  • Powerplay overs in red.

South Africa (157 for one) beat England (154 all out) by nine wickets with 30.4 overs remaining
Possibly the most one-sided game ever played between two Test-playing nations, and England have been an absolute disgrace, frankly. England won the toss but absolutely nothing else as they were outplayed comprehensively in every facet of the game. Hard to see Vaughan and Fletcher surviving this, the most embarrassing in a long list of dismal World Cup failures from England over the years. Changes will have to be made from the top down by England.

Over 19.2: Kallis goes to 9,000 ODI runs with a flick through midwicket for three and Smith ends the game with a thumping straight drive back past Mahmood for four.
    South Africa 157/1 (RR: 8.12): Smith 89* (58), Kallis 17* (25)

Over 19: Smith guides to third-man for a single, and Kallis adds another to deep square-leg. Smith whacks the ball over midwicket for four more, and England's will soon be put out of their misery.
    South Africa 150/1 (RR: 7.89): Smith 85* (57), Kallis 14* (24)
South Africa need 5 runs to win from 31 overs at 0.16 runs per over.

Anderson back into the 'attack', if it can be called that.

Over 18: Kallis gets a single to third-man, and Smith is then caught behind hooking, but it's a no-ball from Mahmood. Sums it up for England that. Nothing of the edge about the next one, smashed over midwicket out of the middle of the bat for another four. Smith backs away and hits to deep point for a single next ball, and Kallis gets another single two balls later and Smith slaps the last ball of the over to deep cover for another.
    South Africa 144/1 (RR: 8.00): Smith 80* (53), Kallis 13* (22)
South Africa need 11 runs to win from 32 overs at 0.34 runs per over.

Over 17: Smith clumps the ball down the ground for four, and then repeats the dose from a Flintoff slower ball. Vaughan keeps the field up, and Smith hammers another four, over extra cover this time. Smith whacks the ball to leg for a single, and Kallis adds another to end the over.
    South Africa 135/1 (RR: 7.94): Smith 74* (49), Kallis 11* (19)
South Africa need 20 runs to win from 33 overs at 0.61 runs per over.

Over 16: Mahmood starts with a dot ball, but that's as good as it gets. Smith is down the track to whack the next ball over midwicket for four and then pulls the ball away for a single. Better than his first two overs, I suppose. But still rubbish.
    South Africa 121/1 (RR: 7.56): Smith 61* (44), Kallis 10* (18)
South Africa need 34 runs to win from 34 overs at 1.00 runs per over.

Vaughan obviously wants to get things finished as quickly as possible; Mahmood is back into the attack.

Drinks. Not long now. The latest and most complete in a seemingly endless list of England one-day embarrassments. A total, total shambles. They haven't even had the ability to make the run chase remotely tricky. Bermuda would have put up a better fight than this.

Over 15: Smith pulls to leg for a single, and that's all South Africa can get from that over. One an over - they're not up with the rate there, ho ho.
    South Africa 116/1 (RR: 7.73): Smith 56* (40), Kallis 10* (16)
South Africa need 39 runs to win from 35 overs at 1.11 runs per over.

Over 14: Smith works to leg for a single to reach a fine half-century. Kallis works to leg for a single, and Smith backs away to drive the next ball through the covers for four more. Smith gets another single from the final ball of Collingwood's over.
    South Africa 115/1 (RR: 8.21): Smith 55* (37), Kallis 10* (13)
South Africa need 40 runs to win from 36 overs at 1.11 runs per over.

    Smith 50: 34 balls, 5 x 4s

Over 13: Smith flicks the ball over midwicket for a single. Kallis gives Flintoff the charge and almost chops a short ball into his stumps, which would have been a strange way to get out. He works the next ball to leg for a single, and Smith adds another from the final ball of Flintoff's over.
    South Africa 108/1 (RR: 8.31): Smith 49* (33), Kallis 9* (11)
South Africa need 47 runs to win from 37 overs at 1.27 runs per over.

    Change of ends for Flintoff.

Over 12: Smith works to leg for a single, and Kallis whips effortlessly through midwicket for another boundary that requires no assistance from Mahmood.
    South Africa 105/1 (RR: 8.75): Smith 47* (31), Kallis 8* (7)
South Africa need 50 runs to win from 38 overs at 1.32 runs per over.

Collingwood into the attack. Not that it really matters who's bowling now.

Over 11: Smith works to leg for two and then cuts hard through point for an easy four. Smith comes down the track and smashes the next ball back over Panesar's head for a one-bounce four. He pushes down the ground for a single next ball, and Kallis gets four thanks to the laziest piece of fielding you'll ever see from Mahmood, jogging alongside the ball for 20 yards before failing to bend down and pick the ball up inside the ropes.
    South Africa 100/1 (RR: 9.09): Smith 46* (30), Kallis 4* (2)
South Africa need 55 runs to win from 39 overs at 1.41 runs per over.

England decide against the second powerplay. Funny that.

Over 10: Kallis blocks the final ball of the over.
    South Africa 85/1 (RR: 8.50): Smith 35* (25), Kallis 0* (1)
South Africa need 70 runs to win from 40 overs at 1.75 runs per over.

Kallis is the new batsman for South Africa.

    WICKET!
    AB de Villiers c Nixon b Flintoff 42 (35)

Smith whips to leg for a single, and de Villiers then gets a brilliant four driving a length ball from Flintoff through the covers. But his luck runs out as an attempted cut comes off the top edge to give Nixon a simple catch, and this time he is given out.

Over 9: Smith sweeps Panesar behind square for four, and he gets another single with a top-edged sweep over slip's head. No luck for England, but they don't deserve any. De Villiers gets four more as Panesar drops short and is put away through point.
    South Africa 80/0 (RR: 8.89): de Villiers 38* (31), Smith 34* (24)
South Africa need 75 runs to win from 41 overs at 1.83 runs per over.

Desperation time for England, and Vaughan turns to Panesar.

Over 8: Smith flays the first ball of Flintoff's over to the third-man fence for four, and gets a single after another wide. Three dot balls from Flintoff, but then a no-ball gives South Africa another run they scarcely need.
    South Africa 71/0 (RR: 8.88): de Villiers 34* (28), Smith 29* (21)
South Africa need 84 runs to win from 42 overs at 2.00 runs per over.

Over 7: De Villiers gets a single and Smith then gets three with a clip behind square on the legside. The next ball is way outside the off stump from Anderson, and de Villiers crashes it through the covers for four. Two more singles complete the over, another one costing double figures.
    South Africa 64/0 (RR: 9.14): de Villiers 34* (23), Smith 24* (19)
South Africa need 91 runs to win from 43 overs at 2.12 runs per over.

Over 6: Smith whacks Flintoff's first ball down the ground for four and then gets a single. Nixon misses one to concede four byes, and de Villiers gets another single so even Freddie can't slow things down here.
    South Africa 54/0 (RR: 9.00): de Villiers 28* (19), Smith 20* (17)
South Africa need 101 runs to win from 44 overs at 2.30 runs per over.

Flintoff is into the attack in place of

Over 5: Anderson manages to bowl two dot balls but then drifts into the pads and de Villiers picks it off for two. The next ball is a wide, and the one after that a long-hop hammered through the covers for four more. The next ball is edged through to Nixon by de Villiers, but Bucknor for some reason decides it's not out. England's job is hard enough without outrageously bad umpiring decisions.
    South Africa 44/0 (RR: 8.80): de Villiers 27* (16), Smith 15* (14)
South Africa need 111 runs to win from 45 overs at 2.47 runs per over.

Over 4: Smith is down the track to Mahmood and drives him hard through the covers for three runs, and de Villiers gets four more with a flashing top edge over the slips. Mahmood drops short again to de Villiers, who smashes through midwicket for another boundary and then gets a single with a nurdle into the legside. Smith gets two more from the final ball of the over, and that should be the end of Mahmood's spell. He can't complain - he's had two overs more than he should have with the new ball.
    South Africa 37/0 (RR: 9.25): de Villiers 21* (10), Smith 15* (14)
South Africa need 118 runs to win from 46 overs at 2.57 runs per over.

Over 3: Smith works to leg for two more but is then beaten by one that bounces more than he expected. Wouldn't have mattered if he had edged it as Nixon fumbles, joining in the general shambles of the England performance. Smith punches down the ground for two and then gets a single to long-leg as Anderson struggles to find any consistency. Anderson swings down a wide outside de Villiers' off stump. England needed a good start with such a woeful total to defend. They haven't got it.
    South Africa 23/0 (RR: 7.67): de Villiers 12* (6), Smith 10* (12)
South Africa need 132 runs to win from 47 overs at 2.81 runs per over.

Over 2: Mahmood starts with a half-volley that de Villiers drives powerfully to mid-off where Vaughan parries the ball. Three runs is the result. Smith gets two with a clip through square-leg and a single to fine-leg. A marked contrast to the pressure applied at the start of England's innings, and Mahmood decides to extend the generosity to a wide long-hop that de Villiers gratefully cuts to the fence for four. Another long-hop from Mahmood is pulled for four more, and any nerves South Africa might have had about this chase have been put to rest in that awful first over for Mahmood.
    South Africa 17/0 (RR: 8.50): de Villiers 12* (5), Smith 5* (7)
South Africa need 138 runs to win from 48 overs at 2.88 runs per over.

Mahmood will share the new ball, which should at least help get the game finished nice and quickly.

Over 1: De Villiers gets a single, and that's bad news for England as he tends to score big if he can just get that first run out of the way. Smith also gets off the mark with a clip to deep square-leg for two runs as Anderson looks for inswing to the left-hander.
    South Africa 3/0 (RR: 3.00): de Villiers 1* (1), Smith 2* (5)
South Africa need 152 runs to win from 49 overs at 3.10 runs per over.

Anderson to bowl the first over for England.

The Englandplayers are in their usual huddle. Wonder what words of wisdom are being exchanged. "Take 10 wickets" should cover it. AB de Villiers and Smith are there to open the batting for South Africa in pursuit of England's meagre total.

England: 154 all out (48 overs)
South Africa need 155 to win at 3.10 runs per over

Awful, awful display from England who have surpassed themselves in somehow managing to find an even worse performance than they've shown so far in the Caribbean. Hall was superb, fully deserving his five-wicket haul, but with the exception of Strauss early in the innings and Bopara late on England were an utter shambles. In fact, the emergence of Bopara is pretty much all England can take from a woeful World Cup. Unless of course South Africa fail to chase down this total. Given their World Cup history, I suppose you can't completely rule that out.

    WICKET!
    JM Anderson lbw b Hall 0 (6)

Bopara takes a single from the fourth ball of Hall's final over, and Anderson is then trapped plumb in front of all three from the final ball of the over. Hall ends with astonishing and well-deserved figures of five for 18 and England are limping out of this tournament.

Over 47: Nel screams in anguish as he fires a wide down the legside, and England get two more extras from a couple of leg-byes as Nel strays down leg again. Bopara smashes the fifth ball of the over through the covers for a classy four, and works the last ball to leg for a single to keep the strike. Good batting from the youngster, not for the first time shaming the efforts of more-experienced players.
    England 153/9 (RR: 3.26): Bopara 26* (40), Anderson 0* (4)

Over 46: Bopara waits until the fifth delivery to take a single. Anderson plays and misses at the final ball of the over, but he does at lest survive. Somehow.
    England 145/9 (RR: 3.15): Bopara 21* (34), Anderson 0* (4)

Hall is back into the attack looking to claim his fifth wicket of the innings. He certainly deserves it.

Over 45: Anderson digs out a yorker first ball and is comprehensively beaten by the next two. Bopara will at least have some more bowling to face. He surely must look for twos and boundaries now.
    England 144/9 (RR: 3.20): Bopara 20* (29), Anderson 0* (3)

Anderson is the last man in for England.

    WICKET!
    MS Panesar c Boucher b Nel 2 (28)

Bopara takes a leg-bye from the second ball of the over to expose Panesar to Nel, who immediately edges through to Boucher. Harsh perhaps to criticise Bopara but he would perhaps have been better off taking the bowling himself. Probably won't face another delivery in this innings now.

Nel is back into the attack.

Over 44: Bopara edges to third-man for a single after blocking three deliveries, and Panesar survives the last two deliveries from Kallis. One an over until the end of the innings appears to be the limit of English ambitions here.
    England 143/8 (RR: 3.25): Bopara 20* (27), Panesar 2* (27)

Over 43: Bopara takes a single from the first ball of the over, and Panesar manages to see out the last five balls despite trying to edge at least three of the five balls he gets from Pollock.
    England 142/8 (RR: 3.30): Bopara 19* (23), Panesar 2* (25)

Over 42: A genuine edge from Bopara flies through a mystifyingly-vacant first-slip region for four welcome runs. A thumping drive from Bopara cannons off the stumps at the non-striker's end for a single. The stumps saved three there, and exposed Panesar to the strike. He survives the over, but can't add to the total.
    England 141/8 (RR: 3.36): Bopara 18* (22), Panesar 2* (20)

Langeveldt is straight out of the attackagain, replaced by Kallis.

Over 41: Panesar works the first ball to leg for a single, which is about the best England could hope for from that delivery. Bopara guides to third-man for another run fom the second ball of the over. Panesar blocks the last four balls fairly stoutly, but England need some runs from somewhere here.
    England 136/8 (RR: 3.32): Bopara 13* (20), Panesar 2* (16)

It won't be Nel bowling at Panesar, it will instead be Pollock.

Over 40: Bopara understandably decides he can't count on Panesar and Jimmy Anderson hanging around for too long, and whacks the first ball from Langeveldt over cover for a welcome boundary and then flicks a legside delivery away for four more. Another classy drive gets Bopara two, and Smith may have just made his first error in judgement by taking Hall out of the attack when he was in such inspired form. Langeveldt does at least end the over with a dot ball to keep Panesar on strike at Nel's end.
    England 134/8 (RR: 3.35): Bopara 12* (19), Panesar 1* (11)

Four for 16 from Hall. Obviously, against a side as bad as England, those figures just won't do, so Hall is out of the attack and replaced by Langeveldt.

Over 39: Panesar is beaten twice in succession, and then edges a no-ball just short of Boucher. Nel bowls a wide to give England another run in an over where Panesar laid bat on ball precisely twice. And one was an edge.
    England 124/8 (RR: 3.18): Bopara 2* (13), Panesar 1* (11)

Nel has played county cricket for both Essex and Northants, so these two England batsmen should at least know a thing or two about facing the wild paceman.

Over 38: Panesar survives the hat-trick ball, cleverly playing and missing at the ball as it shapes away from the left-hander. The same ball produces the same result before Panesar shows some variation with an expansive leave. Panesar gets off the mark with an edged single to third-man. England won't make it to the end of the 40th over, let alone the 50th.
    England 122/8 (RR: 3.21): Bopara 2* (13), Panesar 1* (4)

Monty Panesar is the new batsman to face a hat-trick ball.

    WICKET!
    SI Mahmood b Hall 0 (1)

Embarrassing. It's the same delivery that bowled Flintoff, just tailing back a fraction and beating a wholly useless defensive prod. Five wickets for 11 runs since drinks, and England's ill-deserved semi-final hopes have been dismissed here thanks to their worst performance yet.

Over 37: Bopara, understandably unsure how best to approach this now, blocks out a maiden. To be honest, given the paucity of the batting to come, Ravi may as well have a dart. The last three ain't gonna hang around with him for too long.
    England 121/7 (RR: 3.27): Bopara 2* (12), Mahmood 0* (0)

Over 36: Saj Mahmood is the new batsman. Start-the-car time.
    England 121/7 (RR: 3.36): Bopara 2* (6), Mahmood 0* (0)

    WICKET!
    PA Nixon c Boucher b Hall 1 (2)

England's capitulation continues as Hall gets his second wicket in the over. England were 110-3 at drinks. They've lost four wickets for nowt in four overs since then, and now South Africa are right into the tail.

Paul Nixon is the new batsman, and it's the two near-heroes from the Sri Lanka game who have work to do again.

    WICKET!
    A Flintoff b Hall 5 (10)

Flintoff's ongoing experiment with abandoning foot movement fails again as he is comprehensively bowled by a dead straight delivery from Hall, who is in a real purple patch here.

Over 35: Nel starts with a ludicrously short bouncer that sails high over Flintoff's head and is rightly called wide. England manage to accrue three more singles from the over, but it's horrible to watch.
    England 119/5 (RR: 3.40): Flintoff 5* (9), Bopara 1* (3)

More good captaincy from Smith, bringing Nel back into the attack to have a go at two new batsmen.

Over 34: Bopara lets the last ball of the over go through to the keeper, and 200 noe looks like the absolute limit of England's ambition here.
    England 115/5 (RR: 3.38): Flintoff 3* (5), Bopara 0* (1)

Ravi Bopara is the new batsman for England.

    WICKET!
    PD Collingwood lbw b Hall 30 (57)

Massive wicket for South Africa, and this game looks done and dusted to be honest. Collingwood is trapped on the crease and plumb in front by a ball that keeps a fraction low. It was cruel that the tournament format gave England false hope so late in it, but it is now being extinguished in ruthless style by the South Africa seamers, who are showing the virtue of bowling straight.

Hall is back into the attack in place of Pollock.

Over 33: Flintoff gets off the mark with a single from the final ball of Kallis' over.
    England 112/4 (RR: 3.39): Collingwood 29* (55), Flintoff 1* (2)

    WICKET!
    AJ Strauss c Smith b Kallis 46 (67)

Nelson strikes, and it's great captaincy from Smith, putting himself in at about a fifth slip for Strauss, who promptly carves the ball straight to him. Strauss is perhaps a touch unlucky to pick out the one man there, but it's deserved reward for Kallis. England proving that they don't only struggle against spinners in the middle overs, they're more than capable of shambling things up against seamers as well.

Drinks. England are being pegged back by some fine bowling from the South Africa seamers, but at least they have wickets in hand for a push later in the piece. They'll need at least 220 to have a fighting chance here, but that's a long way off at this stage.

Over 32: Strauss carves the ball to third-man for a single, and Collingwood repeats the shot. Strauss gets one more to deep point, and Collingwood gets a fourth single from the final ball of Pollock's eighth over.
    England 110/3 (RR: 3.44): Strauss 46* (66), Collingwood 28* (52)

Over 31: Collingwood pushes through the covers for a single, and Strauss is then almost bowled behind his legs by Kallis. The crowd want Bucknor to signal wide, but the umpire rightly keeps his arms by his side with that ball passing over the top of leg stump as Strauss goes across his crease. Pressure building on England here who are struggling even to pick up three or four singles an over. Strauss does get one from the fifth ball of the over, but still just two runs from the over. England are notoriously bad at judging what represents a good total, and they look more than capable of making a hash of things here as well.
    England 106/3 (RR: 3.42): Strauss 44* (62), Collingwood 26* (50)

Over 30: Strauss pulls to deep square-leg for a single, and Collingwood adds another flicked into the legside from the final ball to bring up the 50 partnership between these two. Slow and steady, but sorely needed by England who are still up against it here.
    England 104/3 (RR: 3.47): Strauss 43* (58), Collingwood 25* (48)

Pollock is back into the attack after six fine overs with the new ball.

Over 29: Strauss plays out five dot balls from Kallis before getting the final ball of the over through the covers for a single.
    England 102/3 (RR: 3.52): Strauss 42* (57), Collingwood 24* (43)

Over 28: Collingwood drives to deep cover for a single, despite briefly entertaining thoughts of a second. Strauss pushes down the ground for another run, but Kemp spoils a good over by ending it with a leg-stump half-volley that Collingwoodclips over square-leg for a welcome boundary to take England past 100.
    England 101/3 (RR: 3.61): Strauss 41* (51), Collingwood 24* (43)

Over 27: Collingwood gets a single with an edge to third-man, but that's all England can muster from a tidy Kallis over.
    England 95/3 (RR: 3.52): Strauss 40* (49), Collingwood 19* (39)

Over 26: Collingwood drives to long-on for a single, and Strauss gets another with a flowing cover drive that deserved more. A clip to leg earns Collingwood one more, and Strauss gets one more with a drive to long-off. Collingwood gets a fifth single from Kemp's over with a clip to fine-leg.
    England 94/3 (RR: 3.62): Strauss 40* (48), Collingwood 18* (34)

Over 25: Strauss works the ball nicely off his hip for two more, and adds a single from a drive out to deep cover. Collingwood fends the final ball of the over into the lsgside for a quick single.
    England 89/3 (RR: 3.56): Strauss 38* (46), Collingwood 15* (30)

Over 24: Collingwood bunts down the ground for a single before Kemp bowls a bouncer despite the fact Boucher is stood up to the stumps, and it goes away for four byes. Boucher not amused. Strauss cuts hard to third-man's left for two more, and Kemp then bowls a wide outside the off stump with Boucher having gone back now. Strauss flicks the final ball of the over to fine-leg for a single, and that's not the best start from Kemp.
    England 85/3 (RR: 3.54): Strauss 35* (41), Collingwood 14* (29)

Another bowling change, and another right-arm seamer as Justin Kemp comes into the attack. He might have been the bowler England planned to target, but for now they are focused on rebuilding.

Over 23: Strauss works the first ball of Kallis' spell into the legside for a single, and Collingwood gets a lucky single off the glove to third-man from a ball that stayed lower than he expected. The next one bounces more than Strauss expected and flies to third-man for a single. Troubling inconsistent bounce there, and this pitch doesn't look as true as some of the other ones we've seen at this ground. Collingwood gets another single with a thick inside edge into the legside, and Strauss gets two more with a good-looking cut shot behind point. Good first over from Kallis, but it's cost six runs which is a touch unlucky.
    England 76/3 (RR: 3.30): Strauss 32* (37), Collingwood 13* (27)

Jacques Kallis is into the attack for the first time.

Over 22: Hall bowls a fine short ball that takes off and flies past Collingwood's chin and forces Boucher off his feet to grab the ball brilliantly high above his head. It's a fine over from Hall, a maiden, and he's backing up the efforts of the frontline bowlers.
    England 70/3 (RR: 3.18): Strauss 28* (34), Collingwood 11* (24)

Over 21: Nel bangs in a bouncer to Collingwood that is down the legside and eventually signalled wide by Bucknor, not a man who likes to be rushed. Collingwood gets his second boundary of the day, and this one is much better than the first, timing a drive sweetly through extra cover as Nel overpitches. He adds a legside single from the final ball of the over, and that's a decent over for England.
    England 70/3 (RR: 3.33): Strauss 28* (34), Collingwood 11* (18)

Over 20: Strauss works off his hip for a single, and Collingwood gets another with a brilliant shot through midwicket that appears to be heading for the boundary before Kallis makes a fine diving stop. Excellent work from South Africa, who are right up for this game and well on top at this stage.
    England 64/3 (RR: 3.20): Strauss 28* (34), Collingwood 6* (12)

Over 19: Nelbeats Strauss with a beauty from around the wicket, but Strauss gets a single to cover from a no-ball. The extra ball gets four for England, but it's extremely lucky as a fine short ball from Nel flies off the shoulder of Collingwood's bat and just over second slip.
    England 62/3 (RR: 3.26): Strauss 27* (30), Collingwood 5* (10)

Over 18: Big caught-behind appeal against Collingwood, but the ball clearly comes off the pad and Taufel is unamused. Collingwood plays out a maiden over, well bowled by Hall, an often under-rated cricketer.
    England 56/3 (RR: 3.11): Strauss 26* (24), Collingwood 1* (9)

Over 17: Collingwood guides to third-man for a single to get off the mark. Strauss drives the final ball of the over down the ground for a couple, and it's usually a good sign when he starts scoring in that area as well as his favourite areas square of the wicket.
    England 56/3 (RR: 3.29): Strauss 26* (24), Collingwood 1* (3)

Paul Collingwood is the new batsman, and England need to rebuild. He's a good man for the job.

    WICKET!
    KP Pietersen c Smith b Nel 3 (14)

It's the nightmare dismissal for Pietersen, caught by his nemesis Smith off the bowling of Nel. Pietersen looked to drive but could only chip the ball to mid-off where Smith makes good ground and dives forward to take the catch. Huge setback for England who are firmly on the back foot now. On second thoughts, caught Nel bowled Smith might have been worse, but this is up there.

Drinks. Cracking start to the game here. Pollock was superb with the new ball, and that pressure led to Bell playing a brainless shot. Vaughan seemed to be replicating some of his fabled net form before getting an iffy leg-before decision, but the real surprise has been Strauss. He has looked awesome from the moment he came to the crease, gorging on anything short of a length and resembling the player who burst onto the international scene three years ago.

Over 16: The sight of South African bowlers seems to have brough Strauss right back into form here as he smashes another high-class boundary, this time pulled through midwicket. He adds another single to third-man from the next ball, and Pietersen works the final ball of the over through the legside for a single.
    England 53/2 (RR: 3.31): Strauss 24* (23), Pietersen 3* (13)

Smith takes the third and final powerplay.

Over 15: Pietersen works to leg for a single, and Strauss gets two with a neat push through point off the back foot. Nel bowls short and wide to Strauss, and South Africa should know better than anyone that that is not the way to bowl to the left-hander, who smashes a cut shot over point for a cracking boundary. That prompts Nel to come round the wicket, but Strauss is still able to get the ball to third-man for a single. Pietersen defends the final two balls of a poor over from Nel. He bowled a load of rubbish, but still has plenty to say for himself, so no change there.
    England 47/2 (RR: 3.13): Strauss 19* (21), Pietersen 2* (9)

Over 14: Strauss guides to third-man for a single, and Pietersen gets off the mark with a clip to leg. Tidy first over from Hall, just those two singles from it. Such a crucial phase of play here, with England desperately needing a partnership between these two South Africa-born batsmen.
    England 39/2 (RR: 2.79): Strauss 12* (18), Pietersen 1* (6)

Langeveldt is out of the attack, replaced by Andrew Hall.

Over 13: Nel starts with a wicket-maiden. He's got plenty to say to Pietersen, which is far from wise when you're a mediocre fast bowleragainst one of the best batsmen in the world. Try and do your talking with the ball, mate.
    England 37/2 (RR: 2.85): Strauss 11* (14), Pietersen 0* (4)

Kevin Pietersen is the new batsman, and this should be a cracking duel against Nel.

    WICKET!
    MP Vaughan lbw b Nel 17 (38)

Vaughan was just starting to get going, but he's been sawn off by Bucknor, given out lbw to a ball that was angling down the legside.

Fun and games now, as the slow and steady Pollock is replaced by Andre Nel. Who is neither of those things.

Over 12: Strauss is waiting on the short ball from Langeveldt, and smashes a trademark pull shot high over the square-leg boundary for six runs. Strauss gets a thick outside edge that just bounces in front of slip and gets a single. Bizarrely, Simon Taufel signals leg-bye, so it might have been interesting if it had carried to slip, because it was a massive edge from Strauss. Vaughan adds a quick single on the offside, and England are starting to get going now.
    England 37/1 (RR: 3.08): Vaughan 17* (36), Strauss 11* (14)

Over 11: Cracking cut shot from Strauss, but it's straight to Herschelle Gibbs at backward-point. Strauss prevents Pollock getting another maiden by pushing to cover for a single from the final ball of the over.
    England 29/1 (RR: 2.64): Vaughan 16* (34), Strauss 5* (10)

England have had a couple of good overs, but it doesn't put Graeme Smith off taking the second with South Africa still on top here.

Over 10: Strauss pushes to mid-on's left for a well-judged quick single before Vaughan gets a brilliant boundary with a pull shot hammered over midwicket. Vaughan gets an even better boundary with an effortless clip through midwicket that fair races to the fence.
    England 28/1 (RR: 2.80): Vaughan 16* (34), Strauss 4* (4)

Over 9: Strauss is off the mark first ball with a neat flick off his hip for two runs, and adds a single to third-man two balls later. A Pollock no-ball sends the run-rate soaring over two an over. Vaughan survives a concerted leg-before shout from Pollock, getting just outside the line.
    England 19/1 (RR: 2.11): Vaughan 8* (29), Strauss 3* (3)

Over 8: Vaughan gets two with a force through cover off the back foot and then gets a ridiculously lucky boundary, playing the same shot as Bell but getting a fraction less bat on it and helping it over the keeper's head for four. Strauss tries to run himself out from the final ball of the over but fails. Farcical scenes.
    England 15/1 (RR: 1.88): Vaughan 8* (25), Strauss 0* (0)

England's other out-of-form player Andrew Strauss joins his skipper in the middle.

    WICKET!
    IR Bell c Prince b Langeveldt 7 (23)

Brainless from Bell, throwing his wicket away when the bowlers have enough assistance already. He tries to hook a ball from way outside off stump and succeeds only in skying a simple catch to Ashwell Prince at square-leg. Just what England didn't want, and they are in trouble now.

Over 7: Vaughan gets off the mark from his 20th delivery with a pleasing drive through the covers for two runs. Nothing else though from another tight Pollock over.
    England 9/0 (RR: 1.29): Bell 7* (20), Vaughan 2* (22)

Over 6: Bell is again across his stumps and down the track to work through square-leg for two runs. Langeveldt beats the advancing Bell with a ball that flies through to Mark Boucher, before a ball a long way outside the off is allowed to go unpunished by the umpire. Tidy over again from South Africa, but still no breakthrough.
    England 7/0 (RR: 1.17): Bell 7* (20), Vaughan 0* (16)

Over 5: Much better over from Pollock this time, forcing Vaughan to play. The England captain doesn't do it too well either, getting beaten outside the off stump twice. Even Pollock getting some pace and bounce from this surface now.
    England 5/0 (RR: 1.00): Bell 5* (14), Vaughan 0* (16)

Over 4: Bell gets four with a cracking shot through midwicket, advancing down the track to Langeveldt. The final ball of the over is an absolute beauty that beats Bell and clips the off stump but fails to remove the bails. Huge slice of luck for Bell, and rotten luck for the Proteas.
    England 5/0 (RR: 1.25): Bell 5* (14), Vaughan 0* (10)

Over 3: Bell gets England up and running with a single to third-man. The final ball of the over beats Vaughan outside the off stump, and that's the first alarm for England. The run-rate may be very slow, but England won't worry about that at this stage.
    England 1/0 (RR: 0.33): Bell 1* (8), Vaughan 0* (10)

Over 2: Langeveldt also starts with a maiden, but Vaughan doesn't have to play at a single delivery. The figures may look good for Langeveldt, but there was a lot of wasted effort in that over. The new ball is crucial for South Africa here, and so far they're wasting it.
    England 0/0 (RR: 0.00): Bell 0* (6), Vaughan 0* (6)

Charl Langeveldt will share the new ball with Ntini missing today.

Over 1: Bell is immediately looking to get down the track to Pollock, but is forced to defend. Pollock gets some gentle outswing outside the off stump, but Bell is happy to let the ball go through to the keeper where possible. Bell is down the wicket again to defend the final ball of the over. It's a maiden from Pollock, but absolutely no menace. Early wickets will be crucial for South Africa here.
    England 0/0 (RR: 0.00): Bell 0* (6), Vaughan 0* (0)

Shaun Pollock will bowl the first over of the day.

The South African players are out on the field, followed by England openers Vaughan and Ian Bell.

Michael Vaughan has won the toss and chosen to bat first.

Here we go then. After weeks of jostling for position, the Super Eight stage now throws up its first genuine knockout game. This game is in effect a quarter-final, as while an England win won't confirm South Africa's exit, it would leave them relying on a huge West Indies win in the final game. This should be a good one.

Some interesting team news - England are unchanged, but South Africa have left out Makhaya Ntini which is a big surprise on what is the quickest pitch on offer in the tournament.
