commentary: windies v south africa

Picture

De Villiers on his way to 146.

South Africa (356 for four) beat West Indies (289 for nine) by 67 runs.
That's the end of the road for the Windies at the World Cup - bar some really twisted results in the forthcoming Super Eight clashes... and a miracle.

Over 50: 10 runs off the over! Powell failing to reach his half-ton thanks to some poor running between the wicket. Collymore finishes off the day's proceedings with a big six over long-on. Oh... and two wides from Smith. You've got to love the theatrics of it all.
West Indies 289/9 (RR: 5.78): Powell 48* (36), Collymore 12* (12)

Over 49: Three singles and a wide off the over. Powell needs the strike if he is to get that deserved half-ton. Collymore unable to farm the strike to his hopeful partner.
West Indies 279/9 (RR: 5.69): Powell 46* (32), Collymore 5* (10)
West Indies need 78 runs to win from 1 over at 78.00 runs per over.

Over 48: 17 runs off the over! Smith bowls some more pies and Powell goes over cow-corner twice in two balls for two giant sixes. He then edges past the 'keeper and gathers two more before taking a single. Collymore prods and they take two to some lazy fielding. Nice entertainment, thanks gents. Powell might be up for a 50 here... any consolation? No.
West Indies 275/9 (RR: 5.72): Powell 44* (30), Collymore 4* (6)
West Indies need 82 runs to win from 2 overs at 41.00 runs per over.

Over 47: 33 runs an over needed now... haha, that ain't going to happen. South Africa should have wrapped thus up long ago but Powell and Collymore battle on.
West Indies 258/9 (RR: 5.48): Powell 29* (26), Collymore 2* (4)
West Indies need 99 runs to win from 3 overs at 33.00 runs per over.

Over 46: Collymore off the mark and a couple of dot balls faced out by Powell end off Smith's over. The second time today he has entered the attack and struck instantly.
West Indies 256/9 (RR: 5.56): Powell 28* (22), Collymore 1* (2)
West Indies need 101 runs to win from 4 overs at 25.25 runs per over.

Corey Collymore is the last man in.

I Bradshaw c Hall b Smith 20 (45)

Smith back in the attack.

Over 45: Ugly over from Hall as he is driven in front of mid-wicket for four by Powell. He bowls a wide, errs in line, errs in length and is taken for nine runs in that over. Powell and Bradshaw impressing with the willow in hand more and more.
West Indies 253/8 (RR: 5.62): Powell 26* (19), Bradshaw 20* (44)
West Indies need 104 runs to win from 5 overs at 20.80 runs per over.

Hall back in the attack.

Over 44: Nearly a maiden but Bradshaw drives the last ball of the over from Nel through the covers for a single, nice stroke that - almost played on one foot. His defence is good, his attacking strokes are decent, this bloke should bat up the order.
West Indies 244/8 (RR: 5.52): Powell 20* (15), Bradshaw 18* (42)
West Indies need 113 runs to win from 6 overs at 19.00 runs per over.

Over 43: Bradshaw gets in on the boundary act, tickling fine. Ntini ending badly today and spraying all over the wicket and being taken for a handful of singles in the deep. These two batters really blossoming now despite the imminent defeat.
West Indies 243/8 (RR: 5.65): Powell 20* (15), Bradshaw 17* (36)
West Indies need 114 runs to win from 7 overs at 16.14 runs per over.

Over 42: Bonus overthrows, sharp singles and some mis-timed heaves highlight an over of indifference from Nel. One gets the feeling that Nel is trying to hard and should really just concentrate on the basics and allow the tail-enders to get themselves out.
West Indies 236/8 (RR: 5.61): Powell 19* (13), Bradshaw 11* (32)
West Indies need 121 runs to win from 8 overs at 15.12 runs per over.

Over 41: Bradshaw and Powell face out a couple and then pick up a single each. Powell then decides enough is enough, backs away and slams one over long-on for six. The next one is short and he pulls it through mid-wicket for four. Entertaining stuff this. Ntini lost that little battle.
West Indies 231/8 (RR: 5.63): Powell 16* (11), Bradshaw 9* (28)
West Indies need 126 runs to win from 9 overs at 14.00 runs per over.

Over 40: Powell and Bradshaw labour on, determined to bat out the 50 overs, refusing to go down without a fight. Five runs off the over as the pacemen face up to some fiery stuff from Nel.
West Indies 219/8 (RR: 5.47): Powell 5* (6), Bradshaw 8* (27)
West Indies need 138 runs to win from 10 overs at 13.80 runs per over.

Nel back in the attack.

Over 39: One more run getting Powell off the mark finishes off Ntini's successful over. He's had an average day has Ntini. He will be well pleased to end the day with at least that wicket.
West Indies 214/8 (RR: 5.46): Powell 1* (3), Bradshaw 7* (25)
West Indies need 143 runs to win from 11 overs at 13.20 runs per over.

Daren Powell is the new man in.

WICKET
R Sarwan c Pollock b Ntini 92 (75)

Ouch! Sarwan misses out on a ton as he tries to take on Ntini. He gets his timing all wrong as he goes over the top but straight down the throat of Pollock waiting anticipantly at mid-off. Windies two wickets away from crashing out of the World Cup.

Over 38: Sarwan cuts two on the back foot and times nicely through square for a single. Bradshaw collects a couple more and this stand continues to frustrate SA. Sarwan into the nervous 90s.
West Indies 213/7 (RR: 5.60): Sarwan 92* (74), Bradshaw 7* (22)
West Indies need 144 runs to win from 12 overs at 12.00 runs per over.

Over 37: A rare maiden over as Bradshaw goes on the defence to speedster Ntini. Bradshaw as solid as a rock and the required rate just sky-rocketing by the minute. Sarwan still thinking about that ton, no doubt.
West Indies 208/7 (RR: 5.62): Sarwan 89* (72), Bradshaw 6* (19)
West Indies need 149 runs to win from 13 overs at 11.53 runs per over.

Over 36: Two more singles each as the left-hand/right-hand combination of Sarwan and Bradshaw contiunes to keep the Windies' spirits alive. SA's pacemen unable to wrap up the tail just yet.
West Indies 208/7 (RR: 5.77): Sarwan 89* (72), Bradshaw 6* (13)
West Indies need 149 runs to win from 14 overs at 10.64 runs per over.

Over 35: Ntini returns with a three-single over. A whole lot of a quieter over compared to the previous one tossed down by Smith. This is Sarwan's highest score in World Cup cricket now.
West Indies 204/7 (RR: 5.82): Sarwan 86* (69), Bradshaw 4* (9)
West Indies need 153 runs to win from 15 overs at 10.20 runs per over.

Ntini back into the attack.

Over 34: Smith tosses up a medley of pies and gets hit for three fours on the trot by Sarwan. FIrst Sarwan goes huge over the spinner's head and it's almost six. Ntini stops the ball going over the ropes and effectively spills a catch, but it's good fielding. The Smith is cut through the covers, drvies again through the covers and then flat-batting past extra cover making it 14 runs in four balls. He steals a single off the last delivery of the over to farm the strike nicely.
West Indies 201/7 (RR: 5.91): Sarwan 84* (67), Bradshaw 3* (5)
West Indies need 156 runs to win from 16 overs at 9.75 runs per over.

Over 33: Four singles picked off around the ground as Nel's return over proves fruitless for SA. Bradshaw looking quite comfortable out there for a tail-ender and Sarwan must be thinking if the tail stick with him, he can cash in with a ton today at least.
West Indies 186/7 (RR: 5.63): Sarwan 69* (61), Bradshaw 3* (5)
West Indies need 171 runs to win from 17 overs at 10.05 runs per over.

Nel back in the attack, looking to polish off the tail.

Over 32: Bradshaw drives the last ball of the over for one to get off the mark instantly. So ends another successful over for Smith and company.
West Indies 182/7 (RR: 5.68): Sarwan 67* (59), Bradshaw 1* (1)
West Indies need 175 runs to win from 18 overs at 9.72 runs per over.

Ian Bradshaw is the new batter.

WICKET
D Ramdin c sub (Peterson) b Smith 4 (9)

Sarwan paddles a rank long-hop square for two, then a single to Ramdin, then Sarwan goes huge back over Smith's head for his first six. He then rocks on the back foot driving through cover for just one. Ramdin looks to flick square but substitute fielder Robin Peterson dives forward and holds onto a good catch. Smith strikes in his first over. SA now into the Windies' tail-end.

Spinner Graeme Smith into the attack.

Over 31: Typically tight line from veteran Pollock as Sarwan and Ramdin getting one single each. Ramdin off the mark and Sarwan still going strong. Required rate now nearly 10.
West Indies 171/6 (RR: 5.51): Sarwan 60* (57), Ramdin 1* (6)
West Indies need 186 runs to win from 19 overs at 9.78 runs per over.

Over 30: The successful over for SA ends with Ramdin going on the pull, missing and getting pinned on the shoulder. Poor first stroke that from the 'keeper-batsman.
West Indies 169/6 (RR: 5.63): Sarwan 59* (56), Ramdin 0* (1)
West Indies need 188 runs to win from 20 overs at 9.40 runs per over.

Denesh Ramdin is the new batsman.

WICKET
K Pollard b Kallis 10 (17)

Pollard was really looking to go huge in the over, missing a couple of heaves and then eventually getting his stumps castled. Head in the sky and thinking about the six before even getting bat on the ball. A rush of blood to the head there from the rookie and now he's debut is over. Perhaps Sarwan should not have taken that quick single at the start of the over to give his batting partner the strike. Kallis now with two wickets for the day thus far.

Over 29: Four runs over long-on for Sarwan and then four leg-byes as an attempted tickle to fine-leg hits his pad and rolls to the fence. A single each for Sarwan and Pollard at the start of the over bringing the over's tally to 10.
West Indies 167/5 (RR: 5.75): Sarwan 58* (55), Pollard 9* (13)
West Indies need 190 runs to win from 21 overs at 9.04 runs per over.

Over 28: Kallis' line errs as he is picked off for three singles at will but then pulls it back nicely to end the over with three dots. He mixed the pace up quite a bit in that over, proving pretty handy.
West Indies 157/5 (RR: 5.60): Sarwan 53* (51), Pollard 8* (11)
West Indies need 200 runs to win from 22 overs at 9.09 runs per over.

Over 27: Three runs off the over including the one that gives Sarwan his deserved 50. Pollock appeals hopefully for one that pitched and kept straight on, but the lbw chance is turned down. Pollard looking a bit nervous for now. No need mate, just keep your cool.

West Indies 154/5 (RR: 5.70): Sarwan 51* (49), Pollard 7* (7)

West Indies need 203 runs to win from 23 overs at 8.82 runs per over.

R Sarwan 50: 46 balls, 6 x 4s Sarwan trotsthrough for another single to bring up the 25th half-century of his ODI career.

Over 26: Pollard guides one past 'keeper Boucher and the ball races to the long-stop rope for four. That was close - Boucher almost pulling off a brilliant catch. Three other singles around the ground, with Sarwan not getting to his milestone just yet.
West Indies 151/5 (RR: 5.80): Sarwan 49* (45), Pollard 6* (5)
West Indies need 206 runs to win from 24 overs at 8.58 runs per over.

Over 25: Pollard gets his first international run with a guide down to third-man. Sarwan defends the rest of the over, but manages another single off the final ball. So ends Pollock's successful return-to-the-attack over.
West Indies 144/5 (RR: 5.76): Sarwan 47* (43), Pollard 1* (1)
West Indies need 213 runs to win from 25 overs at 8.52 runs per over.

Debutant Kieron Pollard is the new batter.

WICKET
D Bravo c Gibbs b Pollock 6 (11)

Pollock strikes immediately in his return over. Bravo tries to whip one past mid-wicket but Gibbs jumps high and grips onto a good catch. Brilliant. Nothing special from Bravo today as he makes his way back to the pavilion.

Pollock back into the attack

Over 24: Better over for the Windies as Sarwan starts to close in on his half-ton pretty quickly. A single to Bravo off the first ball of the over then two on the cut and two bonus overthrows to Sarwan, who then hammers straight for four off the final ball of the over. Indifferent over that from Kallis.
West Indies 142/4 (RR: 5.91): Sarwan 46* (39), Bravo 6* (10)
West Indies need 215 runs to win from 26 overs at 8.26 runs per over.

Over 23: Boring stuff as the Windies go through the motions, steadying ship after the loss of their skipper. Four runs from it. Hall bowling run-of-the-mill medium-pacers of a good length, stopping the boundaries - good stuff.
West Indies 133/4 (RR: 5.78): Sarwan 38* (34), Bravo 5* (9)
West Indies need 224 runs to win from 27 overs at 8.29 runs per over.

Over 22: Three singles off the over. Everytime the Windies have a low-scoring over their required-rate edges up. It's over eight now and surely the end is nigh for the World Cup hosts.
West Indies 129/4 (RR: 5.86): Sarwan 36* (31), Bravo 3* (6)
West Indies need 228 runs to win from 28 overs at 8.14 runs per over.

Over 21: Hall is smacked straight back over his head for four by Sarwan - the nerve of it! Bravo nabs another single after Sarwan pushes to the long-on fence for just the one. Sarwan now, must take the lead as senior scorer in the absence of Lara.
West Indies 126/4 (RR: 6.00): Sarwan 34* (27), Bravo 2* (4)
West Indies need 231 runs to win from 29 overs at 7.96 runs per over.

Over 20: Bravo turns one square to get off the mark to end off SA's successful over. Lots of work to do now for the hosts after the loss of their skipper.
West Indies 120/4 (RR: 6.00): Sarwan 29* (23), Bravo 1* (2)
West Indies need 237 runs to win from 30 overs at 7.90 runs per over.

Dwayne Bravo is the new man out in the middle.

WICKET
B Lara b Kallis 21 (26)

Instant success for the star South African all-rounder as he removes the great Lara from the equatition. The Windies skipper and Sarwan take a single each and then Lara swishes at a slower one from Kallis and chops onto his stumps. SA are well pleased and the hosts fall into deeper trouble.

Jacques Kallis is into the attack.

Over 19: Sarwan lunges into one and whips it over square-leg for a beautiful four. Three singles and a sweetly timed twofinish off the over and this partnership is going at better than a run a ball. SA need a wicket before things start to slip away from them. The end of the powerplays should dry up the runs a tad.
West Indies 117/3 (RR: 6.15): Sarwan 28* (22), Lara 29* (23)
West Indies need 240 runs to win from 31 overs at 7.74 runs per over.

Over 18: Hall is worked all around the ground as the over sees five singles accrued. The two Windies maestors hauling out all the strokes and employing the drive, in particular, with great effect.
West Indies 109/3 (RR: 6.05): Sarwan 21* (18), Lara 19* (21)
West Indies need 248 runs to win from 32 overs at 7.75 runs per over.

Over 17: A single and a four each for Lara and Sarwan. Lara bashes one through the covers for another handy boundary while Sarwan helps another leg-side ball from Nel around the corneer and the fine-leg fielder can do nothing about it. Nel should take a break from the attack we reckon. SA need to end this stand before it really gets going. Lara in full swing is a very dangerous event.
West Indies 104/3 (RR: 6.11): Sarwan 18* (15), Lara 17* (18)
West Indies need 253 runs to win from 33 overs at 7.66 runs per over.

Over 16: Hall erring on the leg-side and gets picked off for three singles. Then - vintage Sarwan as he gets on the front foot and sends the ball racing through the covers for four. Not good stuff from Hall, we've seen better.
West Indies 94/3 (RR: 5.87): Sarwan 13* (12), Lara 12* (15)
West Indies need 263 runs to win from 34 overs at 7.73 runs per over.

Third and final powerplay taken.

Drinks break!

Over 15: A couple of singles and then a deft little touch from Sarwan races to the fine-leg fence for four. Nel ain't pleased and perhaps the fielder should have been on the ropes, rather than in the circle.
West Indies 87/3 (RR: 5.80): Sarwan 8* (9), Lara 10* (12)
West Indies need 270 runs to win from 35 overs at 7.71 runs per over.

Over 14: Three singles picked off around the ground and tow through mid-wicket thanks to some nice timing from Lara. Hall doing a good job here of keeping the run-rate quiet.
West Indies 81/3 (RR: 5.78): Sarwan 3* (7), Lara 9* (8)
West Indies need 276 runs to win from 36 overs at 7.66 runs per over.

Over 13: The Windies are running for almost anything now... and indeed they have to. They survive a couple of near misses gathering two singles for their efforts and a nicely timed two to leg off the bat of Lara at the end of the over.
West Indies 76/3 (RR: 5.84): Sarwan 1* (5), Lara 6* (4)
West Indies need 281 runs to win from 37 overs at 7.59 runs per over.

Over 12: Lara gets off the mark with two around the corner nad then a single taken just off the square as an inside-edge rolls off the square. Sarwan faces up to his first ball and goes on the defensive. If ever the Windies needed a huge ton from their skipper, it's today.
West Indies 72/3 (RR: 6.00): Sarwan 0* (1), Lara 3* (2)
West Indies need 285 runs to win from 38 overs at 7.50 runs per over.

Ramnaresh Sarwan is the new batsman out in the middle.

WICKET
C Gayle run out Prince 32 (34)

Gayle totally doesn't middle one through mid-on but it's four anyway - such is the power of the man. But then... huge blow for the Windies as a sharp single goes all wrong and a direct hit courtesy of Ashwell Prince ends Gayles' stint out in the middle. Three down already - tough times for the hosts. Remember, ifthey lose this game they're out of the World Cup.

Andrew Hall is into the attack.

Over 11: West Indies 65/2 (RR: 5.90): Gayle 28* (32), Lara 0* (0)
West Indies need 292 runs to win from 39 overs at 7.48 runs per over.

The legendary Brian Lara is the new batter.

WICKET
D Smith c de Villiers b Nel 33 (27)

Smith and Gayle pick up a single each Smith chips a full one through the leg-side for two and then he tries another big hit but this one goes to de Villiers waiting at point. He dives forward and pouches a good catch to get rid of the blossoming Smith. Pity that, a few more overs of him could have been quite entertaining.

SA will take the second powerplay.

Over 10: Ntini coming in for a bit of tap as the Windies pick up three boundaries in the over. Gayle bangs one through mid-wicket which Loots Bosman almost stops but his foot touches the rope and it's deemed a four. The big-hitter then punches a wide one through the onside which races to the ropes. He takes a single allowing Smith to get on top of another short one and pull oh so sweetly for four. Smith takes another single and a rather expensive over for the South Africans is done.
West Indies 61/1 (RR: 6.10): Gayle 27* (30), Smith 30* (23)
West Indies need 296 runs to win from 40 overs at 7.40 runs per over.

Over 9: Gayle gets going with two turned off the hips and then three, again off the hips. An indifferent first over from speedster Nel, fresh from his losing five-fer against Bangladesh. A run each for Gayle and Smith at the start of the over bringing the over's tally to seven.
West Indies 47/1 (RR: 5.22): Gayle 18* (26), Smith 25* (21)
West Indies need 310 runs to win from 41 overs at 7.56 runs per over.

Andre Nel into the attack.

Over 8: A trio of singles off the over - a quiter one as SMith and Gayle look to continue the charge but mis-time a couple, allowing Ntini's pace to get the better of them a bit.
West Indies 40/1 (RR: 5.00): Gayle 12* (21), Smith 24* (20)
West Indies need 317 runs to win from 42 overs at 7.54 runs per over.

Over 7: Well well well. Smith is all guns blazing now as he cuts solidly for four, pulls a short one for two, push, prods and guides a collection of singles and allows Gayle little of the strike. But that's fine, Gayle's prowess with the willow can kick in later.
West Indies 37/1 (RR: 5.28): Gayle 10* (17), Smith 23* (18)
West Indies need 320 runs to win from 43 overs at 7.44 runs per over.

Over 6: Smith creams one through point for another four. A single launched over the off-side and then two to Gayle on the cut. Another quick single and the Windies have eight runs off the over. That's more like it.
West Indies 28/1 (RR: 4.66): Gayle 8* (15), Smith 16* (14)
West Indies need 329 runs to win from 44 overs at 7.47 runs per over.

Over 5: A trio of singles picked off around the ground and then Smith times nicely through wide mid-wicket for two. Gayle not doing anything too hefty just yet, just taking the available singles for now.
West Indies 20/1 (RR: 4.00): Gayle 5* (12), Smith 11* (11)
West Indies need 337 runs to win from 45 overs at 7.48 runs per over.

Over 4: Smith, looking really confident here, drives for two and then gets two more in front of mid-wicket. Gayle, playing second fiddle for the moment, trots through for another single after a quick scamper to mid-off gives Smith one more single.
West Indies 16/1 (RR: 4.00): Gayle 2* (8), Smith 10* (9)
West Indies need 341 runs to win from 46 overs at 7.41 runs per over.

Over 3: Smith gets straight to the task at hand hammering an early boundary through the covers. A nice tickle to fine-leg yields a single and again Gayle plays out the rest of the over... just getting a feel for conditions before letting loose, no doubt.
West Indies 10/1 (RR: 3.33): Gayle 1* (7), Smith 5* (4)
West Indies need 347 runs to win from 47 overs at 7.38 runs per over.

Devon Smith is the new batter.

WICKET
S Chanderpaul c Smith b Pollock 4 (7)

Early breakthrough for SA as Chanderpaul drives the first ball of the over on the up. It goes straight down the throat of Graeme Smith waiting at mid-off. That'll hurt the Windies.

Over 2: Chanderpaul blocks out a handful of deliveries and then shows some early aggression as he pushes through gully for two. He then drives nicely for one leaving Gayle to face out the rest of the over. Ntini spraying it a bit all over the wicket early on.
West Indies 5/0 (RR: 2.50): Gayle 1* (6), Chanderpaul 4* (6)
West Indies need 352 runs to win from 48 overs at 7.33 runs per over.

Makhaya Ntini to share the new ball with Pollock.

Over 1: Quiet start for the West Indies as Gayle takes a single through the slip area and Chanderpaul sneaks one to mid-off. That ain't going to do They need to get at this huge total as soon as possible. Pollock settling into a nice line early on.
West Indies 2/0 (RR: 2.00): Gayle 1* (5), Chanderpaul 1* (1)
West Indies need 355 runs to win from 49 overs at 7.24 runs per over.

Shaun Pollock to take the new ball for SA.

All and sundry are back on the field.

And now for the chase.

South Africa: 356 for four (50 overs)
West Indies need 357 to win at 7.12 runs per over

South Africa produced a sublime batting display. Ab de Villiers led from the front and kept his nerve to score his maiden One-day and World Cup ton. Lara may rue not taking the third powerplay earlier. Kallis, Gibbs and Boucher all chipped in with stunning knocks. The Windies will need a lot of luck in the chase.

Over 50: Two twos and then Bravo bowls a terrible slower ball. Gibbs guides it for four. Bravo bowls the perfect last ball. Gibbs can only play it into the gap for a single.
South Africa 356/4 (RR: 7.12): Gibbs 61* (41), Pollock 0* (0)

Shaun Pollock is the new batsman.

Powell comes into the attack.

Over 48: Boucher and Gibbs consolidate the start of the over with ease. Boucher then smashes a huge six. The ball was in the block hole but Boucher is seeing it like a football and the ball flies over long-on. Two dot balls are then bowls.Boucher then sneaks a single to steal the stike.
