powell praises mentors

Daren Powell paid tribute to some of the biggest names in West Indies cricket after he played a key role in securing an eight-wicket victory over Ireland.

Powell took two for 24 in nine overs with the new ball as the West Indies limited Ireland to 183 for eight.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul then spearheaded the run chase with an unbeaten century.

Powell made his international debut in 2003 as the West Indies struggled to replace the great pair of Courtney Walsh and Curtley Ambrose.

He said: "I find myself in good form and I just try to keep things simple.

"The more I play things are getting easier and I am learning.

"I remember tours like Australia and Pakistan, facing Glenn McGrath and Waqar Younis.

"And Andy Roberts, Courtney Walsh, Ian Bishop and Michael Holding help me along.

"It is up to me to practice what they teach me and it is coming out now."

The West Indies face Australia on Tuesday in the Super Eight and Powell said: "I believe for the West Indies to come out on top the new ball is important and we have to pick up early wickets to limit their scoring."
