  • Powerplay overs in red.

South Africa (212 for nine) beat Sri Lanka (209 all out) by one wicket with 10 balls remaining
Wow! What a match! The clash of the tournament thus far for sure. Half-tons for Dilshan, Arnold, Smith and Kallis. A five-fer for Langeveldt and four wickets in four balls for Lasith Malinga. The match had it all. In the end though, there could be only one winner. And it was of course South Africa. SA did their best to lose but pulled off the one-wicket win in the end. It's a victory yes, but it should have been a lot more impressive.

Over 48.2: SA win! Finally! They almost threw it away. Peterson plays and misses and then edges for four through the vacant third-slip area.
    South Africa 212/9 (RR: 4.38): Peterson 4* (8), Langeveldt 1* (9)

    Malinga to continue.

Over 48: Langeveldt proves his mettle with the willow and plays out a maiden over to Vaas. It is so tight right now.
    South Africa 208/9 (RR: 4.33): Peterson 0* (6), Langeveldt 1* (9)
South Africa need 2 runs to win from 2 overs at 1.00 runs per over.

    Vaas to continue.

Over 47: A mis-field and SA should really have taken two to tie the scores but they only take one. This is really tight now and the tension is intense. ODI cricket at its best. Malinga so nearly wins it for Sri Lanka off the last ball of the over but the edge is just missed.
    South Africa 208/9 (RR: 4.42): Peterson 0* (6), Langeveldt 1* (3)
South Africa need 2 runs to win from 3 overs at 0.66 runs per over.

Charl Langevledt is the last man in for SA.

    M Ntini b Malinga 0 (1)

Four wickets in four balls for Malinga! The first time in the history of one-day international cricket. Mtini clean bowled by an inswinging yorker. History in the making and SA choking again.

Makhaya Ntini is the next man in.

    WICKET
    J Kallis c Sangakkara b Malinga 86 (110)

Hat-trick! Kallis drives and edges. Lasith Malinga records the sixth hat-trick in the history of World Cup cricket and once again, let it be said, South Africa making the situation really tough on themselves.

    Malinga to continue...on a hat-trick.

Over 46: Vaas is stroked through the covers for a single to Kallis and then Peterson plays out the last five balls - five dots. He survives to hopeful appeals for lbw. South Africa taking ridiculously long to win this game now.
    South Africa 207/7 (RR: 4.50): Peterson 0* (5), Kallis 86* (109)
South Africa need 3 runs to win from 4 overs at 0.75 runs per over.

Over 45: Finally! A bit of aggression! Pollock goes over the top of cover for three - no four thanks to some good out-fielding from Malinga. Kallis gets another single and the rest of the over is made up of standard defensive strokes for no runs. 10 runs to win.
    South Africa 206/7 (RR: 4.57): Peterson 0* (0), Kallis 85* (108)
South Africa need 4 runs to win from 5 overs at 0.80 runs per over.

Robin Peterson is the new batsman in now.

    WICKET
    A Hall c Tharanga b Malinga 0 (1)

Hall scoops another slower ball from Malinga straight to Tharanga in the covers. Gone for a first-baller and the SA batters determined to make this win difficult.

Andrew Hall is the next man in for SA.

    WICKET
    S Pollock b Malinga 13 (24)

Pollock takes advantage of the field restrictions and clips one through mid-wicket for four. He then edges past the 'keeper for two. Malinga gets a bonus wicket as Pollock plays down the wrong line to a slower ball and is clean bowled. He kept Kallis company but now has to go. Just four runs to win now.

    Third and final powerplay introduced.

Over 44: Finally! A bit of aggression! Pollock goes over the top of cover for three - no four thanks to some good out-fielding from Malinga. Kallis gets another single and the rest of the over is made up of standard defensive strokes for no runs. 10 runs to win.
    South Africa 200/5 (RR: 4.54): Pollock 7* (19), Kallis 85* (108)
South Africa need 10 runs to win from 6 overs at 1.66 runs per over.

Vaas back in the attack for one last throw of the dice.

Over 43: Murali's spell comes to an end. SA pick up three more runs. Murali ends with figures of three for 34 in his allotted 10 overs. Great stuff that. Kallis running out of required runs to get his ton with.
    South Africa 196/5 (RR: 4.55): Pollock 4* (17), Kallis 84* (104)
South Africa need 14 runs to win from 7 overs at 2.00 runs per over.

Murali starts his final over of the match.

Over 42: Jayasuriya races through another over off which South Africa takes three more runs. They're doing it slowly but surely, the Proteas are.
    South Africa 193/5 (RR: 4.59): Pollock 3* (14), Kallis 82* (102)
South Africa need 17 runs to win from 8 overs at 2.12 runs per over.

Over 41: Three singles and a wide off the over. SA need only 20 off a whole bunch of deliveries but the pressure out there is huge. Should SA win this game they will be so very close to a semi-final spot already due to the fact that they face Ireland and Bangladesh next - games which they surely will triumph in.
    South Africa 190/5 (RR: 4.63): Pollock 2* (11), Kallis 80* (98)
South Africa need 20 runs to win from 9 overs at 2.22 runs per over.

Murali back in the attack. Here's where the match will go either way.

Over 40: Pollock gets off the mark and Kallis battles through the cramp to collect two more singles in the deep. Sri Lanka should bring in the field and dry up the runs a bit.
    South Africa 186/5 (RR: 4.65): Pollock 1* (7), Kallis 78* (96)
South Africa need 24 runs to win from 10 overs at 2.40 runs per over.

Over 39: Malinga puts down a difficult low return catch from Kallis on the drive and Pollock fails to get off the mark just yet. Only one run off the over as SA go through a bit of a nervous period. Kallis is really cramping up now.
    South Africa 182/5 (RR: 4.69): Pollock 0* (3), Kallis 76* (94)
South Africa need 27 runs to win from 11 overs at 2.45 runs per over.

    Over 38:
    South Africa 182/5 (RR: 4.78): Pollock 0* (0), Kallis 75* (91)
South Africa need 28 runs to win from 12 overs at 2.33 runs per over.

Shaun Pollock is the new batsman.

    WICKET
    J Kemp st Sangakkara b Jayasuriya 5 (16)

Sangakkara bags his 50th ODI stumping as Kemp's foot is in the air upon the off-whipping of the bails. The out-of-form big-hitter heads back to the hut. Cheers mate. Surely Sri Lanka cannot pull off a win here.

Over 37: Kemp and Kallis get a single each. And then finally a boundary for SA (even if it is leg-byes). Malinga fires in a yorker which nails Kemp on the foot and rockets down to the fine-leg fence for four. Hooray for SA. Sri Lanka need to bring Murali back into the attack as soon as possible.
    South Africa 177/4 (RR: 4.78): Kemp 4* (13), Kallis 71* (88)
South Africa need 33 runs to win from 13 overs at 2.53 runs per over.

Over 36: Jayasuriya's little 'darter's proving handy here for Sri Lanka. SA get just two more runs and the question begs to be asked actually. Why has Jaya' never been quite considered as an all-rounder?
    South Africa 171/4 (RR: 4.75): Kemp 3* (9), Kallis 70* (86)
South Africa need 39 runs to win from 14 overs at 2.78 runs per over.

Over 35: Fiery over of note from Malinga. Kemp and Kallis fend off some short stuff and gather three singles for their efforts. Malinga can be pleased with that over after getting a bit of tap in his earlier spells. Among the short stuff, he also pops in a couple of hectic yorkers.
    South Africa 169/4 (RR: 4.82): Kemp 2* (5), Kallis 69* (84)
South Africa need 41 runs to win from 15 overs at 2.73 runs per over.

Fourth spell lucky? Perhaps. Lasith 'Bad Day' Malinga back in the attack.

    Drinks break!

Over 34: A wide! Have not seen one of those in a while. Then a slash to third-man of the bat of Kallis followed by a quick single. The Sri Lankans have a bit of hope now, and are once again loud out there in the field. SA must keep calm. It's still their game.
    South Africa 166/4 (RR: 4.88): Kemp 1* (2), Kallis 67* (81)
South Africa need 44 runs to win from 16 overs at 2.75 runs per over.

    Jayasuriya to continue.

Over 33: Kemp survives the hat-trick ball...but only just. An appeal for caught at bat-pad getting turned down. He gets off the mark with a single and then Kallis plays out the rest of the double-strike over.
    South Africa 162/4 (RR: 4.90): Kemp 1* (2), Kallis 64* (75)
South Africa need 48 runs to win from 17 overs at 2.82 runs per over.

Justin Kemp is the new batsman out in the middle.

    WICKET
    M Boucher lbw Muralitharan 0 (1)

Oh dear! panic time perhaps for SA. Boucher gets a first-baller as Murali sends down a quicker one. Bouch' is struck on the pads dead in front and is on his way back to the pavilion.

Mark Boucher is the new batsman. This guy knows how to end a match quickly. Six time? maybe.

    WICKET
    H Gibbs c and b Muralitharan 31 (51)

Murali strikes with the first ball of the over as Gibbs does not pick the 'doosra' and hits a low return catch to the spin legend.

Over 32: Just 50 runs needed to win now for SA. Kallis seems to be taking a bit of strain out there. It is really hot but he must stick it out and bat until the end. Gibbs quietly goes about his business gathering the singles.
    South Africa 160/2 (RR: 5.00): Gibbs 31* (50), Kallis 63* (73)
South Africa need 50 runs to win from 18 overs at 2.77 runs per over.

Jayasuriya back for his third spell of the day.

Over 31: Murali unable to strike in his return over, though he does beat the bat on occasion. Kallis really looking good out there and SA will be pleased with his time out in the middle. They'll need him to fire more often in the rest of the World Cup if they hope to make it to the final.
    South Africa 157/2 (RR: 5.06): Gibbs 29* (46), Kallis 62* (71)
South Africa need 53 runs to win from 19 overs at 2.78 runs per over.

Murali back in the attack - change of ends for the spin wizard.

Over 30: Three singles off the over as the introduction of Dilshan really is not working. Time for a change again. Come on! Bring back Chaminda Vaas.
    South Africa 153/2 (RR: 5.10): Gibbs 27* (43), Kallis 60* (68)
South Africa need 57 runs to win from 20 overs at 2.85 runs per over.

Over 29: Gibbs plays a couple of uppish strokes but gets away with it has the field is heavily dropped back -hence all the singles Maharoof changes his length a bit and tries out the shorter stuff but to no avail. Stranger things have happened, but really this should be an easy win for SA.
    South Africa 150/2 (RR: 5.17): Gibbs 26* (39), Kallis 58* (66)
South Africa need 60 runs to win from 21 overs at 2.85 runs per over.

Over 28: Singles, singles, singles, singles. Seriously - Sri Lanka need to stemthe flow of singles. Six more to the total as the required rate reaches very tiny proportions. The over also sees the arrival of the 50 partnership, one which included just two fours.
    South Africa 147/2 (RR: 5.25): Gibbs 24* (35), Kallis 57* (64)
South Africa need 63 runs to win from 22 overs at 2.86 runs per over.

    Tillekeratne Dilshan into the attack.

Over 27: Maharoof's return over goes for six runs with very little effort from Kallis and Gibbs. A couple of drives on the front foot and little flicks through the leg-side, as these two seem to be taking the match away from their opponents at a canter.
    South Africa 141/2 (RR: 5.22): Gibbs 22* (33), Kallis 53* (60)
South Africa need 69 runs to win from 23 overs at 3.00 runs per over.

Maharoof back in the attack now.

Over 26: Murali stems the flow of runs as Kallis sneaks a single leaving the Gibbs to play out the rest of the over, failing to penetrate the in-field.
    South Africa 135/2 (RR: 5.19): Gibbs 19* (30), Kallis 51* (57)
South Africa need 75 runs to win from 24 overs at 3.12 runs per over.

Over 25: We might as well call this The Single Show as that is very much all that's happening for now. Gibbs and Kallis just collecting the ones left, right and centre and employing the sweep shot with great effect.
    South Africa 134/2 (RR: 5.36): Gibbs 19* (26), Kallis 50* (55)
South Africa need 76 runs to win from 25 overs at 3.04 runs per over.

Kallis 50: 55 balls, 4 x 4s South Africa's best all-rounder goes to yet another career half-ton. There's still time for him to get to a ton.

Over 24: The last ball of the over sees Kallis pick the 'doosra' and rock onto the back foot to hammer it through extra cover for a welcome boundary. Kallis proving all his critics wrong for now. Four other singles before that as Gibbs and Jacques continue to impress in this solid third-wicket stand.
    South Africa 130/2 (RR: 5.41): Gibbs 19* (24), Kallis 48* (51)
South Africa need 80 runs to win from 26 overs at 3.07 runs per over.

Over 23: Four singles off the over as Jayasuriya is picked off at will. Maheal Jayawardene needs a wicket, and a wicket quick, from his attack. Perhaps bringing Chaminda Vaas back into the attack would not be a bad idea. But for now their hopes rest on the magincian that is Muttiah Muralitharan.
    South Africa 122/2 (RR: 5.30): Gibbs 17* (22), Kallis 42* (47)
South Africa need 88 runs to win from 27 overs at 3.25 runs per over.

Jayasuriya back in the attack again. Malinga out...again.

Over 22: An edge off the last ball of the over through the slip area brings a lucky three runs for SA. Before that Murali gets the better of Kallis and Gibbs as he changes his angle of attack and tucks the batters up. Kallis now nearing his half-ton.
    South Africa 118/2 (RR: 5.36): Gibbs 15* (18), Kallis 40* (45)
South Africa need 92 runs to win from 28 overs at 3.28 runs per over.

Over 21: Malinga's expensive ways continue as Kallis puts a nice half-volley away for two and then gets a single. A full-toss is creamed to the mong-on ropes by Gibbs and a drop-and-run on the on-side ends the untidy over.
    South Africa 113/2 (RR: 5.38): Gibbs 11* (14), Kallis 39* (43)
South Africa need 97 runs to win from 29 overs at 3.34 runs per over.

Malinga back in the attack again for his third spell of the day. He has only bowled three overs thus far and has been rather expensive.

Over 20: Gibbs settles in as he square-cuts for two. Murali tosses a couple up a bit but Gibbs and Kallis are up for the task and gather singlesaround the ground. The require-rate is tiny. It's all about not losing wickets for South Africa at the moment.
    South Africa 105/2 (RR: 5.25): Gibbs 6* (10), Kallis 36* (41)
South Africa need 105 runs to win from 30 overs at 3.50 runs per over.

Over 19: Kallis and Gibbs happy to do it in singles for now collect two more each as a bit of ship-steadying sets in after the loss of South Africa. Another wicket now will certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons.
    South Africa 101/2 (RR: 5.31): Gibbs 3* (6), Kallis 35* (39)
South Africa need 109 runs to win from 31 overs at 3.51 runs per over.

Over 18: Gibbs failing to read the guile of Murali from the get-go but gets off the mark with a shakey single. Kallis plays out the rest of Sri Lanka's successful over, geting another single off the last ball.
    South Africa 97/2 (RR: 5.38): Gibbs 1* (2), Kallis 33* (37)
South Africa need 113 runs to win from 32 overs at 3.53 runs per over.

Herschelle Gibbs is the new batter for SA.

    WICKET
    G Smith st Sangakkara b Muralitharan 59 (65)

Kallis turns a single to mid-wicket and then Smith's stint out in the middle comes to and end as Murali strikes. Smith drives, lunges forward, misses and is out of his crease. 'Keeper Sangakkara whips off the bails and the SA captain is on his way.

Over 17: Jayasuriya starts off well as Smith and Kallis can barely get him off the square. They manage just two singles and it will be a good thing for Sri Lanka if Murali and Jaya' can bowl in tandem and restrict the SA top-order a bit.
    South Africa 94/1 (RR: 5.75): Smith 58* (59), Kallis 30* (33)
South Africa need 118 runs to win from 33 overs at 3.47 runs per over.

Sanath Jayasuriya into the attack too now.

    Time for a drinks break!

Over 16: Five runs off Murali's first over as SA get straight to the sweep shot. There are a couple of half-hearted shouts for lbw but nothing convincing enough. Kallis and Smith steal some singles on the leg-side and will really want to see off Murali's first spell without getting out.
    South Africa 92/1 (RR: 5.75): Smith 58* (59), Kallis 30* (33)
South Africa need 118 runs to win from 34 overs at 3.47 runs per over.

Muttiah Muralitharan is into the attack.

Sri Lanka will not take the third and final powerplay just yet.

Over 15: Smith smashes one off the back foot past the bowler - a boundary which brings up his 50. Another whip off the legs brings him another four. He digs out a yorker and then takes a single as Kallis gets two more two third-man thanks to a thick edge.
    South Africa 87/1 (RR: 5.42): Smith 55* (53), Kallis 30* (33)
South Africa need 123 runs to win from 35 overs at 3.72 runs per over.

Smith 50: 50 balls, 6 x 4s, 1 x 6 South Africa's skipper, in the form of his life, goes to another career half-ton and he really is leading from the front these days.

    Malinga back in the attack.

Over 14: Smith is in great form and bags a two to third-man and then tickles one to fine-leg for another two. A quick scamper through for a single gives the Kallis the strike allowing him to bang the last ball of the over through the covers for another boundary. Maharoof coming in for a bit of stick now.
    South Africa 76/1 (RR: 5.42): Smith 46* (48), Kallis 28* (32)
South Africa need 134 runs to win from 36 overs at 3.72 runs per over.

Over 13: Kallis bags another single down to third-man off the first ball of the over after which Smith plays out a couple and then bangs the ball back over Chaminda's headfor the first six of the innings - and the first six of the match - and the first six ever at this ground. It's a new international venue remember.
    South Africa 67/1 (RR: 5.15): Smith 41* (44), Kallis 24* (30)
South Africa need 144 runs to win from 37 overs at 3.86 runs per over.

Vaas, still in the attack, kicks off his seventh over.

Over 12: It really ain't a wise thing bowling on the leg-side to Smith. But Maharoof insists and gets lambasted for another four and a couple of singles. Kallis too picks up another single. The running is getting better now after a few early scares. SA's run-rate now nearly five and the required rate now under four.
    South Africa 59/1 (RR: 4.91): Smith 34* (39), Kallis 23* (29)
South Africa need 151 runs to win from 38 overs at 3.97 runs per over.

Over 11: Smith sure is looking to unsettle Vaas as he is dancing all around his crease. From leg to off and back to leg again. After a few mis-hits and a couple of single he eventually middles on through wide mid-on for a boundary. Kallis continues on his merry way just farming the strike to his skipper.
    South Africa 52/1 (RR: 4.72): Smith 29* (37), Kallis 21* (25)
South Africa need 158 runs to win from 39 overs at 4.05 runs per over.

It's time for the second powerplay.

Over 10: Kallis tucks into a square-drive for four and then he and Smith seem determined to run each other out as they take near suicidal runs to mid-on and then mid-off. Luckily for them the fielders miss both times. Smith powers away through square-leg for just a single.
    South Africa 46/1 (RR: 4.60): Smith 24* (32), Kallis 20* (24)
South Africa need 164 runs to win from 40 overs at 4.10 runs per over.

Over 9: Vaas, as usual, proving the most difficult bowler to get away for runs. Smith and Kallis scrape together a few bonus singles as the fielders have a bit of an 'off' over. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene won't be wanting to see that given the fact that Sri Lanka are only defending 210.
    South Africa 38/1 (RR: 4.22): Smith 22* (30), Kallis 14* (20)
South Africa need 172 runs to win from 41 overs at 4.19 runs per over.

Over 8: Kallis is nearly caught by Chamara Silva in the covers but the ball falls just short. Kallis then lays out a couple of dots and the creams a beautiful on-drive past the bowler for four runs. Another drive does not beat the field and the batsmen take a quick single for Kallis to keep the strike for the next over. This is a much-needed stand for SA after the early loss of AB De Villiers.
    South Africa 35/1 (RR: 4.37): Smith 20* (27), Kallis 13* (17)
South Africa need 175 runs to win from 42 overs at 4.16 runs per over.

Over 7: Good over from veteran Vaas as SA pick up just two more runs. Smith failing to penetrate the infield but he and Kallis do manage another quick single each for their admirable efforts.
    South Africa 30/1 (RR: 4.28): Smith 20* (27), Kallis 8* (11)
South Africa need 180 runs to win from 43 overs at 4.18 runs per over.

Over 6: Tidy start for Maharoof as Smith and Kallis pick him off for three singles around the ground including a nice little tuck to fine-leg off the last ball of the over off the bat of the SA skipper. Smith drinking a lot of water so as to avoid cramping up again like he did against the Aussies.
    South Africa 28/1 (RR: 4.16): Smith 19* (22), Kallis 7* (10)
South Africa need 182 runs to win from 44 overs at 4.13 runs per over.

    Farveez Maharoof is into theattack.

Over 5: Kallis very intent on using his feet comes down the track on a couple of occasions and picks off Vaas for two, twice down the ground. 'Keeper Mumar Sangakkara decides to stand up to the stumps, keeping Kallis in his crease. It proves the right thing as Kallis plays out the rest of the over. He sure is looking confident though after the past day's criticism in the media for his poor strike-rate.
    South Africa 25/1 (RR: 5.00): Smith 17* (17), Kallis 6* (9)
South Africa need 185 runs to win from 45 overs at 4.11 runs per over.

Over 4: Fruitful over for South Africa as Malinga bowls a wide and a no-ball. Smith cashes in on some poor length, whipping two boundaries on the trot through the square-leg/fine-leg area. He then drives straight for two as well as missing two attempted drives. No edges off those attempted drives - thankfully for SA.
    South Africa 21/1 (RR: 5.25): Smith 17* (17), Kallis 2* (3)
South Africa need 189 runs to win from 46 overs at 4.10 runs per over.

Over 3: Kallis plays out a dot ball and then gets off the mark with a tickle down to third-man. Smith fends off a couple of fierce deliveries and then grabs a quick run through to fine-leg off the last ball of the over and keeps the strike.
    South Africa 7/1 (RR: 2.33): Smith 6* (11), Kallis 1* (2)
South Africa need 203 runs to win from 47 overs at 4.31 runs per over.

Over 2: Smith whips the ball through square-leg for his first four and then plays out five dot balls. Malinga is on the money with his line straight away and causes the SA skipper some troubles on the back foot shots.
    South Africa 5/1 (RR: 2.50): Smith 5* (7), Kallis 0* (0)
South Africa need 205 runs to win from 48 overs at 4.27 runs per over.

Lasith Malinga to share the new ball with Vaas.

    Over 1:
    South Africa 1/1 (RR: 1.00): Smith 1* (1), Kallis 0* (0)
South Africa need 209 runs to win from 49 overs at 4.26 runs per over.

Jacques Kallis is the new batter.

    WICKET
    AB De Villiers b Vaas 0 (5)

Ouch! Early breakthrough for Sri Lanka as Vaas bowls a peach of delivery which castles the opener's stumps. Before that though, Smith gets off the mark straight away with a single down to third-man allowing AB to face out four dot balls before falling. Again, ouch for South Africa.

Chaminda Vaas to take the new ball.

AB De Villiers and Graeme Smith to open the batting for South Africa.

Time for the South African chase...
