Craig McMillan removes Ashwell Prince.

  • Powerplay overs in red.

New Zealand (196 for five) beat South Africa (193 for seven) by five wickets with 1.5 overs remaining.
So... South Africa must beat England in order to make it into the semis. New Zealand are through for sure and Robin Peterson should be put on the first plane home. Good knocks from Styris and Fleming again and a decent showing with the ball from Andre Nel. That's it from us for now. Cheers.

Over 48.2: One ball is all it takes for McCullum as Nel overpitches and the Black Caps 'keeper-batsman sends it rocketing past mid-on for four. Game over. New Zealand through to the semis.
    New Zealand 196/5 (RR: 4.05): McCullum 4* (1), McMillan 38* (55)

Brendon McCullum is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    J Oram 10 (18)

Oram tries to finish it in style, swings across the line, misses and is clean bowled. Oram looked really silly there. Andre Nel is pleased with another bonus wicket. This victory taking a bit longer than anticipated by the New Zealanders.

Over 48: Oram flat-bats a four off the first ball of the over and then steals a single. You'd think McMillan would finish it from there but he doesn't. Four dot balls later and the New Zealanders will take it to the 49th over.
    New Zealand 192/4 (RR: 4.00): Oram 10* (17), McMillan 38* (55)
New Zealand need 2 runs to win from 2 overs at 1.00 runs per over.

    Hall back in the attack.

Over 47: Oram tucks square for two and then creams one smoothly past point for a single. Nel fires in some short stuff (nothing new there) and New Zealand chance their arm with some calculated running between the wickets. New Zealand set for a semi-final berth now, no doubt 'bout that.
    New Zealand 187/4 (RR: 3.97): Oram 5* (15), McMillan 38* (51)
New Zealand need 7 runs to win from 3 overs at 2.33 runs per over.

    Nel back in the attack.

Over 46: Peterson tosses up two rank long-hops which Oram tries to lambaste through the covers. Both times De Villiers dives threw the air and pulls off some outstanding fielding. One single and one leg-bye off the over. McMillan now well into the 30s as his return to prmoinence in the New Zealand set-up, and to think he was well out of the picture a couple of months ago.
    New Zealand 184/4 (RR: 4.00): Oram 2* (10), McMillan 38* (50)
New Zealand need 10 runs to win from 4 overs at 2.50 runs per over.

Over 45: Marginal Makhaya continues as Oram gets off the mark with a two past square-leg. The atmosphere has been wonderful here today... as we get a bit reflective toward the end of this game. Festive times in the Caribbean despite a poor showing from the host team. The end is nigh for SA, the end is nigh.
    New Zealand 182/4 (RR: 4.04): Oram 2* (6), McMillan 37* (48)
New Zealand need 12 runs to win from 5 overs at 2.40 runs per over.

Over 44: Two behind square and then two through mid-wicket as McMillan picks up from where Styris left off. Peterson's over continues as he returns to his fielding position, consolation wicket under the belt and proud as punch.
    New Zealand 180/4 (RR: 4.09): Oram 0* (0), McMillan 37* (48)
New Zealand need 14 runs to win from 6 overs at 2.33 runs per over.

Jacob Oram is the new man in.

    WICKET
    S Styris c Gibbs b Peterson 56 (84)

Styris looking to finish things quickly swings across the line, misses and survives a large shout for lbw. Before that a single for McMillan and then Styris is caught in the deep, perishing in the pursuit. Nice catch for Gibbs, bonus wicket for Peterson but New Zealand still well on their way to victory.

Over 43: Three singles, a wide and another four for Styris. He goes over the top twice, nailing one for four and mis-timing another for a single. Ntini's fruitless World Cup continues. Perhaps the selection of Charl Langeveldt would have been a better option today. Too late to think like that.
    New Zealand 175/3 (RR: 4.06): Styris 56* (81), McMillan 32* (44)
New Zealand need 19 runs to win from 7 overs at 2.71 runs per over.

Over 42: Lame over from Peterson. What is he doing in the side? What is he doing in the squad? Smith spins the ball more than him and can bat a bit too. Styris takes a single and then McMillan pummels him high over wide long-on for a big six. A couple of charity dot balls and then a single for McMillan to hog the strike for the next over.
    New Zealand 167/3 (RR: 3.97): Styris 51* (78), McMillan 30* (42)
New Zealand need 27 runs to win from 8 overs at 3.37 runs per over.

Peterson back in the attack for one last throw of the dice.

Over 41: Six runs off the over, one of them giving Styris his 50, the other going the way of McMillan who also breaks the recent run-rate shackles a bit with a smash through mid-off for four. Will that boundary spell the beginning of the end for SA? Wait and see.
    New Zealand 159/3 (RR: 3.87): Styris 50* (77), McMillan 23* (37)
New Zealand need 35 runs to win from 9 overs at 3.88 runs per over.

S Styris 50: 77 balls, 3 x 4sStyris trots through for one to bring up his 19th ODI 50. It's the third of the World Cup for him to go with his ton against the Windies.

    Ntini back in the attack.

Over 40: Singles, singles, singles - the Black Caps are going to do it one by one. Oh my, if Fleming had stuck around this game would have been over long ago. It's not happening for Nel in this new spell as he is picked off at will around the ground. No 50 for Styirs yet.
    New Zealand 153/3 (RR: 3.84): Styris 49* (75), McMillan 18* (33)
New Zealand need 41 runs to win from 10 overs at 4.10 runs per over.

Over 39: Pollock trundles through for another economical over bringing to a close his stint with the ball roday. Had SA had more to defend, you'd fancy he would have been held back a bit more. Anyway, he's done for the day - one for 30 in 10 overs. Five singles on the trot bring up the NZ 150. Scotty Styris just two away from 50 and building on his venture to end as man-of-the-tournament... no pressure.
    New Zealand 150/3 (RR: 3.83): Styris 48* (72), McMillan 15* (29)
New Zealand need 49 runs to win from 11 overs at 4.02 runs per over.

Over 38: Nel returns with fire and gets straight to that short stuff he seems to love. Five dot balls later Styris gets on top of one and paddles it confidently past square-leg for two. There it is - less than 50 runs to win now. New Zealand milking this for all it is worth and getting a bit of batting practice out in the middle. They really should take this at a canter.
    New Zealand 145/3 (RR: 3.81): Styris 46* (70), McMillan 13* (26)
New Zealand need 49 runs to win from 12 overs at 4.08 runs per over.

Nel back in the attack. It's about time!

Over 37: Three more runs take the required total to nearly under 50. Styris has a few goes in an attempt ot up the run-rate but he's unable to get it right. His timing is still off and really, this has been a rather dogged knock from the all-rounder, somewhat similar to Kallis' knock in the SA innings.
    New Zealand 143/3 (RR: 3.86): Styris 44* (64), McMillan 13* (26)
New Zealand need 51 runs to win from 13 overs at 3.92 runs per over.

Over 36: That's more like it New Zealand! McMillan bangs one through extra cover for four. Leg-byes, more singles and a nicely timed two off the willow of McMillan (still smiling after his three-fer with the ball earlier in the day) end a fruiful over for the imminent winners. Have we spoken too soon? Not likely.
    New Zealand 140/3 (RR: 3.88): Styris 42* (62), McMillan 12* (22)
New Zealand need 54 runs to win from 14 overs at 3.85 runs per over.

Over 35: New Zealand will take this to the last over if they have to. Evidently in no hurry to get done, they play out the over meticulously picking up two more singles. Another wicket and the Black Caps might get a bit stressed. A four would be nice round about now... entertainment value a bit low for now.
    New Zealand 131/3 (RR: 3.74): Styris 41* (60), McMillan 5* (18)
New Zealand need 63 runs to win from 15 overs at 4.20 runs per over.

The ball is dull again and it'll be changed.... and it's changed. On with the game then...

Over 34: Two runs off the over. The runs have dried up somewhat since the departure of Fleming. Hall not really looking like getting a wicket, we reckon SA haul him out of the attack and give Nel another go. Styris now in sight of another career half-ton. No longer the go-to man, Styris in the form of his life and making his permanent spot in the final XI count hugely.
    New Zealand 129/3 (RR: 3.79): Styris 40* (58), McMillan 4* (15)
New Zealand need 65 runs to win from 16 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Over 33: Pollock on the money with his line and length goes for three singles in the over. His pace is varied particularly in this over but it proves fruitless wicket-wise. Run-rate is not an issue, it's wickets South Africa need. Just waiting for McMillan or Styris to make a mistake.
    New Zealand 127/3 (RR: 3.84): Styris 39* (55), McMillan 3* (11)
New Zealand need 67 runs to win from 17 overs at 3.94 runs per over.

    Drinks break.

Over 32: Quiet over. A single each for Styris and McMillan and yes... another wide from Hall. Not good at all, not good at all. Styris survived a good shout for lbw in that over, replays showing a good not-out decision from the umpire.
    New Zealand 124/3 (RR: 3.87): Styris 37* (53), McMillan 2* (7)
New Zealand need 70 runs to win from 18 overs at 3.88 runs per over.

    Hall back in the attack.

Over 31: It's almost a wicket-maiden as McMillan plays out the majority of the remainder of the over and then getting off the mark with a quick scamper for one. Styris sees off the last ball and so ends another successful over for South Africa.
    New Zealand 121/3 (RR: 3.90): Styris 36* (50), McMillan 1* (4)
New Zealand need 73 runs to win from 19 overs at 3.84 runs per over.

Craig McMillan is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    S Fleming c Boucher b Pollock 50 (84)

Instant success for the returning Pollock as Fleming cuts hard and gets the edge. Boucher is standing up to the stumps and holds onto a sharp one, somewhat redeeming himself from his earlier dropped catch. Nice one from Pollock but is it too little too late? Time will tell.

    Pollock back in the attack.

Over 30: The pressure is telling on young Peterson as he goes for a dozen runs in the over including a four through covers off the bat of Fleming and then a lofted boundary over mid-on courtesy of Styris. A trio of singles and a wide for good measure make up a rather atrocious over. New Zealand suddenly a whole lot closer to victory and a berth in the semi-finals.
    New Zealand 120/2 (RR: 4.00): Styris 36* (49), Fleming 50* (83)
New Zealand need 74runs to win from 20 overs at 3.70 runs per over.

S Fleming 50: 83 balls, 6 x 4sThe Black Caps skipper trots through for a single and brings up the 49th half-century of his legendary career.

Over 29: Four singles picked up all around the ground with Kallis unable to find a decent line and length. The last ball of the over sees Fleming move even closer to his half-ton as he lambastes one to the long-on fence for another four.
    New Zealand 108/2 (RR: 3.72): Styris 31* (46), Fleming 44* (80)
New Zealand need 86 runs to win from 21 overs at 4.09 runs per over.

Over 28: Peterson continues and Styris and Fleming nab three singles left, right and centre. Though their appraoch is not forceful, there's a certain air of method to this - silent and professional, doing it slowly and lethally.
    New Zealand 100/2 (RR: 3.57): Styris 29* (43), Fleming 38* (77)
New Zealand need 94 runs to win from 22 overs at 4.27 runs per over.

Over 27: Oh dear! Third dropped catch of the innings. This time it's Gibbs who can't hold onto one at point off the bat of the driving Fleming. Prince, Boucher and Gibbs in need of some catching practice after the match with fieling coach Jonty Rhodes. A single each for Fleming and Styris and no luck for Kallis. Black Caps closing in on their collective ton now.
    New Zealand 97/2 (RR: 3.59): Styris 27* (39), Fleming 37* (75)
New Zealand need 97 runs to win from 23 overs at 4.21 runs per over.

Over 26: Close but no cigar for SA and Peterson as Styris almost offers a return catch - it falls just short of the bowler and the all-rounder lives on. Before that though, Styris drives well through extra-cover for four followed by a brace of singles and another silly wide down the leg-side. Less than 100 runs for a NZ victory now.
    New Zealand 95/2 (RR: 3.65): Styris 26* (38), Fleming 36* (70)
New Zealand need 99 runs to win from 24 overs at 4.12 runs per over.

Over 25: Styris loses a bit of patience and tries to pull one that is a bit too full to do so. The ball skies but lands in no-man's land. Kallis carries on unhassled by that near wicket and NZ pick up one more run. Styris trying hard to get into his groove but struggling with his timing a bit.
    New Zealand 88/2 (RR: 3.52): Styris 21* (33), Fleming 35* (69)
New Zealand need 106 runs to win from 25 overs at 4.24 runs per over.

Over 24: Three singles off the over as the spinner is picked off around the ground. This is where the match hinges, if Peterson comes good and warrants his selection SA might just pull off an unlikely victory. But he'll have to do a whole lot better than he did in that over... a rather average start to his spell.
    New Zealand 85/2 (RR: 3.54): Styris 18* (29), Fleming 35* (67)
New Zealand need 109 runs to win from 26 overs at 4.19 runs per over.

    Peterson finally into the attack.

Over 23: Kallis ambles up to the bowling crease and throws down a couple of dot balls then bowls a rank long-hop. Fleming whips it fine for four... just, some fancy work with his feet from Hall failing to stop the ball... shame, nice effort that. The rest of the over is untheatrical and this game is slipping away from SA one boundary at a time.
    New Zealand 82/2 (RR: 3.56): Styris 16* (27), Fleming 34* (63)
New Zealand need 112 runs to win from 27 overs at 4.14 runs per over.

    Jacques Kallis into the attack.

Over 22: Another wide from SA thanks to Mr Hall. Then Fleming notches up his 8000th ODI run with a 'blinder' through the covers - that was hit hard. Hall offers too much width again and Fleming gives it the sametreatment, this time there's a fielder there - just one run. Styris sees off the last ball, no run. Still no Peterson...shame, it's a bit of charity selection.
    New Zealand 78/2 (RR: 3.54): Styris 16* (27), Fleming 30* (57)
New Zealand need 116 runs to win from 28 overs at 4.14 runs per over.

Over 21: Ouch! Painful over for the bowling team as Nel slips up with a wide and two no-balls and is then picked off for a single each for Fleming and Styris. The last ball of the over Fleming goes on the pull, edges and Boucher spills the catch. He had to jump up and couldn't hang on, the slowness of the pitch almost proving Fleming's downfall. That would have been a goodie wicket, alas not. Too many extras, now two dropped catches. Bad day at the office for Smith and company.
    New Zealand 72/2 (RR: 3.42): Styris 16* (26), Fleming 25* (52)
New Zealand need 122 runs to win from 29 overs at 4.20 runs per over.

Over 20: One single off the over bringing to and end all the powerplays for this encounter. Perhaps now that the restirictions are a thing of the past maybe Smith will look to introduce Peterson... or perhaps himself. Smith and Peterson versus Patel and Vettori - no contest there, the latter winners hands down.
    New Zealand 66/2 (RR: 3.30): Styris 14* (23), Fleming 23* (48)
New Zealand need 128 runs to win from 30 overs at 4.26 runs per over.

Over 19: Styris cracks a cut to the point boundary and Nel is not impressed. One leg-bye makes up the rest of the over as a handful of expansive drives from Fleming go through to the 'keeper without getting anywhere near the bat. One over to go in the powerplays now and the Black Caps certainly haven't taken thorough advantage of the fielding restrictions.
    New Zealand 65/2 (RR: 3.42): Styris 13* (19), Fleming 23* (46)
New Zealand need 129 runs to win from 31 overs at 4.16 runs per over.

Over 18: Tidy stuff from Hall who offers a bit of width with the first ball. Styris obliges and cuts late to third-man for one. No more runs in the over as Fleming shuts up shot and plays out the five dot balls. The game going through the motions a bit with SA still labouring for that third wicket and NZ just going about their run-scoring business.
    New Zealand 60/2 (RR: 3.33): Styris 9* (15), Fleming 23* (44)
New Zealand need 134 runs to win from 32 overs at 4.18 runs per over.

Over 17: Nel continues after the break and is still rattling Styris with some short-pitched stuff. Styris goes on the pull and gets ahold of one, but Prince is in the way of it and spills a tough chance square. The ball deflects off his hands and rolls to just before the ropes, they run three. A single each more and Fleming and Styris take the required total to less than 140 now. Come to think of it, Prince really should have held onto that catch. At this level, if you get two hands to it it should be a done deal.
    New Zealand 59/2 (RR: 3.47): Styris 8* (14), Fleming 23* (39)
New Zealand need 135 runs to win from 33 overs at 4.09 runs per over.

    Drinks break!

Over 16: Indifferent start from Hall who can't decide what line he's wanting to pitch. Anyway, Fleming flicks through mid-wicket for two to bring up his team's collective half-ton and then nails one past point for four. He then prods to mid-on but fails to get a run despite some good timing. Fleming stepping it up a gear in that over. Let it be said, his wicket is key for SA... sooner rather than later.
    New Zealand 54/2 (RR: 3.37): Styris 4* (10), Fleming 22* (37)
New Zealand need 140 runsto win from 34 overs at 4.11 runs per over.

    Andrew Hall into the attack.

Skipper Smith opts to take the third and final powerplay.

Over 15: Nel testing Styris with some short-pitched deliveries. The NZ all-rounder is up to the task and whatches them whizz by his grill. He drives through mid-off and gets two, then facing out the rest of the pacey over with ease. Fleming and Styris labour on slowly but surely, determined to do this for their nation.
    New Zealand 48/2 (RR: 3.20): Styris 4* (10), Fleming 16* (31)
New Zealand need 146 runs to win from 35 overs at 4.17 runs per over.

Over 14: Ntini concedes just two runs off the over with Fleming facing out the entire six balls, flicking one of those through the on-side for the two. Fleming, nowhere near textbook in his technique, but oh so determined. All and sundry waiting in anticipation for the introduction of spinner Robin Peteson... good or bad.
    New Zealand 46/2 (RR: 3.28): Styris 2* (4), Fleming 16* (31)
New Zealand need 148 runs to win from 36 overs at 4.11 runs per over.

Over 13: A near wicket-maiden for Nel as Styris, fresh from his losing ton against Sri Lanka, plays out a trio of dot balls but then gets on the front-foot and plays a rare on-drive for two - not quite timed, so just the two. Nel on fire and raring for more... next over, mate. Just you wait.
    New Zealand 44/2 (RR: 3.38): Styris 2* (4), Fleming 14* (25)
New Zealand need 150 runs to win from 37 overs at 4.05 runs per over.

Scotty Styris is the new batter.

    WICKET
    R Taylor lbw Nel 10 (17)

A dot ball and then Taylor struck on the pads dead in front. He's trapped in his crease, the appeal is lodged and the decision quickly made. Replays show that was probably a bit too high. However, the decision is made and Taylor is on his way back to the hut. Is that a bit of hope now for South Africa? Fleming's still there. His wicket... or lack thereof is key.

Over 12: Just the one off another over from Ntini. Taylor middles through mid-on as the ball is a bit too full for the paceman's liking. Taylor and Fleming looking good, SA desperate for another wicket to add to that of Fulton they nabbed earlier on.
    New Zealand 42/1 (RR: 3.50): Taylor 10* (15), Fleming 14* (25)
New Zealand need 152 runs to win from 38 overs at 4.00 runs per over.

Over 11: Fiery start from Nel. Some short stuff is seen off by Fleming and he and Taylor gather one more single each. We know Nel, he's hot or ice cold - today SA will be hoping he is on fire.
    New Zealand 41/1 (RR: 3.72): Taylor 9* (12), Fleming 14* (22)
New Zealand need 153 runs to win from 39 overs at 3.92 runs per over.

Speedster Andre Nel into the attack.

SA to take the second powerplay.

Over 10: Ntini throws down a near rank half-volley, Fleming is into postion early and sends it rocketing through the covers for another four. One more single to the skipper and Taylor continues on his quiet way, blocking out the remainder of the over. Time for a change in bowling? Maybe.
    New Zealand 39/1 (RR: 3.90): Taylor 8* (11), Fleming 13* (17)
New Zealand need 155 runs to win from 40 overs at 3.87 runs per over.

Over 9: A single off the first ball of the over. Taylor fends around a bit and then... can't bowl there to the young star. Pollock drops short and it's too wide outside the off-stump. Taylor is all over it and middles it straight past point for his first boundary of the day - that was hammered. Pollock tiring a bitperhaps.
    New Zealand 34/1 (RR: 3.77): Taylor 8* (9), Fleming 8* (13)
New Zealand need 160 runs to win from 41 overs at 3.90 runs per over.

Over 8: Taylor gets off the mark with an uppish drive for two through the covers and then gets another two at the end of the over with a tidy square-drive. So ends the successful over for SA. Ntini doing the business, now for Pollock to do the same from hte other end.
    New Zealand 29/1 (RR: 3.62): Taylor 4* (4), Fleming 7* (12)
New Zealand need 165 runs to win from 42 overs at 3.92 runs per over.

Ross Taylor is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    P Fulton c Hall b Ntini 16 (32)

Fulton's blossoming knock ends abruptly as he drives loosely, edging to Hall at second-slip. Poor stroke perhaps. But he looked in an aggressive mood so... live by the sword, die by the sword. Ntini is over the moon with that wicket but there are still nine to go. SA will never win by restricting the New Zealanders, they'll have to bowl them out.

Over 7: Fleming times nicely through mid-wicket. It's just three as the out-field is a touch on the slow side over there. Fulton then gives the strike straight back to Fleming with a quick single after which the NZ skipper blocks out the remainder of the over. Pollock slipping up with a wide again.
    New Zealand 25/0 (RR: 3.57): Fulton 16* (30), Fleming 7* (12)
New Zealand need 169 runs to win from 43 overs at 3.93 runs per over.

Over 6: Fulton gets going as Ntini appears a tad lazy in his approach. Two runs off the over with Fulton pulling well through mid-wicket, high and bouncing just before the ropes. Then Ntini strays down leg again and the tall NZ opener whips it through fine-leg for four more. Fleming watches on as his partner takes the role of senior scorer for now. Fleming happy to play second fiddle.
    New Zealand 20/0 (RR: 3.33): Fulton 15* (29), Fleming 4* (7)
New Zealand need 174 runs to win from 44 overs at 3.95 runs per over.

Over 5: Four runs off the over, all behind square. A single to fine-leg for Fleming, then two to fine-leg for Fulton followed by a cut behind point for one. Conditions a whole lot more ideal for batting now than they were when South Africa were at the crease.
    New Zealand 12/0 (RR: 2.40): Fulton 7* (23), Fleming 4* (7)
New Zealand need 182 runs to win from 45 overs at 4.04 runs per over.

Over 4: Fleming gets a thick edge to third-man for one off the first ball of the over and then Fulton is all defence again for the following five balls. Ntini is getting some good bounce and the wide angle that he delivers from helps to tuck the batsmen up. New Zealand not off to a flyer, just doing things slowly and methodically.
    New Zealand 8/0 (RR: 2.00): Fulton 4* (19), Fleming 3* (5)
New Zealand need 186 runs to win from 46 overs at 4.04 runs per over.

Over 3: Just one run off the over, off the bat of Fleming through the leg-side - good fielding from Prince keeping it to just the one. Truth be told, South Africa would have hoped for at least one wicket by now. NZ chasing just 194 remember. Nice line from Pollock, but he needs to get the batsmen to play at it more.
    New Zealand 7/0 (RR: 2.33): Fulton 4* (14), Fleming 2* (4)
New Zealand need 187 runs to win from 47 overs at 3.97 runs per over.

Over 2: Ntini is a bit too full to start with as Fleming gets off the mark straight away with a nudge to fine-leg for one. Fulton sees off a couple and then drives confidently through the covers for four. Theball just makes it over the ropes. The rest of the over is seen off without any further theatrics as Fulton and Fleming look to lay a solid foundation.
    New Zealand 6/0 (RR: 3.00): Fulton 4* (11), Fleming 1* (1)
New Zealand need 188 runs to win from 48 overs at 3.86 runs per over.

Ntini to share the new ball with Pollock. Nothing new there.

Over 1: Good start from Pollock bar one wide. No runs off the bat as Fulton is all defence to start with. South Africa hopeful that Pollock will get the early breakthrough with New Zealand chasing a rather modest total. Not to be in this over though.
    New Zealand 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Fulton 0* (6), Fleming 0* (0)
New Zealand need 193 runs to win from 49 overs at 3.93 runs per over.

Shaun Pollock doing the new ball duties as usual.

Peter Fulton and Stephen Fleming to open the batting fro the Black Caps.

Alright, time for the chase. Everyone is back on the field and we're good to go.

South Africa: 193 for seven (50 overs)
Australia need 194 to win at 3.89 runs per over

The early losses of Smith and De Villiers really did not help South Africa's cause. Decent knocks from Gibbs and Prince did a bit of a job in the middle-order and some tidy stuff from Hall and Pollock at the end was handy. Will it be enough? Probably not. SA's bowling attack sure are going to have to get their act together. Craig McMillan bagging an unlikely three-fer for the Black Caps, perhaps SA can call on one of their part-timers to do the same (Oh wait, they don't have any part-timers to call on). Grab a bite to eat and get back here for the chase after the break.

Over 50: Peterson gets two past point but it should have just been one to give Pollock the strike. Peterson then misses two in a row, then plays an innovative paddles over short fine-legs' head for four. The last ball is a swing-and-a-miss. Only six runs off the last over of the innings, with Pollock not facing one of those deliveries. Disgraceful. Not even 200.
    South Africa 193/7 (RR: 3.86): Pollock 21* (26), Peterson 8* (8)

Over 49: Patel's spell is done with. And a great one at that. Wicketless but only 36 runs from his allotted 10. South Africa getting the singles but it's boundaries they need, alas those are not flowing... not even trickling. One over to go and just over 200 might be on the cards.
    South Africa 187/7 (RR: 3.81): Pollock 21* (26), Peterson 2* (2)

    Over 48: South Africa 181/7 (RR: 3.77): Pollock 17* (22), Peterson 0* (0)

Robin Peterson is the new man in.

    WICKET
    A Hall c Oram b Bond 17 (17)

A single each for Hall and Pollock and the the former clips over backward-square for a nice four. The next ball though, is not so good for SA. Hall tries to go back over Bond's head. He does, but not enough. Oram takes the catch with those giant hands of his and a short and sweet stint out in the middle is done with.

Bond back in the attack too.

Over 47: Good over for SA. Pollock and Hall go down the ground on several occasions as there are plenty of runs available in the long-on to long-off region. Some good fielding sees them restricted to just five off five balls (economical for this stage of the innings). Then, Pollock goes down on one knee and smashes one over wide mid-wicket for a six. 11 runs off the over and perhaps the spin option was a bad one.
    South Africa 175/6 (RR: 3.72): Pollock 16* (21), Hall 12* (12)

Patel back in the attack - brave decision to use a spinner in these closing overs.

The ball's gone dull, they've changed it now.

Over 46: Another six-run over brings to a close Vettori's stintwith the ball for the day. The spinner varying his pace considerably in that over, flummoxing Hall and Pollock on occasion. The cover sweeper getting a lot of work on the boundary as Hall in particular looks there for his runs. Vettori's final figures closing on one for 50 in 10 - not bad, not great.
    South Africa 164/6 (RR: 3.56): Pollock 5* (17), Hall 12* (10)

Over 45: South Africa only too pleased to get through an over from McMillan without losing a wicket. SA pretty blessed with the calibre of batsman that is Andrew Hall coming in as low down as eight. He's opened the innings before and really needs to pull together all his experience and put together a tidy, quick knock. McMillan picked off for six runs in that over, a good few of them going to the mid-wicket region.
    South Africa 158/6 (RR: 3.51): Pollock 5* (15), Hall 7* (7)

Over 44: Hall gets off the mark with a sweetly time three through mid-wicket. That's it for the over as far as runs are concerned as Pollock fends off some fizzing stuff from veteran Vettori. Boundaries SA... boundaries?
    South Africa 152/6 (RR: 3.45): Pollock 2* (12), Hall 3* (3)

Vettori back in the attack again.

Over 43: Pollock plays out the remaining four balls of the successful over for NZ, no further runs. Hall, watches from the non-striker's end, raring to make an impression with the bat. He's certainly going to need to make an impression with the ball later, so is Pollock.
    South Africa 149/6 (RR: 3.46): Pollock 2* (9), Hall 0* (0)

Andrew Hall is the new batsman out in the middle.

    WICKET
    M Boucher c Fulton b McMillan 16 (21)

Boucher slogs over extra-cover for two and then... another wicket for McMillan who now has a three-fer for the day. Boucher tries to go big over long-on but the tall Peter Fulton is there waiting on the fence. He takes it above his head and the oh so dangerous Boucher has to go. Sa faltering now for sure.

Over 42: Bond well on top of proceedings with SA gathering only three runs from the over. If there were two men you'd back to knock some big runs in these closing overs, it's Boucher and Pollock - both capable of some powerful blows. Fleming has done a trick of note here, using the absolute pace of Bind and the guile and deception of McMillan in tandem.
    South Africa 147/5 (RR: 3.50): Pollock 2* (5), Boucher 14* (19)

Over 41: The batsmen crossed in the air off the ball that took Prince's wicket so Boucher faces up to the last ball of that good over for NZ, taking one more single.
    South Africa 144/5 (RR: 3.51): Pollock 0* (0), Boucher 13* (18)

Shaun Pollock is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    A Prince c Patel b McMillan 37 (57)

McMillan should bowl more often. He has two wickets now as Boucher pulls for two and then him and Prince take a trio of singles around the ground, mostly on the drive. Then Prince drives on the up straight down the throat of Patel waiting gladly at deep-ish mid-off. Silly stroke... somewhat half-hearted and he's sent packing back to the pavilion.

Over 40: Almost a maiden for Bond in his return over but Boucher releases the pressure to a degree with a tidy single off the final delivery of the over. Ten overs to go - not to harbour on... but the time to launch is now, now... now.
    South Africa 138/4 (RR: 3.45): Prince 36* (55), Boucher 8* (14)

Indeed, Bond back into the attack.

Over 39: Three singles off the over and it's evident now that Prince must play the anchor role, bat through the innings and allow big-hitting Boucher to free his arms and wield that willow of his. A wicket and only 4.5 to the over thus far for McMillan - nice stuff from the'all-rounder'.
    South Africa 137/4 (RR: 3.51): Prince 36* (55), Boucher 7* (8)

Over 38: Boucher gets straight to the task at hand and sweeps hard for four. Vettori is then prodded around for two more singles and it's the end of a quick over. Bouch' has hammered some really quick half-tons in recent times and South Africa could very much do with another one today. Surprising that the decision to go after the bowling hasn't come sooner... but surely that time is near. But so is the return of the lethal Bond near.
    South Africa 134/4 (RR: 3.52): Prince 35* (53), Boucher 5* (4)

    Over 37: South Africa 128/4 (RR: 3.45): Prince 34* (51), Boucher 0* (0)

Mark Boucher is the new batsman. And this guy knows how to hit a six. Stick around for the fireworks.

    WICKET
    H Gibbs b McMillan 66 (100)

Prince gets used to the pace of McMillan for a bit and then powers down the ground for a boundary. Two more singles and then McMillan, notorious for breaking partnerships, strikes in his first over as Gibbs cuts hard but gets a thick inside edge which crashes into his stumps. Nice knock from Gibbs, but he should have gone on to a ton hey.

'Medium-pacer' Craig McMillan into the attack.

Over 36: Prince goes over mid-on and they run a quick three. Lazy fielding. Three more singles and the Proteas have gathered 16 runs from the last two overs - perhaps kick starting big runs to come in the next 14 overs to come.
    South Africa 122/3 (RR: 3.38): Prince 29* (48), Gibbs 59* (97)

Over 35: Ouch for the Black Caps! Three wides and two leg-byes preceded by five sharply taken singles hurt the New Zealand cause a bit. Ill-discipline in the field and some questionable delivery selection from Styris aiding the South Africans in that over.
    South Africa 116/3 (RR: 3.31): Prince 25* (45), Gibbs 57* (94)

    Drinks break!

Over 34: Vettori continues and Prince and Gibbs look to the sweep and the drive (some of them rather tentative) at the drop of a hat. Six runs off the over and not the greatest of starts to spectacled Vettori's new over. This blossoming partnership - no mess, no fuss, no frills, no spills - just good value.
    South Africa 106/3 (RR: 3.11): Prince 22* (42), Gibbs 55* (91)

    Vettori back into the attack.

Over 33: Lots of loop and air in that over with South Africa registering their collective ton with just the single off the over. When will the attack come? Sooner rather than later, SA fans will hope.
    South Africa 100/3 (RR: 3.03): Prince 20* (40), Gibbs 51* (87)

Over 32: Another over under the belt for Styris. Just tidy line and length. Nothing dangerous and Gibbs and Prince pick him off, including the one single that takes Gibbs to his aforementioned milestone.
    South Africa 99/3 (RR: 3.09): Prince 20* (37), Gibbs 50* (84)

H Gibbs 50: 84 balls, 2 x 4s, 1 x 6 One more run for Gibbs and that's the 31st half-century of his great ODI career. Remember this is the man that hammered six sixes in the World Cup against Holland in the group stages of the World Cup.

Over 31: Patel picked off for five runs around the ground including a lucky two for Gibbs, sneakily mis-timed through gully. Still not much turn out there but Patel doing a good enough job of keeping the potential boundaries at bay.
    South Africa 95/3 (RR: 3.06): Prince 19* (33), Gibbs 48* (82)

Over 30: Average start from Styris. He's proved handy with the ball this World Cup. And though selected as a batsman really, can be classed as an all-rounder. This over though, no good and Prince and Gibbs continue to prosper... slowly and surely.
    South Africa 89/3 (RR: 2.96): Prince 15* (30), Gibbs 46* (79)

Medium-pacer (only just medium... actually bordering on slow) Scotty Styris is into the attack.

Over 29: Late-cuts and sweeps bring three runs off the over and one reckons it's time for a change in bowling. The combination of Vettori and Patel is getting a bit tiresome for now. Our suggestion - Bond back for a quick blast of an over or two and then the remainder of his overs held back for the end of the innings.
    South Africa 85/3 (RR: 2.93): Prince 14* (29), Gibbs 43* (74)

Over 28: Prince is sick of these defensive strokes and dances down the wicket to Vettori, catching the veteran spinner off guard. He pulls across the line and the ball rockets past mid-on for four. A single to Gibbs, closing on his half-ton slowly but surely, and a wide end off the over. Oh wow! The run-rate is almost at three.
    South Africa 82/3 (RR: 2.92): Prince 13* (28), Gibbs 41* (69)

Over 27: Two goes through mid-wicket for two, he then turns a single around the corner, Prince tickles past short fine-leg for one and then Gibbs ends off the over with another single down the leg-side. Youngster Patel's line erring a bit - not like the rookie spinner, not like him at all.
    South Africa 76/3 (RR: 2.81): Prince 9* (24), Gibbs 40* (67)

Over 26: We're all for playing themselves in but South Africa must step on the gas a bit or they're headed for a rather modest total. Gibbs we, and you, all know is capable of some willow-wielding carnage so should get to it soon. Nothing less than 250 will suffice for SA. For now though, Patel and Vettori are bogging in the batterd down with only a trio of singles coming off this over.
    South Africa 71/3 (RR: 2.73): Prince 8* (22), Gibbs 35* (63)

Over 25: Halfway through the innings with the Black Caps pretty much in the driving seat. But with a fair amount of wickets in hand SA can turn the tables. The sweep shot is most definitely the order of the day and yields two runs off Patel's fourth over of this epic encounter.
    South Africa 68/3 (RR: 2.72): Prince 7* (20), Gibbs 34* (59)

Over 24: Gibbs goes hard on the sweep and the ball races away to the ropes - welcome four that. Prince and Gibbs then unleash all the strokes in the book as they nurdle and prod the ball around the field for four more singles. Nice and easy for the moment.
    South Africa 66/3 (RR: 2.75): Prince 6* (15), Gibbs 33* (58)

Over 23: Quieter over. One run from it. New Zealand needing to break this stand before it really gets going. Gibbs going strong and Prince showing some early confidence. Perhaps and over or two from Bond is a good idea.
    South Africa 58/3 (RR: 2.52): Prince 4* (12), Gibbs 27* (55)

Over 22: Better over for SA as Gibbs defends to the off-side and picks up a single. Prince then gets to some fancy footwork, dancing down the track and hoisting over mid-on for two and then driving out of his crease - it isn't middled but and goes to third-man for another two. Nice stuff from Prince, not going to have these two spinners get the better of him. Showing them who is boss.
    South Africa 57/3 (RR: 2.59): Prince 4* (11), Gibbs 26* (50)

Over 21: Patel cashes in with a maiden as Prince blocks and blocks, initially getting a feel for conditions before embarking on a much-needed half-ton or so for his nation. If the Proteas are to post a good total Gibbs simply must bat through the innings, no questions asked.
    South Africa 52/3 (RR: 2.47): Prince 0* (6), Gibbs 25* (49)

Over 20: The batsman crossed while the ball that brought Kallis' stint out in the middle to an end so Gibbs blocksout the last ball without any further theatrics for the over. Gibbs must now take the lead role, with Prince needing to play himself in foe a couple of overs. Third and final powerplay of the SA innings now over.
    South Africa 52/3 (RR: 2.60): Prince 0* (0), Gibbs 25* (49)

Ashwell Prince is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    K Kallis c Bond b Vettori 22 (54)

Vettori opts to give it less loop and air-time than Patel did in the previous over and darts them in. One single to Gibbs and the the fifth ball of the over brings the wicket. This one is looped up and Kallis backs away and tries to go huge over the long-off fence. It's a failure as it isn't timed and Bond takes the catch off that silly shot out in the deep. Vettori strikes in his first over and so sees the end of a blossoming partnership.

    Indeed, Vettori into the attack.

Over 19: Tidy over from Patel who goes for just a single. Gibbs feeling about and Patel getting a bit of turn and a decent amount of bounce. The sweep shot will soon kick we reckon. That pretty much goes without saying.
    South Africa 51/2 (RR: 2.77): Kallis 22* (52), Gibbs 24* (45)

Jeetan Patel back in the team and now into the attack. Time for a bit of spin. With fellow spinner Vettori's first spell surely just around the corner.

Over 18: Two and then one through mid-wicket with Gibbs growing in confidence and starting to look pretty comfortable out there. Kallis is getting too expansive now and misses a couple of expansive strokes. Oh well, he'll come good down the line again, no doubt.
    South Africa 50/2 (RR: 2.77): Kallis 22* (52), Gibbs 23* (39)

Over 17: Oram continues and is despatched through the cover from Kallis - vintage Kallis that. The giant Black Cap all-rounder is then picked off for four more singles with Kallis backing away off the last ball of the over and trying to lambaste it over covers, he misses and looks rather silly. 'Keeper McCullum standing up to the wicket lately preventing Kallis and Gibbs from using their feet down the track.
    South Africa 47/2 (RR: 2.76): Kallis 22* (48), Gibbs 20* (37)

    Drinks break.

Over 16: Franklin straying in line now and gets picked off down leg by Gibbs for two. The SA fightback continues as they chance it a bit with some tight runs. A near miss nearly sees the end of Kallis and three more singles bring the over's tally to five. NZ would dearly love another wicket to add to that of Smith and De Villiers, not to be for now though.
    South Africa 39/2 (RR: 2.43): Kallis 16* (44), Gibbs 18* (35)

Third and final powerplay will be taken.

Over 15: Oram is nailed over the ropes again. This time it's Gibbs who steps to leg and lambastes a six over mid-wicket. He then takes a quick single to fine-leg leaving Kaliis to face out a couple of dots and then nab a single himself. The last ball of the over yields nothing with the second powerplay coming to an eventful close.
    South Africa 34/2 (RR: 2.26): Kallis 14* (41), Gibbs 15* (32)

Over 14: An indifferent return over from the left-hander as the Kallis and Gibbs bag a trio of singles around the ground and then a wide from Franklin. Kallis will not be bogged down and dances down the wicket and sneaks past backward-pint for two off the last ball of the over. Attacking stuff that.
    South Africa 26/2 (RR: 1.85): Kallis 13* (38), Gibbs 8* (29)

    Franklin back in the attack.

Over 13: Oram delivers four more dot balls and the finally concedes a run. Gibbs goes on the pull but it is badly timed and he trotsthrough for a single anyway. Then, out of the blue, Kallis swings through the line and it's a biggie over long-on. An unexpected six... but welcome nonetheless. That wasn't a bad ball, just very professionally put away.
    South Africa 20/2 (RR: 1.53): Kallis 10* (36), Gibbs 6* (25)

Over 12: SA will take what ever they can get. And they do. It's a leg-bye but that's it for the over as Gibbs can't get Bond away through the in-field. One fancies that Franklin will be back in the attack soon enough to have a go from a new end, with Bond taking a lengthy breather.
    South Africa 13/2 (RR: 1.08): Kallis 4* (35), Gibbs 5* (20)

Over 11: Two maidens on the trot for Oram with Kallis dropping anchor and determined to stick it out through these tough times, regardless of runs accumulated. Oram isn't anyhting to threatning when it comes to speed, but it's that nagging line and length that is getting the better of the batters for the moment.
    South Africa 12/2 (RR: 1.20): Kallis 4* (33), Gibbs 5* (16)

Black Caps will employ the second powerplay.

Over 10: Kallis defends to off-side and gets another single for his efforts. Gibbs then breaks the shackles to an extent as Bond overpitches and crafted through the covers for the first four of the day - great shot selection that. Bond not pleased and fires some extra pacey stuff for the remainder of the over, no further runs. So sees the end of the first powerplay of proceedings.
    South Africa 12/2 (RR: 1.20): Kallis 4* (27), Gibbs 5* (16)

Over 9: Oram kicks off with a maiden. Gibbs, still finding his feet and steadying ship with Kallis, sees a couple go through to the 'keeper, defends with that sound technique of his and is happy to just suss out conditions for now.
    South Africa 7/2 (RR: 0.77): Kallis 3* (24), Gibbs 1* (13)

Oram into the attack sooner than we thought.

Over 8: Yet another one-run over as Gibbs finally gets off the mark. A tap through mid-wicket gets the ball rolling for the talented middle-order batsman and then Kallis fends off the rest of the over, no more runs. Kallis has copped a lot of flack of late for batting too slowly in certain circumstances, but this is exactly what is needed for now. Slow and steady man... easy does it.
    South Africa 7/2 (RR: 0.87): Kallis 3* (24), Gibbs 1* (7)

A bit of rain looming about but theyre going to contiune playing for now. Good good.

Over 7: A maiden over to Franklin as the SA run-rate slips to below one. The bat beaten with a couple of swinging deliveries once again and then Kallis defending a couple, but they barely roll off the square. NZ skipper Stephen Fleming will no doubt look to bowl Franklin and Bond for about seven overs each before bringing on Jacob Oram and company to continue to dry up the runs. Then... the spin combo of Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel to kick in.
    South Africa 6/2 (RR: 0.85): Kallis 3* (20), Gibbs 0* (5)

Over 6: How Kallis didn't manage to get an edge in that over, nobody knows. Bond beat the bat so many times, oh so close each and every time. Kallis visibly perplexed with all the seam movement and Bond wondering what it'll take to get the edge. Anyway, a deflection down to third-man off the final ball gathers one more single.
    South Africa 6/2 (RR: 1.00): Kallis 3* (14), Gibbs 0* (5)

Over 5: Overcast conditions really helping out the New Zealand pacemen as South Africa pick up just one more run. Gibbs not yet off the mark and another single for Kallis, turning the ball to the on-side.One more early wicket and the Black Caps will be over the moon.
    South Africa 5/2 (RR: 1.00): Kallis 2* (8), Gibbs 0* (5)

Over 4: Good over from Bond building on the early pressure. Just one run off the over as Kallis pushes through mid-on. If ever his country need a solid... and big innings from him again, it's this very day.
    South Africa 4/2 (RR: 1.00): Kallis 1* (5), Gibbs 0* (2)

    Over 3: South Africa 3/2 (RR: 1.00): Kallis 0* (1), Gibbs 0* (0)

Herschelle Gibbs is the new batter, with his country in early trouble.

    WICKET
AB De Villiers lbw Franklin 0 (6)

Oh dear! Franklin getting some nice movement through the air and off the track, delivers five solid dot balls to De Villiers and then nips one back nicely which beats the bat and strikes AB on the pad. He's playing forward, but not enough. The appeal is lodged and the decision is out! Perhaps slightly down leg, but a good enough decision. SA in a spot of bother now. Time for their middle-order to produce the goods.

Over 2: Kallis fends off a fiery delivery from Bond, failing to get off the mark. So ends Bond's first successful over of the day... more to come, no doubt.
    South Africa 3/1 (RR: 1.50): Kallis 0* (1), De Villiers 0* (0)

Jacques Kallis is the new man out in the middle.

    WICKET
    G Smith c Oram b Bond 1 (12)

Bond kicks off with a wide, some decent deliveries on line and then over-steps for a no-ball. It's all over the place from the paceman to start with. Smith then gets pretty much a rank half-volley which he fails to middle and the ball spoons to giant Jacob Oram at cover-point. Early breakthrough for the Black Caps and a sad failure from the SA skipper, failing to employ any sort of footwork to that delivery.

Speedster Shane Bond to share the new ball with Franklin.

Over 1: Beautiful start from Franklin who beats the bat on a good few occasions with a mixed bag of slower-balls and away-swingers. Smith finally gets bat on ball once... and then twice as he pushes to mid-on to get off the mark with a single off the last ball of the over. De Villiers, fresh from his ton against the Windies, yet to face a delivery.
    South Africa 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Smith 1* (5), De Villiers 0* (0)

There's a delay to the start as Smith is not happy with the condition of the sight-screen and surrounds. Te groundsmen are sorting it out and.. yes, Smith's happy and we're ready for ball one.

Left-hander James Franklin to take the new ball for the Black Caps.

The awesome combo of AB De Villiers and Graeme Smith to open the batting for SA.

All and sundry are out on the field and we're ready for the action.

One change each for the teams: New Zealand - Spinner Jeetan Patel in for medium-pacer Mark Gillespie. South Africa - Spinner Robin Peterson in for batsman Loots Bosman.

New Zealand: Peter Fulton, Stephen Fleming, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, James Franklin, Shane Bond, Jeetan Patel.

South Africa: Graeme Smith, AB De Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Andrew Hall, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Robin Peterson.

News from out in the middle is that New Zealand have won the toss and opted to bowl first. SA skipper Graeme Smith reckons he would have had a bat anyway.
