsman for England, and he needs to justify his world number-one ranking here.

EC Joyce lbw b Malinga 10 (21)
Joyce is trapped on the crease and plumb lbw to the pace of Malinga. England are in deep trouble early in their innings here, with the middle-order once again being asked to bail them out of trouble.
Over 5: With Sangakkara up to the stumps, Jayawardene has gone very wide at slip, and Joyce edges fine of the Sri Lanka skipper for four runs. A classystraight drive from Joyce gets only two runs as Murali fields just inside the rope. Poor running there, but Joyce does well to take a sharp single from the fifth ball of the over.
England 11/1 (RR: 2.20): Joyce 10* (19), Bell 1* (8)
England need 225 runs to win from 45 overs at 5.00 runs per over.
Over 4: Three singles from the over as England try to rebuild.
England 4/1 (RR: 1.00): Joyce 3* (14), Bell 1* (7)
England need 232 runs to win from 46 overs at 5.04 runs per over.
Over 3: Bell plays out the over, and this is an excellent start from Sri Lanka.
England 1/1 (RR: 0.33): Joyce 1* (11), Bell 0* (4)
England need 235 runs to win from 47 overs at 5.00 runs per over.
Bell is the new batsman. England have two batsmen in who could do with a score.
WICKET!
MP Vaughan c Sangakkara b Vaas 0 (3)
Vaughan finds another bizarre way to get out, falling to a quite brilliant catch by Sangakkara, down the legside standing up to the stumps. Rank bad ball from Vaas, but it's taken a big wicket. Replays suggest Vaughan didn't even hit it, so it's even more unfortunate.
Over 2: Joyce drives nicely but straight to mid-off, before one stays low to Joyce, going under the defensive shot and bouncing through to the keeper. Joyce lets the last ball of the over go through to the keeper, so Malinga starts well with a maiden.
England 1/0 (RR: 0.50): Joyce 1* (11), Vaughan 0* (1)
England need 235 runs to win from 48 overs at 4.90 runs per over.
Malinga to share the new ball.
Over 1: Joyce starts the over watchfully, letting the ball through to Sangakkara where possible, before getting off the mark fifth ball with a thick outside edge to third-man. Vaughan studiously defends the final ball of the over.
England 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Joyce 1* (5), Vaughan 0* (1)
England need 235 runs to win from 49 overs at 4.80 runs per over.
Vaas to bowl the first over of the innings. Joyce on strike.
Joyce and Vaughan follow the Sri Lanka fielders out, and if England can get a good start here, they'll be big favourites to pick up a crucial victory.
Sri Lanka: 235 all out (50 overs)
England need 236 to win at 4.72 runs per over
That is a brilliant effort from England. This is a very good batting pitch, and that is a below-par score. Definitely. Not only was the bowling impressive, but the fielding was superb. Sri Lanka may have misjudged this pitch early in their innings and never really got going. Can England take this opportunity...

D Fernando run out (Pietersen/Nixon) 2 (2)
Fernando gets an edge and scurries through for a single. A chest-high full-toss from Mahmood is rightly called no-ball, and Murali spoons it away for a single. Fernando hits the final ball of the innings to cover for an easy single, but he tries to come back for a second and is run out by Nixon.
Fernando is the final batsman for Sri Lanka.
WICKET!
R Arnold c Joyce b Mahmood 20 (22)
Arnold drives into the covers for a single. Murali shovels his first ball into the legside for one run. A big wide from Mahmood outside the off stump is missed by Nixon which costs an extra two runs. He's been patchy behind the stumps today. Arnold hits a full-toss over midwicket, but doesn't get hold of it completely and Joyce takes a good catch at head height on the boundary.
Muttiah Muralitharan is the new batsman for Sri Lanka. Arnold on strike, though.
WICKET!
L Malinga c Nixon b Mahmood 2 (7)
Mahmood starts the over with a bouncer that Malinga can just top-edge highinto the sky. Nixon runs back to take a safe catch.
Mahmood to bowl the final over of the innings.
Over 49: Flintoff gives Malinga a taste of his own medicine, whistling a bouncer past his grille and then forcing him to dig out a yorker. Malinga shovels the third ball into the legside for a single. Arnold clubs down the ground for a single, the ball deflecting off Malinga's boot which probably saved three. Malinga misses a yorker that just shaves the leg stump and the batsmen get a bye as Nixon scrambles to gather. Arnold gets two from the final ball of an excellent spell of bowling from Flintoff.
Sri Lanka 226/7 (RR: 4.61): Arnold 19* (20), Malinga 2* (6)
Over 48: Collingwood bowling after taking that stunning catch, and he's still doing the job. Just two singles from the over. England are now favourites with the bookies. Steady on chaps.
Sri Lanka 221/7 (RR: 4.60): Arnold 16* (18), Malinga 1* (2)
Over 47: Lasith Malinga is the new batsman, with Sri Lanka looking sure to finish short of what they would have set out to score.
Sri Lanka 219/7 (RR: 4.66): Arnold 15* (14), Malinga 0* (0)

WPUJC Vaas c Collingwood b Flintoff 4 (5)
Vaas starts his innings with two dot balls, but does manage to get his third throug midwicket for two runs, and chips the next ball over cover for another deuce but then carves to Collingwood at backward-point who takes a stunning one-handed catch moving to his right. This is really good stuff from England.
Chaminda Vaas is the new batsman.
WICKET!
LPC Silva b Flintoff 23 (37)
Start the pedalo. Flintoff starts with an inswinging yorker that's just two fast, too accurate and too good for Silva, shooting under the bat and knocking back off stump. Top bowling.
Flintoff is back into the attack to bowl the last two overs from this end.
Over 46: Arnold gets Collingwood to third-man for a single, and Silva sweeps to fine-leg for two. Silva thumps a slower ball to deep cover for a single, and Arnold adds another down the ground. Nixon lets the last ball of the over through his legs for a bye, but just six runs from it which England will settle for at this stage. Amazingly, no over in this innings has cost more than nine runs.
Sri Lanka 215/5 (RR: 4.67): Silva 23* (36), Arnold 15* (14)
Over 45: Arnold gets a single from the second ball of the over, and the batsmen scamper a leg-bye from ball three. Arnold gloves the fourth ball to fine-leg for two more and gets four with a classical straight drive that beats Bopara's despairing dive. Arnold gets a single from the final ball of the over. Nine from Anderson's final over, but he's done a fine job for England today.
Sri Lanka 209/5 (RR: 4.64): Silva 20* (33), Arnold 13* (11)
Over 44: Arnold drives into the covers for two runs, and gets a single with a guide to third-man to bring up the 200. But Silva gets nothing from the final three balls of the over, and that's fantastic for England. This still looks like a 250-plus wicket to me.
Sri Lanka 200/5 (RR: 4.55): Silva 20* (32), Arnold 5* (6)
Collingwood is back into the attack as Vaughan continues to rotate his bowling options.
Over 43: Silva drops the ball into the covers for a single. Arnold gets off the mark with a flick into the legside for a single. Another run for Silva from a dab into the offside, and the boundaries aren't coming. Arnold gets another single from the final ball of the over, and that'll do nicely for England.
Sri Lanka 197/5 (RR: 4.58): Silva 20* (29), Arnold 2* (3)
Russel Arnold is the new batsman, with Sri Lanka wobbling.
WICKET!
T Dilshan run out (Bell) 5 (6)
Stunning work from Bell, and a bonus wicket for England. Silva drives hard into the covers, where Bell takes off to his left to make a stunning diving stop. He then gets to his feet and throws down the stumps at the bowler's end where Dilshan had set off thinking the single was on. It wasn't, and he's out by a yard.
Anderson is back into the attack. He's got two overs in his locker.
Over 42: Mahmood starts with a slower ball that finds the outside edge but falls short of Nixon. The second ball is down the legside and easily helped on its way to the boundary by Silva, who then adds a single with a firm push to Panesar at mid-off. Dilshan pulls to deep square-leg for two runs. The final ball of the over is dug out by Dilshan for a single, and he gets an overthrow as Collingwood shies at the stumps.
Sri Lanka 193/4 (RR: 4.60): Silva 18* (26), Dilshan 5* (6)
Mahmood is back into the attack for England.
Over 41: Good start to the over from Collingwood, mixing his pace up and bowling three dot balls. Silva gets a single from the fourth ball of the over, but Dilshan gets nothing from the last two balls. Brilliant over from Collingwood at this stage of proceedings.
Sri Lanka 184/4 (RR: 4.49): Silva 13* (22), Dilshan 1* (4)
Over 40: Dilshan almost picks out Anderson at mid-on with a lofted drive, but gets a single. Silva gets four with a hard sweep through square-leg, and adds two more with a wristy flick through midwicket. Panesar's going for a few here, and Silva gets a quick single from the final ball of the over.
Sri Lanka 183/4 (RR: 4.58): Silva 12* (18), Dilshan 1* (2)
Over 39: Silva blocks the final two balls of the over, a successful one for England and Collingwood.
Sri Lanka 175/4 (RR: 4.49): Silva 5* (14), Dilshan 0* (0)
Tillakaratne Dilshan is the new batsman for Sri Lanka. He won't be on strike - the batsmen crossed.
WICKET!
M Jayawardene c Joyce b Collingwood 56 (61)
Jayawardene gets a boundary with a flick to fine-leg, but then goes for a big shot over midwicket, and succeeds only in picking out Joyce on the boundary. Big wicket at a crucial time for England.
Collingwood into the attack in place of Flintoff.
Over 38: Jayawardene plays down the ground for a single, and Silva uses his feet nicely to get to the pitch and work Panesar to midwicket for two runs. The final ball of the over evades Nixon as Silva misses a sweep and the batsmen get through for a bye.
Sri Lanka 170/3 (RR: 4.47): Jayawardene 52* (59), Silva 4* (10)
Over 37: Silva plays to third-man for a single, before Flintoff almost gets one through Jayawardene's defences. Bit of inswing there for Freddie, possibly reverse. The next ball holds its line and beats Jayawardene outside the off stump. Jayawardene gets a single to deep cover from the final ball of the over, a good one from Flintoff.
Sri Lanka 166/3 (RR: 4.49): Jayawardene 51* (56), Silva 2* (7)
Over 36: Three dot balls from Panesar before Silva can get him away for a single to the legside. Jayawardene cuts hard for two to bring up a quality half-century, scored at almost a run a ball without a single risk. Just three runs from a decent Panesar over.
Sri Lanka 164/3 (RR: 4.56): Jayawardene 50* (52), Silva 1* (5)
Jayawardene 50: 51 balls, 3 x 4s
Panesar back into the attack.
Over 35: The final ball of the over comes off the pads for a leg-bye, but a successful over from Flintoff, doing the job his captain wanted.
Sri Lanka 161/3 (RR: 4.60): Jayawardene 48* (50), Silva 0* (1)
Chamara Silva is the new batsman for Sri Lanka.
WICKET!
WU Tharanga c Pietersenb Flintoff 62 (103)
Tharanga cuts uppishly but well wide of the fielder at backward-point for four runs, but his pedestrian innings ends three balls later, mistiming a pull straight into the hands of Pietersen at mid-on. That's the wicket England needed, and Tharanga has failed to do the job needed of him after taking so long to get going.
With England needing a wicket to check Sri Lanka's progress, Vaughan turns to Flintoff.
Over 34: Tharanga slashes to third-man for a single, and Jayawardene adds another. Tharanga cuts hard to backward-point for two runs, and gets two more with a drive into the covers. Tharanga nurdles into the legside for a single to make it seven risk-free runs from the over.
Sri Lanka 156/2 (RR: 4.59): Tharanga 58* (98), Jayawardene 48* (50)
Drinks. Sri Lanka are just starting to get going here, with England's lack of menace in the middle overs hurting them again. Collingwood and the spinners haven't exactly gone round the park, but they haven't looked like taking wickets either. England need a breakthrough.
Over 33: Tharanga dabs to third-man for two to bring up a quiet half-century. Nobody much claps. Tharanga gets another single down the ground, and Jayawardene gets four with a perfectly-placed sweep to deep square-leg, bisecting the two men in the deep and getting four. Singles from the final two balls of the over make it a good over for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka 149/2 (RR: 4.52): Tharanga 52* (93), Jayawardene 47* (49)
Tharanga 50: 91 balls, 1 x 4
Change of ends for Panesar.
Over 32: Jayawardene pushes a single, and Tharanga then plays out three dot balls. Tharanga then drives straight to Bell at cover, but he lets it through to give Tharanga a single and release the pressure. Poor work from Bell, and it costs an extra two as Jayawardene dabs the last ball of the over to third-man.
Sri Lanka 140/2 (RR: 4.38): Tharanga 48* (89), Jayawardene 42* (47)
Vaughan does make a change, but it's Collingwood who comes back into the attack.
Over 31: Still this Sri Lankan pair are content to nurdle the England captain around for singles.
Sri Lanka 136/2 (RR: 4.39): Tharanga 47* (85), Jayawardene 39* (45)
Over 30: Jayawardene gets a single down the ground, to Nixon's vocal and foul-mouthed annoyance. Tharanga then gets his first boundary in the 30th over with a drive over mid-off. Two singles from the next two balls before Tharanga goes over the top again, and is lucky that the ball bounces short of Anderson at long-off. The run-rate is just starting to climb, and it might be time for Vaughan to gamble on a couple of overs from Mahmood or Flintoff.
Sri Lanka 132/2 (RR: 4.40): Tharanga 45* (81), Jayawardene 38* (43)
Over 29: Jayawardene hits down the ground for a single, and Tharanga adds another from ball two. Jayawardene flicks behind square on the legside for two runs and then defends to mid-on for a single. Tharanga blocks the last two balls, and he's reached the exact point in the innings where Bell or Joyce would get out.
Sri Lanka 124/2 (RR: 4.28): Tharanga 39* (78), Jayawardene 35* (40)
Over 28: Tharanga sweeps for a single, and Jayawardene follows suit. Tharanga drives through the covers for two, and gets three with a nice late cut. Jayawardene gets a single from the final ball of the over to bring up the 50 partnership.
Sri Lanka 119/2 (RR: 4.25): Tharanga 38* (75), Jayawardene 31* (37)
Over 27: Tharanga tickles round the corner for a single, and Jayawardene works to leg for another. Vaughan takes the pace right off the next one, and Tharanga plays to square-leg for one more. Each batsman gets a single downthe ground from the last two balls of Vaughan's over. Reasonable start for the England captain, just five singles from the over.
Sri Lanka 111/2 (RR: 4.11): Tharanga 32* (71), Jayawardene 29* (35)
Spin from both ends now, with Vaughan bringing himself into the attack.
Over 26: Tharanga gets a single with a hard sweep to deep square-leg, and Jayawardene adds another with a thick inside edge into the legside. Tharanga ends the over with another quick single, but Panesar has settled in nicely here.
Sri Lanka 106/2 (RR: 4.08): Tharanga 29* (67), Jayawardene 27* (33)
Over 25: Collingwood drops short to Jayawardene who pulls the ball round the corner for four runs with Panesar unable to cut it off. Jayawardene brings up the 100 with a mishit and aerial drive down the ground that garners two runs. Jayawardene drives to long-off for a single, and he is at least looking to get the rate going the right way. Tharanga pushes down the ground for a single to keep the strike.
Sri Lanka 103/2 (RR: 4.12): Tharanga 27* (63), Jayawardene 26* (31)
Over 24: Jayawardene turns Panesar's first ball to leg for a single. Tharanga adds another single with a premeditated sweep shot, and Jayawardene does the same from the final ball of the over. Tidy start for Monty.
Sri Lanka 95/2 (RR: 3.96): Tharanga 26* (62), Jayawardene 19* (26)
Spin for the first time today as Vaughan throws the ball to Panesar. Cue cheers from the crowd, which is bolstered by a large English contingent.
Over 23: Lovely boundary from Jayawardene, placing a drive through the cover ring, and timing the ball perfectly. Jayawardene tries to guide a slower ball from Collingwood to third-man but makes no contact. Jayawardene keeps the strike with a firm push down the ground for a single.
Sri Lanka 92/2 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 25* (59), Jayawardene 17* (23)
Over 22: Flintoff keeps the pressure on, going for just three singles from the over as these two batsmen look to consolidate.
Sri Lanka 87/2 (RR: 3.95): Tharanga 25* (59), Jayawardene 12* (17)
Over 21: Jayawardene drives into the covers, where sub fielder Liam Plunkett's tumbling stop keeps him down to a single. Collingwood bowls a wide down the legside to Tharanga, and Nixon takes smartly, whipping off the bails for good measure. Tharanga gets a single with a cut behind point, but Bopara probably saved three runs there, getting a hand to it diving to his left. He's fielded exceptionally well today. Jayawardene drives to Flintoff's left at mid-off for another single. Tidy enough start from Collingwood.
Sri Lanka 84/2 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 24* (57), Jayawardene 10* (13)
With the fielding restrictions relaxed now, Collingwood is straight into the attack. Interesting to see how his neck injury affects him.
That's the end of the powerplays, and England will be mighty pleased with their efforts.
Over 20: Tharanga tucks to leg for a single, and he appears to be setting himself to bat through here. He's yet to hit a boundary in almost 20 overs of batting. Bopara makes another good stop at backward-point to prevent Jayawardene getting anything from an attempted guide to third-man, but he does get three with a neat clip through midwicket as Flintoff strays into the pads.
Sri Lanka 80/2 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 23* (54), Jayawardene 8* (10)
Flintoff to bowl the final over of the powerplay.
Over 19: Jayawardene gets off the mark with a genuine edge to third-man for two runs, and Mahmood oversteps to add another run to the total. Jayawardene cuts hard to backward point where Bopara makes a good tumbling stop toprevent any runs. Jayawardene gets three with a controlled drive through the covers, and Tharanga adds a single from the final ball of the over.
Sri Lanka 76/2 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 22* (53), Jayawardene 5* (5)
Mahela Jayawardene is the new batsman for Sri Lanka.
WICKET!
K Sangakkara c Collingwood b Mahmood 17 (33)
Huge wicket for England, as Sangakkara is suckered in by Mahmood's slower ball, spooning a simple catch to Collingwood at backward point. Whisper it, but England are on top here.
Over 18: Sangakkara defends to Panesar at mid-on and gets through for a single. A fine short ball from Flintoff is well played by Tharanga, swaying out of the way and letting the ball through to Nixon. Excellent over from Flintoff, costing just a single, and this is much-improved fare from England.
Sri Lanka 69/1 (RR: 3.83): Tharanga 21* (52), Sangakkara 17* (32)
Over 17: Good comeback over from Mahmood, just a single and a leg-bye coming from it. Good work this from England on what still looks a fine batting pitch.
Sri Lanka 68/1 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 21* (49), Sangakkara 16* (29)
Anderson is out of the attack after eight excellent overs, with Mahmood changing ends.
Drinks. Both teams will be reasonably pleased here. Sri Lanka have got through the new ball with only one wicket down, but the England bowlers have done a decent job of keeping the runs down, and have generally bowled in the right areas. Anderson in particular con consider himself very unfortunate to be wicketless at this stage.
Over 16: Flintoff is round the wicket to the left-handers now, but Sangakkara again cashes in on a slightly overpitched delivery, driving powerfully through extra-cover for four. Sangakkara's looking good here, and gets a single with a push down the ground. Tharanga keeps the strike, guiding the ball backward of point for a single.
Sri Lanka 66/1 (RR: 4.13): Tharanga 20* (46), Sangakkara 16* (26)
With the run-rate just four an over, England unsurprisingly take the final powerplay. This could be a crucial phase of the game.
Over 15: Anderson still going, and the first ball of his eighth over flicks off the pads for two leg-byes. Anderson then beats Tharanga outside the off stump for the umpteenth time in his spell. Tharanga tucks a short ball into the legside for a single. Sangakkara is down the track to the final ball of the over, helping it to deep square-leg for a single. Just one run, but a sign of intent. Anderson did well though, saw him coming and dragged it short.
Sri Lanka 60/1 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 19* (44), Sangakkara 11* (22)
Over 14: Sangakkara drives sweetly into the covers, but Bell makes a brilliant diving stop to turn a certain four into just a single. Tharanga picks up a well-judged single from a push into the covers, and Sangakkara then gets a glorious drive through the covers for four as Flintoff slightly overpitches.
Sri Lanka 56/1 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 18* (40), Sangakkara 10* (20)
Over 13: Lovely shot through the covers from Tharanga, but Ravi Bopara gives good pursuit and manages to prevent a third run. Good fielding from the Essex youngster, and another good over from Anderson, just those two runs off it as he maintains impeccable lines on and around off stump.
Sri Lanka 50/1 (RR: 3.85): Tharanga 17* (38), Sangakkara 5* (16)
Anderson into his seventh over now, so a lengthy spell for the opener.
Over 12: Good start from Flintoff, right on target from the start. the only blemish is a no-ball, with Sangakkara onthe defensive throughout.
Sri Lanka 48/1 (RR: 4.00): Tharanga 15* (32), Sangakkara 5* (16)
First bowling change from Vaughan, bringing Andrew Flintoff into the attack.
Over 11: Sangakkara gets two runs with a mistimed uppish pull shot to a ball that isn't really short enough, and adds another single from the final ball of the overm another accurate one from Anderson.
Sri Lanka 47/1 (RR: 4.27): Tharanga 15* (32), Sangakkara 5* (9)
England take the second powerplay. Anderson to continue.
Over 10: Good cricket all round, as Mahmood bowls a perfect yorker to Sangakkara, who digs it out well and scampers through for a well-judged single despite Ian Bell coming in to field and throwing down the stumps. Lovely stuff. Tharanga pushes to mid-off for another safe single, and Sangakkara works a slower ball from Mahmood into the legside for a single, but that's a tidy over from Mahmood, who has settled after some wayward stuff early on. No doubt the wicket of Jayasuriya helped.
Sri Lanka 44/1 (RR: 4.40): Tharanga 15* (32), Sangakkara 2* (3)
Over 9: Tharanga drives nicely behind point, but Monty Panesar makes a decent sliding stop on the boundary to save a couple of runs and receive his usual ovation for non-shambolic fielding. Tharanga gets two somewhat luckier runs with an inside edge over the top of middle stump. Another good over from Anderson, who could easily have picked up a couple of wickets in his opening overs.
Sri Lanka 41/1 (RR: 4.56): Tharanga 14* (29), Sangakkara 0* (0)
Over 8: Kumar Sangakkara is the new batsman for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka 37/1 (RR: 4.63): Tharanga 10* (23), Sangakkara 0* (0)

ST Jayasuriya b Mahmood 25 (26)
Tharanga gets across his stumps to work off his hip for a single, but Jayasuriya almost gets into a tangle after Mahmood gets some extra bounce and the leading edge almost offers a return catch. An excellent bouncer from Mahmood has Jayasuriya in all sorts of trouble, but his top-edged hook has enough on it to clear the rope behind the wicketkeeper for six undeserved runs. But Jayasuriya's luck runs out as he chops a full ball into his stumps, paying the price for a lack of footwork. Huge breakthrough for England.
Over 7: Tharanga works to leg for a single, and a long-hop from Anderson is pulled away over square-leg for four, helped by a slightly shoddy effort on the boundary from Mahmood, flicking the ball back into his foot and kicking the ball over the rope. Jayasuriya gets a slightly lucky four with a thick inside edge to the vacant fine-leg boundary. Nine from the over, but not a bad one from Anderson, apart from that one short ball.
Sri Lanka 30/0 (RR: 4.29): Tharanga 9* (22), Jayasuriya 19* (21)
Over 6: Mahmood is still struggling with his line here, as the first ball of the over comes off Jayasuriya's pads for a leg-bye, while another legside delivery is clipped away for a single by Tharanga. Mahmood follows up with a good bouncer though, forcing Jayasuriya to jerk his head out of the way. Mahmood does settle into a good line for the end of the over, mixing up his length nicely and keeping Jayasuriya on the defensive.
Sri Lanka 21/0 (RR: 3.50): Tharanga 8* (20), Jayasuriya 11* (17)
Over 5: Tharanga defends into the covers, and again the ball races across the turf and the batsmen are able to complete two runs. A mistimed drive wide of mid-off gets Tharanga two more runs, but Anderson ends the over with a snorter that flies past the outside edge and carries through to Nixon atshoulder height.
Sri Lanka 19/0 (RR: 3.80): Tharanga 7* (19), Jayasuriya 11* (12)
Over 4: Again Mahmood starts the over with a loose delivery, wide of the off stump this time, and this time Jayasuriya smashes it behind point for his second boundary. Jayasuriya gives an indication of the quality of this pitch by defending into the covers and picking up three as the ball races past the infielders. A wide no-ball from Mahmood is carved to third-man for a single, and Mahmood is undoing Anderson's good work in fine style. England's best - perhaps only - chance is to pick up wickets with the new ball, and Mahmood is wasting it at the moment.
Sri Lanka 15/0 (RR: 3.75): Tharanga 3* (13), Jayasuriya 11* (12)
Over 3: Swing and a miss from Tharanga a Anderson probes away outside off stump. Anderson jags one back between bat and pad, and there's a confident appeal for a catch from Paul Nixon, but Billy Bowden is unmoved - rightly it appears judging by the replays. Tharanga does finally get off the mark with a flick to leg for two from the final ball of the over, but it's another top over from Anderson.
Sri Lanka 6/0 (RR: 2.00): Tharanga 2* (12), Jayasuriya 4* (6)
Over 2: Woeful start from Mahmood, a leg-stump half-volley that Jayasuriya almost dismissively flicks to the fine-leg boundary, but he drags the over back well keeping Jayasuriya honest after that first ball.
Sri Lanka 4/0 (RR: 2.00): Tharanga 0* (6), Jayasuriya 4* (6)
Saj Mahmood to share the new ball for England.
Over 1: Good start from Anderson, rapping Tharanga on the pads with one that jags back at the left-hander and taking one away from the bat and beating the outside edge. A maiden over to start proceedings.
Sri Lanka 0/0 (RR: 0.00): Tharanga 0* (6), Jayasuriya 0* (0)
Jimmy Anderson to bowl the first over of the match, with Tharanga on strike.
The England players are out on the field, followed by Sri Lanka's openers Sanath Jayasuriya - who becomes the most-capped player in ODIs today - and Upul Tharanga. It really is a bizarre pitch; it's covered in strange stripes, almost like a zebra's, but is incredibly shiny. It looks like glass and should have some pace and bounce in it.
England skipper Michael Vaughan has won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat on what looks like an absolute belter of a pitch in Antigua. This could be a high-scoring affair, and that has to play into the hands of the infinitely more talented Sri Lankan batting order.
Both sides are unchanged, so Ed Joyce and Ian Bell both retain their places despite the claims of Andrew Strauss. England had a scare this morning when Paul Collingwood woke up with a neck problem, but thankfully he has come through a fitness test and takes his place in the middle-order.
And for Sri Lanka, that means Dilhara Fernando stays in the side with no place for bowling all-rounder Farveez Maharoof.
