commentary: england v canada

  • Powerplay overs in red.

England (279/6) beat Canada (228/7) by 51 runs.
Efficent is probably the best way to describe this performance by England. Some decent batting from Collingwood, Joyce, Vaughan and those cameos from Bopara and Nixon was not really backed up with the bowling, which was steady without being very threatening.
They may be a little worried about the apparent inability to pick up any wickets in the middle portion of the innings when the ball has lost some shine and hardness, but before the batsmen really chase hard. Still, job done, and on to Kenya.

Over 50: Collingwood tries a bouncer at the helmetless Codrington, who swipes and misses. He tries again, but that time Codrington helps it round the corner for four off the back of his bat. Next ball is helped round the corner for a single, then Chumney hits down the ground for a single, and England have won by 51 runs.

    WICKET!
    A Bagai c Pietersen b Plunkett 6 (10)
Bagai rocks back to the first ball of the over and tries an uppercut to the third man boundary. Unfortuantely for him he seemed to forget that there was a third man there, who takes an easy catch.

Over 5: Bagai plays a great back foot push through the covers for a boundary off Anderson. Anderson pitches the next few up to Bagai, who is solidly behind them all. Bagai then carves one down to third man for a single.

Canada need 263 runs to win from 46 overs at 5.72 runs per over.

    WICKET!
    G Barnett b Plunkett 7 (7)

Plunkett starts off with a wide half-volley that Barnett creams to the ropes for four. Next up he bowls a leg-stump yorker that was sliding just down leg-side. Then Barnett shoulders arms to one that ducks back in and clips the top of off-stump. Eventful start.

Liam Plunkett will take the new ball from the other end.

Over 1: Anderson gets some away swing first up, then Davison gets a leg-bye. Barnett then welts an uncontrolled pull that just clears Pietersen at straight mid-wicket. Anderson then appeals loudly for lbw but it pitched outside the left-hander's off-stump. Barnett gets a single to mid-wicket.
    Canada 4/0 (RR: 4.00): Davison 0* (2), Barnett 3* (4)
Canada need 276 runs to win from 49 overs at 5.63 runs per over.

John Davison and Geoff Barnett will open the innings for Canada.

The players are on their way out onto the field for Canada's reply.

    England: 279/6(50 overs)
Canada need 280 to win at 5.60 runs per over

In the end, a pretty good knock from England on an unhelpful pitch. Joyce and Bell were ticking along very nicely until a customary middle-order collapse, but a cracking 62 from Collingwood and excellent cameos from Bopara and Nixon have set a very testing target for the Canadians.

Over 50: Collingwood getsanother full toss from Cummins, and thrashes it towards the boundary, and it gets there after another misfield. They then take a very rapid two to long-on, then another rapid pair to deep mid-wicket. Collingwood then plays into the leg-side, but they have to settle for a single that time. Nixon then clips one over short fine-leg for another four, then clubs over straight mid-wicket for six.
    England 279/5 (RR: 5.58): Collingwood 62 (48), Nixon 23 (8)

Over 49: Collingwood works a single to square leg, then Nixon shows how to play the reverse sweep, fairly belting it to third man for four. He then dances down the pitch and clubs it down the ground for another boundary. He survives a hopeful lbw shout, then misses a big heave aiming for the leg-side ropes. Nixon closes the over with another wonderful reverse sweep for four.
    England 260/5 (RR: 5.31): Collingwood 53 (44), Nixon 13 (6)

Over 48: Nixon is off the mark straight away with a leg glance single, then Collingwood pushes a single into the covers off the last ball of the over.
    England 247/5 (RR: 5.15): Collingwood 52 (43), Nixon 1 (1)

Paul Nixon is the new batsman.

    WICKET!
    J Dalrymple c Bagai b Cummins 2 (4)

Collinwood takes a single after some sharp work in the covers from Bhatti denies a boundary. Dalrymple then takes a couple down to long-on, then tries a premeditated paddle, but changes his mind when the ball is too far to the off-side and attempts to guide it down to third man. However, he only succeeds in nicking through to Bagai behind the stumps.

Over 47: Dalrymple blocks the one remaining ball of the over.
    England 242/4 (RR: 5.15): Collingwood 50 (41), Dalrymple 0 (1)

Jamie Dalrymple is the new batsman.

    WICKET!
    R Bopara b Codrington 29 (30)

Collingwood works one to long-on, and the speed of the batsmen is such that they take two. Collingwood repeats the shot but the fielding is slightly sharper this time and they settle for one. Bopara then reverse sweeps for one, then Collingwood nicks a single to mid-wicket with more rapid running. Bopara then tries another reverse sweep, but gets it badly wrong and it takes out his off-stump.

Over 46: Collingwood - clearly tired of this singles lark - hoiks one over mid-wicket for four, then helps a waist-high no-ball over the fine-leg ropes for six. That was Samad's last warning for waist high balls, and he's been ordered out of the attack by the umpires. Bhatti will finish the over, but Collingwood sweeps his first ball for four. Collingwood then drives a very wide one into the covers, but they take three after a misfield. MP Vaughan c Davison b Samad 45 (64)

Vaughan rocks back and cracks thefirst ball of the final powerplay over to the cover boundary for four. He then gets another two with a beautifully placed gentle dab through the covers. Canada will take the third and final powerplay.

Over 15: Joyce takes a quick single from Davison, then Vaughan sweeps down to fine-leg for another. Joyce tries a big heave over mid-wicket but doesn't get hold of it and it dribbles to mid-wicket. Joyce takes a single from the last ball of a tidy over.

Over 14: Vaughan pushes the first ball of Bhatti's latest over to Codrington for a single, then Joyce pushes one through the covers for another single. Over 11: Vaughan rocks back to Davison's second ball and caresses it through straight mid-wicket for a boundary, then plays out the rest of the over pretty carefully.

Over 9: Cummins continues, remarkably, and is on target from his first couple to Vaughan. He then chucks in a decent yorker at Vaughan's toes, then returns to form by serving up a nice wide long-hop, that Vaughan cracks to the point boundary. Vaughan clips the next ball to fine leg for a single, before Cummins bowls another no-ball to Joyce, then another slightly harsh leg-side wide.

Over 8: Vaughan tucks a single into the on-side from the start of Bhatti's fourth over, then Joyce blocks out and leaves the rest of the over.
    England 47/0 (RR: 5.88): Joyce 23* (32), Vaughan 12* (18)

Over 7: Cummins offers another wide from the first ball of the next over, and surely this will be his last for now. Joyce then gently pushes through the offside for what should have been two, but George Codrington makes a terrible hash of the fielding and takes it over the ropes for four. Joyce repeats the shot, but Codrington does rather better this time and they take two.
    England 46/0 (RR: 6.57): Joyce 23* (27), Vaughan 11* (17)

Over 6: Vaughan edges one that exposes the lack of pace in the pitch/bowling by dropping a few feet in front of the slips. Vaughan then steps down the pitch and flicks through the on-side for his first four of the day. From the last ball, Bhatti pitches one right up that Vaughan cracks straight past the bowler for another four.
    England 39/0 (RR: 6.50): Joyce 17* (21), Vaughan 11* (17)

Over 5: Cummins starts with another legside wide, this one perhaps a little harsh as it only just went over the line of leg-stump. Next ball is a good nip-backer that Joyce just inside edges onto his pads. Joyce watches another couple, before Cummins serves up another wide on the off-side. Joyce then chases another wide one and square drives to the cover boundary for four, despite a dive from Geoff Barnett. He repeats exactly the same shot next ball, but this one was right out of the middle of the bat and raced to the ropes.
    England 31/0 (RR: 6.20): Joyce 17* (21), Vaughan 3* (11)

Over 4: Vaughan takes a good quick single from the first ball of Bhatti's second over, Joyce then watches the next couple before being beaten outside the off-stump. He then pushes the final ball of the over through the covers for three.

Over 3: Cummins is in again, and Joyce neatly clips the first of the over through straight mid-wicket for four. Joyce watches the next couple carefully, then what would have been a close leg before shout is halted by a no-ball call. Joyce flashes and misses at another no-ball, and Cummins is clearly having run-up problems, having aborted his approach twice before in the over. Cummins then bowls a widish one that Joyce leaves alone, but it nutmegs keeper Asish Bagai and goes for four byes.
    England 17/0 (RR: 5.67): Joyce 6* (10), Vaughan 2* (10)

Over 2: Joyce guides the first to third man for a single, then Vaughan is beaten twice outside the off-stump. Vaughan then uses his feet to the next couple, getting two down to fine leg at the second attempt.
    England 7/0 (RR: 3.50): Joyce 2* (2), Vaughan 2* (10)

Umar Bhatti will open from the other end for Canada.

Over 1: Cummins starts with a big leg side wide, then Joyce tucks the first legitimate ball to square leg for a single. Vaughan is solidly forward to his first couple, leaves the next well alone, then the next two are off-side wides. Cummins then beats the outside edge with a jaffa that seamed away from middle stump.
    England 4/0 (RR: 4.00): Joyce 1* (1), Vaughan 0* (5)

Anderson Cummins will open the bowling for Canada.

Ed Joyce and Michael Vaughan are on their way out to the middle, and some cricket is actually about to start after all this talk of pedalos.

Two changes to the Canada side - Henry Osinde and Qaiser Ali are out, with Austin Codrington and Desmond Chumney replacing them.

Anyway, England are otherwise unchanged from the New Zealand game, Ed Joyce keeping his place as opener, Liam Plunkett and Jimmy Anderson will take the new ball.

Interestingly, Nasser Hussain has just let slip that Flintoff was warned no less than four times during the Ashes tour over similar incidents. Odd that he has just thought to mention this now, but the latest incident was clearly the final straw for Duncan Fletcher and the England management.

Ravi Bopara comes in for Flintoff, who apparently (according to the News of the World) was caught commandeering a pedalo in the early hours of yesterday morning. Silly boy.

Canada have won the toss and will bowl first, but the big news from St Lucia is that Andrew Flintoff has been dropped from the England side after a 'breach of team discipline'.
