commentary: australia v s africa
Tait removes de Villiers.
By Dave Tickner
Australia (153 for three) beat South Africa (149 all out) by seven wickets with 18.3 overs remaining
So both semi-finals go to form, and both have been won at a canter. There's no doubt that the best two teams in this tournament will be meeting in the final, and it promises to be a cracker. South Africa lost this game in the first 10 overs of their innings, completely freezing once again on the big stage.
Over 31.3: Symonds works the ball to deep midwicket for a single as Hall continues. Clarke responds to my childish taunts by backing away and lamping the next ball down the ground for four runs. He then hits a no-ball to deep cover for a single to bring the scores level, and Symonds then whacks the ball through midwicket for four runs to wrap up a comprehensive victory.
Australia 153/3 (RR: 4.86): Clarke 60* (86), Symonds 18* (16)
Over 31: Clarke guides fine of third-man for a hard-run two, and then plays out the rest of Langeveldt's over defensively. Clarke playing for a little red-inker here, perhaps.
Australia 142/3 (RR: 4.58): Clarke 55* (84), Symonds 13* (14)
Australia need 8 runs to win from 19 overs at 0.42 runs per over.
Langeveldt is back into the attack.
Over 30: Symonds works to long-leg for a couple, and gets a single with a top-edged pull shot that almost decapitates Boucher, stood up to Hall. Clarke gets another single to mid-on to end the over.
Australia 140/3 (RR: 4.67): Clarke 53* (78), Symonds 13* (14)
Australia need 10 runs to win from 20 overs at 0.50 runs per over.
Over 29: Clarke thumps Nel back down the ground to reach a quality half-century, but those four runs are the only ones from that over. Great innings though, steering Australia to inevitable victory with runs all round the ground.
Australia 136/3 (RR: 4.69): Clarke 52* (76), Symonds 10* (10)
Australia need 14 runs to win from 21 overs at 0.67 runs per over.
Clarke 50: 75 balls, 7 x 4s
Over 28: Clarke hits down the ground for a quick single. Symonds thumps a drive straight back at Hall, and he can't hold on to the caugh-and-bowled chance. Symonds drives the final ball of the over to the cover boundary as Australia close in on a fourth consecutive World Cup final.
Australia 132/3 (RR: 4.71): Clarke 48* (70), Symonds 10* (10)
Australia need 18 runs to win from 22 overs at 0.82 runs per over.
Over 27: Nel starts with an attempted bouncer, and Symonds is ready for that, rocking back and smacking it through midwicket for four. He hammers the next one to deep cover for a single, and Clarke then flays one over gully for four more when offered a bit of width. Clarke gets a single form the final ball of the over, and the required rate is now one run an over.
Australia 127/3 (RR: 4.70): Clarke 47* (69), Symonds 6* (5)
Australia need 23 runs to win from 23 overs at 1.00 runs per over.
Nel is back into the attack.
Over 26: A couple of singles from the first five balls of Hall's over, and Clarke then ends it in fine style with a wonderful piece of timing and placement to get four through midwicket.
Australia 117/3 (RR: 4.50): Clarke 42* (65), Symonds 1* (3)
Australia need 33 runs to win from 24 overs at 1.38 runs per over.
Hall is back into the attack.
Over 25: Clarke gets a single to deep cover, and Symonds blocks his first ball. Successful over for Pollock, for what it's worth.
Australia 111/3 (RR: 4.44): Clarke 37* (61), Symonds 0* (1)
Australia need 39 runs to win from 25 overs at 1.56 runs per over.
Andrew Symonds is the new man, but he won't be on strike as the betsmen crossed.
WICKET!
ML Hayden c Smith b Pollock 41 (60)
From nowhere, a wicket for South Africa. Hayden decides the time has come to finish the game, and skies Pollock high into the sky, and Smith gets under it to complete the catch, although it seems to have done his dodgy knee few favours.
Over 24: Kemp continues, and Clarke plays off his toes for two to deep square-leg. Clarke keeps the strike with a single from the final ball of the over.
Australia 109/2 (RR: 4.54): Hayden 41* (58), Clarke 35* (57)
Australia need 41 runs to win from 26 overs at 1.58 runs per over.
Over 23: Clarke hits the first ball of Pollock's second spell down the ground for a single, and Hayden does the same next ball. Clarke gets another single from ball four, and the game is drifting further and further away from South Africa. Nothing to lose now, they may as well bring the field up and try to buy a wicket. Hayden clips the last ball of the over through midwicket and runs hard to get back for a second.
Australia 106/2 (RR: 4.61): Hayden 41* (58), Clarke 32* (51)
Australia need 44 runs to win from 27 overs at 1.63 runs per over.
Pollock is back into the attack for South Africa.
Over 22: Clarke works to leg for a single, but Hayden can get nothing from the last four balls. Good stuff from Kemp, mixing his pace up and at least trying to do something different.
Australia 101/2 (RR: 4.59): Hayden 38* (55), Clarke 30* (48)
Australia need 49 runs to win from 28 overs at 1.75 runs per over.
Kemp is into the attack. That's the sixth bowler used by Smith, and the sixth right-arm fast-medium seamer. That's South Africa's problem against top-class opposition; the attack is just so one-dimensional.
Over 21: Clarke hits to mid-on and scurries through for a single, and Hayden then gets a hard-run two after squeezing the ball into the legside. That brings the 100 up, and only 50 more are needed.
Australia 100/2 (RR: 4.76): Hayden 38* (52), Clarke 29* (46)
Australia need 50 runs to win from 29 overs at 1.72 runs per over.
Over 20: Hayden works the ball wide of mid-on for a single. Clarke blocks a few before a punched drive down the ground for four, the ball just beating Kallis drive at mid-off. Clarke gets a single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
Australia 97/2 (RR: 4.85): Hayden 36* (48), Clarke 28* (44)
Australia need 53 runs to win from 30 overs at 1.77 runs per over.
Over 19: Clarke drives nicely through cover for two more and gets the last ball of Hall's over wide of Gibbs for a boundary. Very easy now for Australia.
Australia 91/2 (RR: 4.79): Hayden 35* (47), Clarke 23* (39)
Australia need 59 runs to win from 31 overs at 1.90 runs per over.
Over 18: Hayden drives down the ground for a single, and Clarke gets a single to third-man and Hayden then clubs Langeveldt over mid-on for four. Picked the slower ball there did Hayden.
Australia 85/2 (RR: 4.72):Hayden 35* (47), Clarke 17* (33)
Australia need 65 runs to win from 32 overs at 2.03 runs per over.
Over 17: Clarke works to leg and sprints the first, making the second run a formality. Clarke gets four more with a beautifully timed and perfectly placed clip through midwicket, and again on this outfield that's always four. Boucher up to the stumps, but it doesn't stop Clarke guiding the next ball to third-man for a single. Australia easing past the halfway mark of this chase, and Hayden adds another single with a push to cover.
Australia 79/2 (RR: 4.65): Hayden 30* (42), Clarke 16* (32)
Australia need 71 runs to win from 33 overs at 2.15 runs per over.
Hall into the attack now.
Over 16: Hayden pushes to mid-off for a quick single, and Boucher is now up to the stumps. Clarke drives to deep cover for another run. Just those two singles from Langeveldt's comeback over.
Australia 71/2 (RR: 4.44): Hayden 29* (41), Clarke 9* (27)
Australia need 79 runs to win from 34 overs at 2.32 runs per over.
Langeveldt is back into the attack.
Drinks. Just a question of how quickly Australia get these runs now, and whether South Africa - most likely through Nel - can pick up a couple of wickets to mask the enormous gulf between the sides today.
Over 15: Nel still charging in here, and he completes a maiden over to Clarke. He refuses to give up, despite the apparent hopelessness of the situation.
Australia 69/2 (RR: 4.60): Hayden 28* (38), Clarke 8* (24)
Australia need 81 runs to win from 35 overs at 2.31 runs per over.
Over 14: Clarke works the first ball of Kallis' over to leg for a single, and the next ball flicks Hayden's pads and runs away for four leg-byes. Hayden pushes to mid-off for a single, and Clarke adds another to midwicket. Hayden pulls a no-ball away for another single, and Clarke adds another from the final ball of the over. Expensive one from Kallis, and South Africa can't afford too many of those.
Australia 69/2 (RR: 4.93): Hayden 28* (38), Clarke 8* (18)
Australia need 81 runs to win from 36 overs at 2.25 runs per over.
Over 13: Hayden drives down the ground for a single, and Clarke adds another with a drive into the covers. Tidy over that from Nel, though. Just the two singles from it.
Australia 59/2 (RR: 4.54): Hayden 26* (34), Clarke 5* (15)
Australia need 91 runs to win from 37 overs at 2.46 runs per over.
Over 12: Hayden calls Clarke through for a very dodgy single, and de Villiers' throw misses the stumps by a whisker with Clarke short of his ground. The batsmen get a bonus overthrow, and Hayden then guides to third-man for a single. Clarke plays the rest of Kallis' over defensively, again looking to leave the ball where possible.
Australia 57/2 (RR: 4.75): Hayden 25* (32), Clarke 4* (11)
Australia need 93 runs to win from 38 overs at 2.45 runs per over.
Over 11: Clarke watches a couple go through to Boucher before unfurling a textbook square drive through point for four. Clarke is back in defensive mode for the rest of Nel's over.
Australia 54/2 (RR: 4.91): Hayden 22* (30), Clarke 4* (7)
Australia need 96 runs to win from 39 overs at 2.46 runs per over.
Nel to continue, but no second powerplay.
Over 10: Hayden works to leg for a single, and the next ball comes off Clarke's pads for a leg-bye. Another glorious drive from Hayden gets him four more to take him past 600 runs for the tournament and bring up Australia's 50. Hayden tries to pull the final ball of the over, but for once mistimes it and the ball trickles harmlessly into the legside.
Australia 50/2 (RR: 5.00): Hayden 22* (30), Clarke 0* (1)
Australia need 100 runs to win from 40 overs at 2.50 runs per over.
Over 9: Clarke is the new batsman. Nel's celebration suggests he certainly doesn't think this game's over.
Australia 44/2 (RR: 4.89): Hayden 17* (25), Clarke 0* (0)
Australia need 106 runs to win from 41 overs at 2.59 runs per over.
WICKET!
RT Ponting b Nel 22 (25)
Nel comes round the wicket to Hayden, and Hall makes another good stop at short cover from a well-hit drive. Hayden uses the angle from Nel to work the ball through midwicket for three as the bowler overpitches. Nel then bowls a wide outsidePonting's off stump before getting one through Ponting, who tried to play across the line. Big wicket for South Africa, and Ponting will be disappointed with that shot.
Over 8: Kallis starts his second over with a wide, but beats Hayden with the next ball. A booming drive from Hayden is well-stopped by the man in close at cover, but no-one's stopping the next one, driven nonchalantly through mid-on on the up for an awesome four. The next ball is bunted down the ground for a single. Ponting works the final ball of the over to midwicket but gets nothing for it.
Australia 40/1 (RR: 5.00): Hayden 14* (21), Ponting 22* (23)
Australia need 110 runs to win from 42 overs at 2.62 runs per over.
Over 7: Nel bangs one in to Hayden, who helps it to fine-leg for a single. The next ball is a wide half-volley that Ponting climbs into, driving gloriously through the covers for four. Ponting defends the next ball to cover and scurries through for a single. Hayden pushes wide of Pollock at mid-on for another single, and Ponting defends the final ball of the over.
Australia 34/1 (RR: 4.86): Hayden 9* (16), Ponting 22* (22)
Australia need 116 runs to win from 43 overs at 2.70 runs per over.
Nel into the attack in an early double change from Smith.
Over 6: Kallis starts with a maiden to Ponting who is can't pierce the infield with a series of drives.
Australia 27/1 (RR: 4.50): Hayden 7* (13), Ponting 17* (19)
Australia need 123 runs to win from 44 overs at 2.80 runs per over.
Kallis is into the attack for South Africa.
Over 5: Hayden clips over midwicket, but doesn't get all of it and has to settle for three. Ponting spoils his boundaries-only innings with a single. Hayden thumps the final ball of the over through midwicket for four, and those early Aussie nerves seem to have settled now.
Australia 27/1 (RR: 5.40): Hayden 7* (13), Ponting 17* (13)
Australia need 123 runs to win from 45 overs at 2.73 runs per over.
Over 4: Ponting pulls to midwicket where a diving Prince almost takes a stunning one-handed catch, but can only palm the ball away and it still has enough on it to reach the boundary. Langeveldt then oversteps before another half-tracker is put away for a far more convincing boundary by the Australia captain. Ponting ends the over with another boundary driven down the ground, and he's dealing in boundaries. Three of the four have been awesome shots as well.
Australia 19/1 (RR: 4.75): Hayden 0* (8), Ponting 16* (12)
Australia need 131 runs to win from 46 overs at 2.85 runs per over.
Over 3: Pollock completes a maiden over to Hayden, and the bowlers are at least making this tricky for Australia.
Australia 6/1 (RR: 2.00): Hayden 0* (8), Ponting 4* (5)
Australia need 144 runs to win from 47 overs at 3.06 runs per over.
Over 2: Langeveldt fails to adjust his line to the right-handed Ponting, bowling a wide down the legside. Langeveldt overadjusts the line next ball, and is perhaps lucky not to be wided outside the off stump. Ponting plays watchfully until the final ball of the over, when he unleashes a glorious straight drive that races past the bowler to the boundary.
Australia 6/1 (RR: 3.00): Hayden 0* (2), Ponting 4* (5)
Australia need 144 runs to win from 48 overs at 3.00 runs per over.
Ponting is in early for Australia.

AC Gilchrist b Langeveldt 1 (5)
Langeveldt strikes with his very first ball, swinging the ball through the gate and bowlingGilchrist. South Africa get the early wicket they need, and could we still have a game here...
Langeveldt will share the new ball.
Over 1: Gilchrist defends the first three balls before flicking to fine-leg for a single. Hayden cuts hard at ball five, but picks out the fielder, and then defends ball six. Good start from Pollock.
Australia 1/0 (RR: 1.00): Gilchrist 1* (4), Hayden 0* (2)
Australia need 149 runs to win from 49 overs at 3.04 runs per over.
Pollock to bowl the first over of the innings.
The South Africa fielders are out on the field after lunch. They know they need 10 wickets for victory here, and it looks a very tall order. Not least because it's Hayden and Gilchrist who stride to the wicket to open up for Australia.
South Africa: 149 all out (43.5 overs)
Australia need 150 to win at 3.00 runs per over
South Africa's baffling tactics at the top of the innings meant this eagerly-awaited contest was effectively all over inside 10 overs. Gibbs and Kemp have at least given them a very slim chance with their battling innings, but anything other than a quick, clinical and successful run chase from Hayden, Gilchrist and co. would be a major surprise.
WICKET!
CK Langeveldt b Watson 6 (10)
Kemp swings the ball to deep midwicket but turns down the easy single. He hits the next one down the ground straight to Tait who drops an absolute sitter, not once but twice. The end result is a single, but that was such an easy catch. Two balls later, Langeveldt edges the ball to third-man for four, but is clean bowled by the next one. So Tait's howler cost only five runs. Can't see it mattering too much.
There's a delay in the middle while the ball is changed, as it nearly always is at this stage of the innings.
Over 43: Langeveldt gets a single from the first ball of the over, and that's a bit sloppy from Australia to allow that run. Kemp gets a single with a paddle sweep to short finel-leg, but that was probably straight off the pad. Langeveldt plays out the over, and South Africa stuttering towards 150.
South Africa 144/9 (RR: 3.35): Kemp 48* (89), Langeveldt 2* (7)
Bracken is back into the attack with Tait now bowled out. Gilchrist up to the stumps.
Over 42: Kemp clubs a low full-toss from Watson straight down the ground for four runs, and then adds a single with another firm drive to long-off. Langeveldt carves one over cover-point for a single to get off the mark, and Kemp then smashes a drive through the covers for another boundary. But Kemp can't get the single he wants from the final ball of the over, so Langeveldt will be on strike.
South Africa 142/9 (RR: 3.38): Kemp 47* (88), Langeveldt 1* (2)
Over 41: Kemp ducks a bouncer and drives to mid-off before Tait sticks another wide down the legside. Kemp keeps the strike with a single from the final ball of the over, and Tait's fiery spell is over with his best ODI figures to date.
South Africa 132/9 (RR: 3.22): Kemp 38* (84), Langeveldt 0* (0)
Langeveldt is in at number 11 for South Africa. He needs to hang around for Kemp like Nel did to try and get this score somewhere vaguely respectable. He won't be on strike, as the batsmen crossed.
WICKET!
A Nel c Clarke b Tait 8 (41)
Nel's vigil comes to an end as he carves the ball high into the sky, and Michael Clarke takes a well-judged catch running back from point. Four wickets for Tait, and the chance to get a fifth.
Over 40: Kemp again gets the first ball of the over down the ground for a single, and Australia are happy to let him. The next ball comes off Nel's pads and Kemp calls him through for a leg-bye.A direct hit would have run Nel out, but Kemp is right to try and make something happen here. He must face more of the bowling. He swings the next ball to leg, but can get only a single. The next ball produces another leg-bye. Kemp gets another single from the fifth ball of Watson's over, and Nel pulls the last ball of the over away for another single. Good over for South Africa.
South Africa 130/8 (RR: 3.25): Kemp 37* (79), Nel 8* (40)
Over 39: Kemp is again happy to take a single from the first ball of the over, and again Nel is able to resist everything Tait can throw at him.
South Africa 124/8 (RR: 3.18): Kemp 34* (76), Nel 7* (37)
Over 38: Kemp hits down the ground and is happy to take the single from just the second ball of the over. A mix-up from the next ball ends with both batsmen diving for their ground but no harm done. Nel's being given all manner of advice from the Australians, most of it unrepeatable I dare say. Nel isn't short of a word or two in reply, telling Watson to "bring it on". In amongst the nonsense, Nel is doing a good job for his side here, staying in and ofering some support to Kemp.
South Africa 123/8 (RR: 3.24): Kemp 33* (75), Nel 7* (32)
Watson back into the attack in place of Hogg.
Over 37: Tait bowls a wide outside the off stump, and Kemp gets a single through cover to expose Nel. Nel backs away and misses one before another big wide from the erratic quick. Nel then digs out a yorker, and that clearly causes some pain for Nel and that injured thumb. But he's still out there battling for his side.
South Africa 122/8 (RR: 3.30): Kemp 32* (73), Nel 7* (28)
Tait is back into the attack as Ponting continues to rotate his bowling options.
Over 36: Hogg ends his excellent spell with a maiden over, including one very confident lbw shout against Nel. It was the flipper, but going on to miss off stump. Still, cracking spell, ending with excellent figures of 10-2-24-1.
South Africa 119/8 (RR: 3.31): Kemp 31* (71), Nel 7* (24)
Over 35: Kemp gets a classy four with a wristy cut shot behind point that races across the outfield to the fence. He adds a single with a guide to third-man. Nel swings to leg for anothe boundary and then takes a quick single to mid-off. Ten runs from Watson's over, a rare good one for South Africa today.
South Africa 119/8 (RR: 3.40): Kemp 31* (71), Nel 7* (18)
Watson is back into the attack for Australia.
Over 34: Kemp sweeps hard to leg for a single. Ponting brings long-on up into the circle with Nel on strike, but South Africa's number 10 resists the temptation and plays out the over defensively.
South Africa 109/8 (RR: 3.21): Kemp 26* (67), Nel 2* (16)
Over 33: Kemp has a huge swing at a McGrath slower ball, misses, and is relieved to see the ball bounce up and over the middle stump. Kemp does get a single from the fifth ball orf the over, digging out a yorker to third-man. It leaves Nel one ball to survive, which he does with an exaggerated defensive shot.
South Africa 108/8 (RR: 3.27): Kemp 25* (65), Nel 2* (12)
Over 32: The second ball of Hogg's over comes off Kemp's pads for a leg-bye, and Nel somehow safely negotiates the rest of the over.
South Africa 107/8 (RR: 3.34): Kemp 24* (60), Nel 2* (11)
That's the end of the powerplays. Two wickets and just 13 runs from the last one.
Over 31: Kemp chops to third-man for a single and then jags one back past Nel's inside edge. The next ball beats the bat again. Nel slogs the last ball of the over high into the sky, but manages to find safety and gets two runs for his efforts.
SouthAfrica 106/8 (RR: 3.42): Kemp 24* (58), Nel 2* (7)
McGrath is back into the attack.
Over 30: Nel survives the last two balls of the over, playing at the last one and missing it by a huge margin.
South Africa 103/8 (RR: 3.43): Kemp 23* (57), Nel 0* (2)
The players take drinks at the fall of that wicket as Nel - fractured finger and all - strides to the crease.
WICKET!
SM Pollock c & b Hogg 5 (13)
Pollock creams a boundary through point for four runs, but falls next ball driving half-heartedly and lobbing the ball back down the pitch to the bowler, who takes a simple catch. No batting left in the shed - Andre Nel and Charl Langeveldt to come.
Hogg is back into the attack after a one-over spell from Bracken. That one over was a maiden, so he did little wrong.
Over 29: Tait loses his line, and Kemp is able to help the ball on its way down the legside for four. Another ball down the legside is called wide, but you'll always accept those from Tait when he's picking up wickets and he's done that today.
South Africa 99/7 (RR: 3.41): Kemp 23* (57), Pollock 1* (9)
Over 28: Gilchrist is up to the stumps, and Bracken completes a maiden over to Pollock. Excellent bowling from Australia here, really cranking up the pressure.
South Africa 94/7 (RR: 3.36): Kemp 19* (51), Pollock 1* (9)
Bracken is back into the attack with the powerplay in effect.
Over 27: Pollock is beaten first ball, almost getting an inside edge that would have taken the ball very close to the stumps. There's almost a run-out from the next ball as Pollock calls for a single but is sent back by Kemp. Pollock fends a short ball off his grille for a single, but he got himself in a real tangle there. Kemp defends the final two balls of the over, another fine one from Tait. Had one wicket, could easily have had two.
South Africa 94/7 (RR: 3.48): Kemp 19* (51), Pollock 1* (3)
Shaun Pollock is the new batsman. Can South Africa reach three figures?
WICKET!
AJ Hall c Gilchrist b Tait 3 (8)
The first ball of the powerplay does the trick, Hall trying to get after the bowling but getting only an edge to Gilchrist who takes a good tumbling catch low to his right. Again, the footwork from a South African batsman leaves a lot to be desired.
Ponting now decides to take the final powerplay. Tait to continue.
Over 26: Hall gets a single, allowing Hogg to continue tormenting Kemp. Another play and miss follows, but Kemp then manages to get bat on ball and collects a single. Hall adds another from the final ball of the over.
South Africa 93/6 (RR: 3.58): Kemp 19* (49), Hall 3* (7)
Over 25: Hall clips the ball behind square for what looks a certain two, but good teamwork from Mike Hussey and McGrath - the former sliding to field and then flicking the ball to the latter to throw in - saves a run. Just that single off the over, a good one from Tait.
South Africa 90/6 (RR: 3.60): Kemp 18* (47), Hall 1* (3)
Over 24: Kemp is still having terrible trouble reading the spin from Hogg, but the bowler just loses a bit of control and bowls two wides outside the off stump. Those are the only runs off the over though.
South Africa 89/6 (RR: 3.71): Kemp 18* (43), Hall 0* (1)
Over 23: Hall nicks the final ball of the over, but along the ground to Hayden at first slip.
South Africa 87/6 (RR: 3.78): Kemp 18* (37), Hall 0* (1)
Andrew Hall is the new batsman.

HH Gibbs c Gilchrist b Tait 39 (49)
Gibbs hammers one boundary over point, but Tait strikes shortlyafter as a tentative defensive shot ends Gibbs' stubborn resistance. South Africa right back in the mire, and Tait has done the job his skipper wanted.
Tait is back into the attack. Ponting wants a wicket.
Over 22: Gibbs sweeps fine for a single, and Kemp adds another. Gibbs leaves a wrong 'un before getting another single on the sweep. Kemp gets a single from a genuine outside edge, and he's clearly still not picking it. The next one is called wide down the legside, and Gibbs works to leg for a single from the final ball of the over.
South Africa 83/5 (RR: 3.77): Gibbs 35* (44), Kemp 18* (37)
Over 21: Watson beats Kemp with one that just holds its line outside the off stump. Watson tries the bouncer, but Kemp is more than equal to it, hooking the ball high over square-leg for six to bring up the 50 partnership between these two batsmen.
South Africa 77/5 (RR: 3.67): Gibbs 32* (40), Kemp 16* (35)
Over 20: Gibbs shovels the first ball of the over into the legside for a single. Kemp is again beaten by the wrong 'un before getting a quick single from a thick inside edge to leg. Gibbs is then beaten by another wrong 'un, and Hogg has started his spell well here.
South Africa 71/5 (RR: 3.55): Gibbs 32* (40), Kemp 10* (29)
Over 19: Kemp ducks under a good bouncer from Watson, and then chops to third-man for a couple. He defends the rest of the over, a good one from the Aussie all-rounder.
South Africa 69/5 (RR: 3.63): Gibbs 31* (38), Kemp 9* (25)
Over 18: Kemp gets two and a single from sweeps paddled into the legside, and then Gibbs works to leg for one more. Kemp drives a full-toss from Hogg to deep cover for a single to keep the strike. At least there's some fight in this partnership.
South Africa 67/5 (RR: 3.72): Gibbs 31* (38), Kemp 7* (19)
Over 17: Clever batting from Gibbs, placing a pull shot behind square and collecting four. Both batsmen get a single before the over ends, and the rebuilding continues.
South Africa 62/5 (RR: 3.65): Gibbs 30* (37), Kemp 3* (14)
Shane Watson is into the attack.
Over 16: Gibbs sweeps for a single, and Kemp then becomes the latest player to be bamboozled by the Hogg wrong 'un, lunging at the ball and finding only thin air. Excellent start from Hogg.
South Africa 56/5 (RR: 3.50): Gibbs 25* (32), Kemp 2* (13)
No third powerplay which is interesting. Brad Hogg is into the attack. Another key moment in this match.
Drinks. The most worrying thing for South Africa is the fact a score of 55-5 represents a recovery. Had Bucknor detected Gibbs' inside edge off Tait, then the Proteas might be all out by now. Australia have been superb, but Smith, Kallis and Prince all played appalling shots to give assistance the Aussies scarcely needed.
Over 15: Wonderful shot from Gibbs, clipping the ball through square-leg for four runs. He adds another single as Tait again strays on leg stump, and Kemp blocks the last ball of the over.
South Africa 55/5 (RR: 3.67): Gibbs 24* (30), Kemp 2* (9)
Over 14: Three singles from the first four balls take South Africa to 50. Ironic cheers greet the milestone, and Kemp blocks the last two balls. You feel if South Africa are going to have any impact in this match, this partnership has to do the bulk of the remaining work.
South Africa 50/5 (RR: 3.57): Gibbs 19* (25), Kemp 2* (8)
Bracken is back into the attack.
Over 13: Kemp again inconvenienced by a short ball, but gets off strike with a leg-bye. Gibbs is clearly determined to get after Tait here, and a flashing drive comes off theoutside edge and flies over the slips for four. Gibbs guides a slower ball from Tait to third-man for a single. Tait loses one way down the legside, and Gilchrist has no chance of cutting that off. Five wides, gladly received by South Africa.
South Africa 47/5 (RR: 3.62): Gibbs 17* (22), Kemp 1* (5)
Over 12: Kemp awkwardly fends a short ball from McGrath into the legside for a single to get off the mark. Gibbs plays out the over in determined defence.
South Africa 36/5 (RR: 3.00): Gibbs 12* (19), Kemp 1* (2)
Over 11: All happening here. The first ball of Tait's second over comes back sharply at Gibbs, flicks the inside edge and Gilchrist completes the catch. Australia jubilant, but Steve Bucknor is unmoved. The next ball flies off the outside edge to third-man for four, and the third ball of the over is classically driven through the covers for four more. Thrilling stuff, and a life for Gibbs.
South Africa 35/5 (RR: 3.18): Gibbs 12* (14), Kemp 0* (1)
Australia take the second powerplay. No surprise there.
Over 10: Kemp courageously leaves the hat-trick ball, and it passes just wide of the off stump. Great stuff from McGrath.
South Africa 27/5 (RR: 2.70): Gibbs 4* (8), Kemp 0* (1)
Justin Kemp is the new batsman, facing a hat-trick ball.
WICKET!
MV Boucher c Hayden b McGrath 0 (1)
McGrath on a hat-trick! Classic McGrath dismissal, just shaping the ball away from the right-hander, finding the edge. Simple catch for Hayden at first slip. South Africa in total disarray.
Mark Boucher is the new batsman.
WICKET!
AG Prince c Gilchrist b McGrath 0 (2)
The choke is on in full force. Gibbs gets a single before Prince ludicrously chases after an incredibly wide ball from McGrath, and somehow manages to get the toe of the bat to the ball and give Gilchrist more catching practice. Would definitely have been a wide if he'd left it.
Over 9: Prince blocks the final ball of the over. Tait in microcosm in that over - a rank bad ball that disappears for four, and a wicket-taking delivery a few balls later.
South Africa 26/3 (RR: 2.89): Gibbs 3* (5), Prince 0* (1)
Ashwell Prince is the new batsman.
WICKET!
AB de Villiers c Gilchrist b Tait 15 (34)
Tait starts with a bouncer, but de Villiers is expecting that and rocks back to pull dismissively through midwicket for four. Tait gets his revenge just a few balls later though, as a flat-footed drive from de Villiers succeeds only in nicking a simple catch to Gilchrist. Could be an early finish here.
Tait is into the attack now in place of Bracken.
Over 8: Five dot balls force de Villiers to do something, and he comes down the track and gets a thick edge to third-man for a single. He could so easily have followed Smith and Kallis. Great bowling from McGrath.
South Africa 22/2 (RR: 2.75): de Villiers 11* (29), Gibbs 3* (5)
Over 7: Gibbs slashes the ball to third-man for a single, and de Villiers adds another to mid-on, but a direct hit would have left him short of his ground. Two more singles follow, in rather safer style, but it's another tidy over from Bracken.
South Africa 21/2 (RR: 3.00): de Villiers 10* (23), Gibbs 3* (5)
Over 6: Gibbs gets off the mark with a single before McGrath tries the short one. De Villiers is on it in a flash, pulling through midwicket for four.
South Africa 17/2 (RR: 2.83): de Villiers 8* (20), Gibbs 1* (2)
Herschelle Gibbs is the new batsman, and there's work to do here.
WICKET!
JHKallis b McGrath 5 (9)
Kallis comes down the track and drives on the up through the covers for four. But Kallis then tries to repeat the shot and backs away too far, yorks himself and is bowled. Big trouble for South Africa now, and two key batsmen have given their wickets away.
Over 5: Kallis gets off the mark with a drive to third-man off the outside half of the bat. De Villiers is on the defensive for the rest of the over, and again the pressure buils on the Proteas.
South Africa 8/1 (RR: 1.60): de Villiers 4* (19), Kallis 1* (6)
Over 4: De Villiers watchfully plays out a maiden over, looking to let the ball go whenever possible. Fine start this from Australia, giving nothing away.
South Africa 7/1 (RR: 1.75): de Villiers 4* (16), Kallis 0* (3)
Over 3: Kallis plays tentatively at his first ball outside off stump and misses. He lets the next one go through to Adam Gilchrist and solidly blocks the final ball of the over.
South Africa 7/1 (RR: 2.33): de Villiers 4* (10), Kallis 0* (3)
Jacques Kallis is the new batsman for South Africa, with exactly 9000 ODI runs behind him.
WICKET!
GC Smith b Bracken 2 (5)
Huge wicket for Australia, terrible shot from Smith. He's down the track looking to smash the ball out of the park. He misses, and is comprehensively bowled.
Over 2: Smith shovels to leg for a single. McGrath then gets some swing but it's way outside the off stump. He then gets one to come back at de Villiers and thud into the pads. There's a huge and very confident leg-before shout, but Aleem Dar shakes his head. Desperately close that one. It had a lot more going for it than a few that were given yesterday. Excellent first over from McGrath, and nervy times for de Villiers.
South Africa 7/0 (RR: 3.50): Smith 2* (2), de Villiers 4* (10)
Glenn McGrath to share the new ball, so Shaun Tait has to wait for his chance.
Over 1: Smith gets a thick outside edge to third-man to get off the mark first ball. De Villiers defends four inswingers from Bracken before getting four with an outside edge just wide of slip and fine of the third-man fielder. This outfield is like glass, the ball racing to the fence there.
South Africa 5/0 (RR: 5.00): Smith 1* (1), de Villiers 4* (5)
Nathan Bracken to bowl the first over of the day.
Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers follow the South Africa players onto the field. South Africa will be looking for a fast start here.
South Africa have won the toss and chosen to bat first in this second World Cup semi-final. Sri Lanka await the winners in Barbados on Saturday.
Both sides name unchanged sides as they attempted to claim the victory which would earn them a place in Saturday's World Cup final.
Reigning champions Australia were so confident in their line-up they named it on Tuesday having kept faith with the side who hammered New Zealand in their final Super Eight match in Grenada.
South Africa were considering bringing in spinner Robin Peterson to give them greater bowling options, but instead chose to name the same side that claimed a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over England to seal their place in the last four.
